Chapter 3: Who’s Provoking Whom
At four in the morning, Feng Lujin finished his shower.
He wrapped a towel around his waist, threw on a sweatshirt over his shoulders, and headed upstairs to sleep, still damp.
The sky outside was still dark, and the surroundings were excessively quiet.
Feng Lujin blew his hair dry and lay down on the bed, finally relaxing and taking a long breath. The wound on his brow had unfortunately gotten wet and was throbbing painfully.
His whole body felt like it was falling apart, but fortunately, he was used to this level of exhaustion. Every time he lay down in the early morning, it felt like it was only nine or ten o’clock, and he could sleep the whole day.
Feng Lujin turned over, pulled out his phone from under the pillow, and took out a note from the pocket of his uniform on the bedside table.
He held the note between his fingers, squinting to read it.
On it was the phone number Feng Tang left on New Year’s Eve.
Feng Lujin turned on his phone and sent a message: “Tomorrow night. Patrol by the moat.”
Message sent.
Feng Lujin stared at the screen for a long while, waiting for the light to dim before turning off the phone and stuffing it back under the pillow.
The moat was within his jurisdiction, so he had been there many times since he arrived in this city.
He rarely passed by there at night because it was usually filled with young people drinking and singing. The workload of checking for violations and issuing tickets was tedious, and his superiors preferred to send him to suburban checkpoints or night DUI checks.
As Feng Lujin closed his eyes, he thought of Feng Tang’s appearance and then remembered Feng Wangang’s warnings.
He turned over and pressed the bedding under him, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he took a deep breath of the cool air.
The area around the moat was the city’s most concentrated street for bars and entertainment venues, mostly frequented by young people. Although Feng Tang had calmed down a bit over the years, he still couldn’t resist coming out to play with friends.
Especially since he saw that text message as soon as he got up this morning.
The short seven words made his heart skip a beat, instinctively feeling that it was from Feng Lujin.
Thinking of this made Feng Tang angry.
On New Year’s Day, he obediently went to pay the fine at the district office, only to be told that he could pay on the spot. He was so angry that he wandered around the office for half a day without seeing a trace of him.
How could he lie?
However, the recent incident where Feng Lujin intercepted an overloaded truck with a motorcycle had spread throughout the city, and there was talk of a commendation. Feng Tang was so bored that he spent an entire morning watching the commotion in the WeChat groups.
All the groups were praising this new traffic cop for being handsome and manly. Although Feng Tang felt mixed emotions, he indeed had a bit more admiration.
He looked righteous and responsible, but underneath, he was probably still a wolf, the kind that bites without drawing blood.
Collecting his thoughts, Feng Tang was almost thrown against the windshield by He Qing’s sudden brake. He looked out at the street, already filled with people gathered under neon signs, laughing and joking.
The night wind blew, and the wide street stretched out. The leaves swayed in the colorful lights, creating a dreamy and psychedelic scene, illuminating the faces of various shades.
Feng Tang squinted as He Qing, holding the wheel with one hand, fiddled with the reverse system.
“Don’t park recklessly, this area is tightly controlled. If your car gets scratched, you won’t let me live tonight.”
Feng Tang was particularly vigilant recently after getting ticketed by Feng Lujin. He said this while taking He Qing’s car keys and holding them in his palm, looking around.
Since he got ticketed last time, whether playing anywhere in the district, he monitored himself and his friends. He was like a model citizen, law-abiding to the point where he could apply for a banner to hang over his head in another month.
“I say,” He Qing draped an arm over his shoulder, “just got ticketed once, and you’re afraid of traffic cops?”
Feng Tang sneered, “With your conduct, it took you four tries to pass the first driving test, didn’t it?”
He Qing glared, “Don’t bring that up!”
Feng Tang ignored him, locked the car door, and checked the parking line next to the car. If he misread it, He Qing would lose points, and nobody would get any sleep tonight.
His own car was also parked nearby, hidden in the shadows, not immediately noticeable.
They walked into the bar, arms draped over each other.
The electronic music pulsed, crashing into Feng Tang’s head, mixing with the heat and sweeping over, jolting and surging, constantly stimulating the revelers’ restless factors in the deep night.
“Damn,” He Qing looked up and saw a shirtless foreigner by the pole, closing his eyes and muttering, “You didn’t say there’d be a strip show.”
Feng Tang couldn’t resist teasing him, “It’s a legitimate strip dance, just look!”
“Look my ass,” He Qing grumbled, fearing his boyfriend’s reaction later.
Wasn’t this place a quiet bar before? How did it turn into a club?
Feng Tang was about to make He Qing watch a bit longer when Lan Zhou waved from a booth. Beside him, two young men, dressed like college students and quite good-looking, sat on a velvet sofa.
Leading He Qing, Feng Tang buried his head and squeezed through the crowd. When they finally reached the booth, he was surprised to see only the five of them, without a single girl.
“You didn’t bring any girls?” Feng Tang asked Lan Zhou in surprise.
“Just here to drink with you two. Hey, He Qing, did you drive? Get a designated driver later. Don’t dodge my drinks. It’s been a while since we got together, let’s not leave until we’re drunk,” Lan Zhou said while pouring drinks, signaling to the two young men.
The two didn’t hesitate, one leaning against Feng Tang and the other sitting on He Qing’s lap. He Qing jumped up, glaring at Lan Zhou, “What are you doing?!”
“Hey, I’m saying one for each of you, not on your lap! He Qing already has a partner.”
Feng Tang, feeling stiff from the closeness, spoke in a muffled voice, “You specially prepared people for me?”
“Seeing you alone for so long, always out and about. You’ve worked hard,” Lan Zhou said, toasting him.
Lan Zhou usually picked decent people, so these two seemed alright.
But after a few mojitos, Feng Tang, slightly tipsy, noticed their long eyelashes, straight noses, and bright smiles.
Looking at them, he lost interest. What was he really after?
Feng Tang slowly lowered his hands from their shoulders, feeling irritated. He put a cigarette in his mouth, and the young man named Xiao Guan quickly lit it, smiling and asking, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Feng Tang played with the lighter, watching the flame flicker, “My hand is sore.”
Xiao Guan smiled gently, “I’ll massage it for you.”
As soon as his hand was touched, Feng Tang felt uncomfortable and quickly declined, “No need.”
Now, Feng Tang was somewhat allergic to these routines and hints.
“What’s going on, bro?” Xiao Guan couldn’t smile anymore, “They say you weren’t like this before.”
Hearing this, Feng Tang felt a headache. He stood up, stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray, wiped his face, and said impatiently, “How was I? I’ve always been conservative.”
As he said this, he had no idea his eyelashes were longer than those young boys he remembered.
Feng Tang hadn’t come out to play in a while and wasn’t used to the situation.
He took a deep breath, sitting back on the sofa, silently cursing the overly soft couch. Scanning the lively environment, he caught the scent of desire in the air.
He saw the lonely people around and began to reflect on what he had been doing in recent years.
Every embrace seemed genuine, every hand-holding moment was filled with affection, drifting from one to another, carefree to the extreme. In the end, it was all fleeting, with nothing to show for it.
Seeing Feng Tang drinking and dazing, He Qing pinched his ear, reminding him seriously, “The city is small, don’t mess around!”
“You, always with so much to say,” Feng Tang let him pinch his ear, seeing his empty glass, turning to grab a bottle.
The taste of the mojito lingered sweetly on his lips, “There’s real affection in the world, just not for me.”
He said this with a self-deprecating tone, turning to Lan Zhou with a nearly empty glass, laughing loudly, “Feeding fish? Fill it up!”
He Qing, driving, drank no alcohol. After a few rounds, they propped up a drunken Lan Zhou, staggering out of the bar. Feng Tang, with a good tolerance, was nearly sober, and with He Qing’s help, effortlessly got Lan Zhou into He Qing’s car.
Feng Tang wiped his face, looking at Lan Zhou lying on the seat, then rolled down the window, “Watch him. I’ll get some sobering stuff from the bar’s convenience store.”
He Qing nodded, and Feng Tang headed across the street.
From the far corner, several patrol motorcycles approached, their red and blue lights particularly striking. Feng Tang paused, interested, turning to see a young cop leading, followed by a double motorcycle, and then…
He saw Feng Lujin at the rear, straddling the police motorcycle. Feng Lujin wore a face as if the whole world owed him millions. He parked the motorcycle on the side of the street and got off in one step.
Feng Lujin first directed his team members to clear the traffic at the intersection ahead, then pulled out a notebook from his chest pocket and started taking notes.
Fengtang had not yet entered the bar when He Qing, from afar, noticed Feng Lujin writing notes as he moved from car to car along the street. He slapped his forehead, exclaiming, “Oh no! Is this section of the street prohibited for parking? Why is there a traffic cop writing tickets?”
This shout woke Lan Zhou from his drunken stupor. He immediately opened the car door and shouted across the street, “Fengtang! Get in the car!”
“In what car! My car only seats two!” He Qing said.
Lan Zhou’s shout was so loud that it caught Feng Lujin’s sharp ears. He slowly raised his head to look in their direction. A sports car with two men, both unfamiliar to him, caught his eye. But the shorter man’s shouted name was one he recognized.
Seeing Feng Lujin holster his baton and approach the street corner to retrieve a police device, He Qing quickly started the engine and told Lan Zhou, “Damn it! Whether or not we leave him behind, I doubt Fengtang would mind being caught just once.”
As Feng Lujin turned around to retrieve the police device, He Qing pressed the gas pedal and made a quick getaway.
Fengtang had just crossed the street to his car when he saw He Qing driving away, leaving him momentarily stunned in place. He couldn’t help but grit his teeth and curse internally at He Qing’s wickedness. Yet he understood: if He Qing hadn’t driven off, both of them would be in trouble.
Not far away, Feng Lujin, holding the police device, approached with his baton securely fastened, and asked straightforwardly, “Those two—your friends?”
Fengtang coughed, leaned against his car door, and replied without missing a beat, “No.”
Feng Lujin internally chuckled but kept a stern face. He placed his hand on his baton, causing Fengtang’s heart to skip a beat, fearing he might face some violent enforcement.
During work hours, Feng Lujin had no time for nonsense. Following protocol, he saluted and firmly stated, “Please inform your friends that whether it’s a ten-thousand-yuan Wuling Hongguang or a multimillion-yuan McLaren P1, I’ll ticket them all. If I catch them improperly parked again, I’ll review the law enforcement recordings.”
Rarely had Fengtang been spoken to so directly, especially involving He Qing.
He retorted, “He and I are like brothers—he’d be the first to drag me into any trouble. If he left immediately, it means he corrected his mistake! If you have an issue with me, don’t take it out on him.”
“An issue with you? What, planning to race in the city and afraid I’ll stop you?”
Feng Lujin’s sharp gaze made Fengtang uneasy, but he held his ground, responding, “Who’s racing in the city? Don’t slander me.”
How does he even know about my past intentions to race? Fengtang felt nervous, realizing that after only a couple of encounters, both of them had already learned quite a bit about each other.
Feng Lujin smiled faintly and lowered his gaze, saying, “If He Qing ran, why didn’t you? You seem like someone who needs some discipline.”
Hearing his friend’s name called out directly, Fengtang retorted defiantly, “You always said to take responsibility for our mistakes, didn’t you?”
Feng Lujin swallowed his response, not wanting to provoke him further. He lowered his head and continued to jot something in his notebook.
Fengtang tried to peek, but Feng Lujin turned slightly to block his view and asked, “What brought you here tonight?”
His question nearly made Fengtang blurt out the real reason. Remembering the message, he felt uncomfortable and snapped, “None of your business.”
Feng Lujin raised an eyebrow, pretending to tear a page from his notebook and lightly tapped Fengtang on the forehead with his finger, making Fengtang wince in pain and curse, “What the hell are you doing?”
Without even looking at him, Feng Lujin replied, “Issuing a ticket.”
In his confusion, Fengtang thought Feng Lujin was serious about fining him. “Isn’t this a legal parking spot? That big line painted on the ground…”
“You were speeding,” Feng Lujin said.
He didn’t elaborate further, leaving Fengtang feeling that something was off about his words.
Even in his casual, lazy tone, there was a certain gravitas to Feng Lujin’s words that Fengtang couldn’t shake. Though he felt a moment of distraction, his rationality quickly brought him back. “What kind of speeding are you talking about? Explain.”
“Guess,” Feng Lujin replied.
He moved to fasten the police device to his belt and handed a ticket to Fengtang, saying, “This area is indeed a no-parking zone. Didn’t you see the signs? Will you be paying by card or cash?”
“Cash,” Fengtang replied, tilting his chin up.
The light from the street lamps cast a golden glow on his profile, highlighting the graceful curve from his chin to his nose.
After a brief pause, he continued with a smile, “But if Officer Feng wants to charge a bit more, I won’t mind.”
His last sentence was laced with clear provocation, the flirtatious challenge evident in his eyes, causing Feng Lujin to pause and look down at him, lips pressed into a tight line.
Fengtang relished the moment, enjoying the discomfort his words caused Feng Lujin. Did this guy really think he could outmaneuver him? Not likely.
“You’ve got some nerve for someone I’ve only met twice,” Feng Lujin said, his face darkening. “You really think I like men?”
“So,” Fengtang continued, “You better think carefully about whether you can handle me.”
Despite his innocent appearance, his eyes gleamed with a mix of arrogance and challenge, making him look like a predator in disguise.
Fengtang smiled, his dimples showing. He knew he looked good.
As he recalled, one of his subordinates had mentioned receiving information in his inbox. After checking his inbox, he found Feng Lujin’s resume. It revealed that Feng Lujin had been in the provincial military district before it disbanded, trained in the Northern Flying Division, but had to leave due to injuries. Now, he was a team leader in the city’s central patrol unit, three years older than Fengtang.
When Fengtang shared this with He Qing, He Qing had called him immediately, “Are you nuts?”
Fengtang, confused whether he was still drunk or He Qing was half-asleep, replied, “Know your enemy, know yourself, and you’ll never lose, understand?”
He Qing had grumbled, “I think you should stop bothering him… He’s out there doing his job. Have some decency. But I’ll admit, he’s more interesting than those weird ones you’ve dealt with before.”
Fengtang hung up, leaving He Qing to stare at his phone in bewilderment. Fengtang’s WeChat profile was still “Play,” yet his bio read, “No more games,” a clear contradiction.
He Qing had then remarked how old habits die hard, and not even a deity could save Fengtang.
“Fengtang.”
The sudden call brought Fengtang back to reality. He took a step back, his eyes blurred by the red and blue lights. He sensed Feng Lujin, taller by nearly five centimeters, lower his head.
In the cold night, Feng Lujin’s breath was surprisingly warm.
With a voice like a blade, each word sharply delivered, Feng Lujin emphasized, especially on the name “Feng.”
“Think carefully if you want to provoke me again.”
Hey guys it’s SheWee!!
