Chapter 16: Savior
Feng Tang found Cen Qi’s group incredibly boring.
The group had originally been fine, but since Feng Lulin introduced the game “Happy Landlord,” it had become far less serious. Now, it was practically useless.
In their free time, they all played Landlord or competed for Feng Tang’s modification coupons. Occasionally, someone would ask if he could turn their Volkswagen Passat into a Lamborghini, to which Feng Tang would reply, “Sure, if it doesn’t work, you can smash my shop.”
And no one ever dared to come for modifications.
Feng Tang’s love life and sex life had taken a qualitative leap, while Lanzhou’s side had quieted down.
Feng Tang and He Qing held an emergency meeting, unanimously concluding that the reason was that Lanzhou hadn’t found true love.
Lanzhou cursed, saying it was nonsense and that there was no need for a meeting.
Lanzhou had been quite the ladies’ man in his student days, but as he grew older, his taste worsened. He exclusively sought out women of the night, though he rarely had one-night stands.
Feng Tang had scolded him, but Lanzhou just said he wasn’t causing harm.
Feng Tang retorted, “Why do I feel like you’re indirectly insulting me?” Lanzhou shook his head but said, “It’s good that you understand.”
The three of them had been dining together frequently. Feng Tang, feeling lazy and not wanting to drive, was picked up by He Qing this time. Shortly after getting into the car, he noticed a friend request on WeChat.
Feng Tang glanced down to see a long string of French in the username, a profile picture of the person with their beloved car, and the location marked as overseas, though he didn’t check which country.
He Qing, sitting beside him, awkwardly rubbed his nose. Feng Tang caught on and asked, “Who is this? It must be your doing.”
He Qing explained that he had a car-buying client who had recently made some money and desperately wanted to connect with influential people.
Feng Tang expressed his envy. The thing he envied most in his life was newly rich people.
He looked up again and asked, “What does he do?”
He Qing said, “Mining.”
Feng Tang nodded and added the contact.
They had a habit of calling people from mining families “second-generation miners,” without any malice. However, the local dialect’s term for “mining” was an insult, implying someone was stupid.
Once the friend request was accepted, the person sent a handshake emoji and introduced himself. This guy was probably new to making friends and directly called Feng Tang “Young Master Liu.”
Feng Tang replied, “You didn’t mention which leader you’re talking about?” He Qing said, “No, let him guess.”
Feng Tang frowned, realizing they hadn’t even clarified the leader’s gender. He replied with a “Hello” and saved the contact as “Second-generation Miner.”
The “Second-generation Miner” frequently posted pictures of luxury cars from every angle on his Moments, with impressive variety. He always posted them during peak phone usage hours in the evening, like clockwork. Feng Tang liked his posts, finding them amusing.
This person’s Chinese name was probably too ugly, so everyone in the circle called him by his English name.
Feng Tang couldn’t remember the long string of his English name, only recalling “Brook.” Lanzhou joked that this person must have a girlfriend, hence “not a wanker.”
The full name of this “not a wanker” was a mystery. Feng Tang only remembered that he drove a Lamborghini around the streets, making a lot of noise, earning him the nickname “City Bomber.” Passersby marveled at the Lamborghini, while shopkeepers cursed him for disturbing the peace.
Later, “not a wanker” went to Pangu to have Ying Yujiang apply a film to his car—golden, preferably encrusted with diamonds. He wanted it to blind the whole street in the summer sun.
Ying Yujiang said he needed to ask the boss’s wife, so he called He Qing, who got so angry that he said, “Fine, give him a Swarovski film, the kind that dents the car. It’ll look good on and even better when peeled off!”
The next day, after He Qing returned from a business trip, there was a sign at the shop’s entrance: “No service for idiots.”
Feng Tang was delighted when he heard this and called Feng Lulin. Since then, that Lamborghini had never roared through the city center again.
When Feng Lulin learned about it, he praised Feng Tang, saying, “Please actively report such incidents in the future.”
After the city implemented a no-honking rule last year, alternative methods for honking proliferated. Recently, screaming chickens and horn calls were popular online. Every time Feng Lulin rode his motorcycle by the roadside, there were people blowing whistles nearby.
In a while, they might be able to hold a symphony concert on the streets. But that wasn’t the most troublesome issue.
Today, a large ad for a men’s hospital was wrapped around a traffic cone at an intersection. Feng Lulin led Bai Yangyue and his team to remove it and called the advertising company, informing them that it was a public facility violation and would be dealt with accordingly. The boss came and asked if it could be settled privately and left a phone number. Feng Lulin, not even bothering to lift his eyelids, said, “Call 122.”
At night, Feng Lulin led the fourth team to the city highway entrance.
A call had come in urgently, reporting an accident where a student had died.
Feng Lulin rushed to the scene, arriving just ten minutes after the incident.
The scene indicated that a small car carrying a family of three was driving normally on the highway. About 200 meters from the exit, the small car overtook a large truck.
In an instant, the exit appeared. The driver, a father, slowed down and changed lanes.
After merging into the right lane, another SUV driving in the wrong direction from the ramp entrance collided with the small car, sending it flying over 20 meters.
After several rolls, the small car broke through the guardrail and landed in a ditch. The son, who was in the front passenger seat, died on the spot. The passenger seat was covered in blood, and villagers nearby rushed to the scene to help.
Feng Lulin was on night patrol today and was not far from the incident. Qiao Ce was busy dispersing the onlookers when a witness shouted, “The driver ran away!”
Bai Yangyue quickly reacted, “Which direction did they run?”
The witness, trembling and a bit faint at the sight of blood, pointed shakily. Feng Lulin grabbed his police gear, picked up his police radio, and shouted to Qiao Ce, “Take care of things here!”
“Xiao Bai!” He didn’t have time to pick his team, so he grabbed a pair of anti-cut gloves, bit them in his mouth, and pointed a collapsible police baton at Bai Yangyue’s shoulder, “Come with me!”
At such a critical moment, apart from himself and his equipment, nothing else could be relied upon.
Leaving witnesses and activating the investigation and interception plan had to be left to Qiao Ce. The most urgent task was to chase the suspect immediately. Otherwise, if it turned into a hit-and-run, it could become a case of tracing thousands of miles and checking thousands of vehicles, increasing the difficulty significantly.
The rural paths along the highway barely had any streetlights.
Feng Lulin turned off his flashlight and jumped into the ditch with Bai Yangyue. Upon landing, Bai Yangyue almost twisted his ankle but kept running for over a hundred meters. After a few minutes, another group of road patrol officers arrived to support them, but they couldn’t catch a single shadow after a thorough search.
A police officer found a jacket, likely dropped by the suspect to lighten the load. It was still warm inside, indicating recent human body heat. He said, “He probably hasn’t run far.”
“Captain Lin,” Bai Yangyue said breathlessly into his pager, “Old Qiao said they set up a roadblock at the north ramp of the highway, and all toll stations along the route are ready to close and intercept…”
Another officer quickly added, “Yes, witnesses said the suspect was drunk, likely driving under the influence.”
“Fleeing on foot makes it harder to catch him,” Feng Lulin frowned, “Are all members of the third team here? Have they sealed off this field?”
“Yes, the suspect should be hiding in this cornfield…”
An experienced officer commented, “You guys haven’t chased this kind of suspect before. The surrounding area is all mountains; he can’t run far!”
“Alright,” Feng Lulin grabbed a tear gas spray and handed it to Bai Yangyue, “Follow me.”
Just as they reached the vicinity of the cornfield, the third team was conducting a thorough search.
Feng Lulin finally had a moment to catch his breath.
His trousers were torn by the stone slabs, leaving a deep cut. He leaned against a wet grass stack beside the farmland, gritting his teeth as he pulled out a police first-aid kit.
As he fumbled in the dark for a roll of medical tape, his phone, in the innermost pocket of his trousers, started vibrating.
The special ringtone for Feng Tang’s calls told Feng Lulin exactly who was calling. He took a deep breath and scanned the dark surroundings where everyone was still searching. He couldn’t answer the phone during the mission.
Seeing Feng Lulin’s situation, Bai Yangyue hurriedly took over the equipment he handed over and found that Feng Lulin had taken out a small surgical scissors.
Feng Lulin said, “My leg hurts where it’s cut.”
Bai Yangyue whispered, “Your skin is peeling off!”
“Cut it,” Feng Lulin gritted his teeth.
The phone’s vibration felt like some sort of encouragement. Feng Lulin closed his eyes, feeling a sharp pain in his ankle, and something fell off. Bai Yangyue, with blood on his hands, was nearly scared to tears by Feng Lulin.
Before they could catch their breath, the third team came over to report that the suspect had hijacked another car and was fleeing on National Highway G87. Feng Lulin quickly tightened the tourniquet on his calf, leaned on Bai Yangyue to stand up, and, with the third team leader absent, took charge. He directed some officers to stay and guard while the others went to pursue by road.
Once on the highway, many civilian vehicles had already arrived. The emergency lane was occupied, which had significantly delayed the rescue of the injured. The son was dead, but the parents were still alive, though severely injured.
The third team took over the pursuit, while Feng Lulin, with an injured leg, directed the fourth team to monitor the emergency vehicles and block those occupying the emergency lane, taking photos and recording penalties.
The fourth team was still checking emergency vehicles when Qiao Ce loudly shouted into his pager, “Captain Lin! Block the ramp exit ahead! There’s a white Volkswagen driving the wrong way, license plate xAxxxx!”
Feng Lulin quickly turned to direct traffic. Bai Yangyue and several team members had already jumped on their motorcycles to intercept.
Despite the pain in his leg, Feng Lulin managed to drive the police car and followed. He arrived slightly later at the scene, almost head-on with the suspect’s car driving at 50-60 mph, preparing to assist the third team in blocking.
The phone in his pocket continued to vibrate, probably the fourth call already.
Due to the number of vehicles involved in the blockade, the suspect’s car had to brake before hitting, reducing the impact. It swerved sharply, hitting two police cars from the third team. Feng Lulin jumped out of his car while Bai Yangyue had already fallen off his motorcycle.
“Stop!”
“Don’t follow! Block ahead! Trap him!”
Bai Yangyue jumped off the motorcycle, and as the suspect’s car continued to move slowly, several officers grabbed the car door, forcing it to stop.
Grabbing the car door is a common police tactic, often the only one in certain situations.
This method of almost testing the police’s limits is one of the few ways for police to confront steel with flesh.
In the end, Feng Lulin watched as the team dragged the suspect, reeking of alcohol, from the driver’s seat and personally handcuffed him.
The officers cleared the civilian vehicles, lined up ten police cars in succession, and escorted the suspect, who they had chased for three hours, back.
Feng Lulin collapsed into his seat, exhausted and speechless.
Recently, many vehicles from other provinces had flooded the city. Unlike railways and air routes, highways were less strictly monitored, and all kinds of people were entering the city. Modern cities already had a mix of all sorts, and traffic alone was enough to cause headaches.
The moat area connected several top commercial districts within the city, densely populated and in dire need of increased police force. Highway patrol was a tough job no one wanted, and now with a staff shortage, the fourth team had to step up again following a city order.
Feng Wangang… would likely be very busy.
Feng Lulin often saw SWAT teams frequently entering the city center but didn’t ask his father about it.
He was always on standby for deployment, ready to change roles at any time.
Some tasks had to be done by someone. Now as a traffic cop, he would do his job well.
Finally, he took out his phone and called Feng Tang back. The call was answered quickly, with Feng Tang laughing, “Off work yet?”
“Yes,” Feng Lulin took a breath, “It’s been a tough day.”
“Ah…” Feng Tang heard the exhaustion in his voice and felt a sudden pang in his heart. “I’ll come to see you.”
“No need, I’m on my way home. Today’s police car is giving me a lift.” As soon as he finished speaking, Qiao Ce glanced back but was intimidated by Feng Lulin’s sharp look and quickly looked away.
Feng Tang sensed his fatigue and didn’t want to hang up, so he said, “I’m having dinner with my mom in the city. The head of your public security system couldn’t come; he’s out of town investigating something.”
Hearing Feng Tang mention Feng Wangang, Feng Lulin’s heart skipped a beat but quickly calmed down.
“He is indeed busy.” Feng Lulin replied, coughing, “He even missed our safety training.”
Bai Yangyue, holding disinfectant to treat his wound, saw Feng Lulin flinch in pain, gritting his teeth but unable to suppress a groan. Feng Tang asked, “Are you that uncomfortable?”
“I’m fine.” Feng Lulin kept coughing, likely from the prolonged running.
Feng Tang seemed to move outside and suddenly said, “Looking Nice.”
Feng Lulin remained silent, prompting Feng Tang to quickly add, “I meant the car.”
Even though they weren’t officially together, Feng Tang feared Feng Lulin might overthink, “A Koenigsegg is parked at the entrance! But it has an out-of-province license plate.”
“Okay…” Feng Lulin pressed down on Bai Yangyue’s hand holding the cotton swab, mouthing, “No need.”
Adjusting to the pain, he said into the phone, “Not seeing you today feels like something’s missing.”
Feng Tang promptly retorted, “Missing brain cells.”
After a pause, Feng Tang added, “Actually, I want to see you too. If you’re really tired…I can come to you.”
If you like my work then please support me by buying me a ko-fi.
