Chapter 5: Torment
“Old Qiao. What are you drafting so early in the morning?”
Feng Lu Lin glanced at the text message Qiao Ce was editing on his phone. He casually unbuttoned the top two buttons of his police uniform and sat down on a stool.
Having been out on duty early in the morning, he was drenched in sweat after making his rounds.
Qiao Ce laughed and tried to hide his phone, saying, “Oh, Captain Lin, I’m just handling some important matters. Director Feng cares about you a lot, and since you perform so well, I have to praise you a bit more…”
Feng Lu Lin shook his head helplessly and waved his hand. “Alright, I understand.”
Ever since he was transferred by Feng Wangang to this city’s patrol team, Feng Lu Lin knew who in the team was monitoring him for his father.
Qiao Ce, being a senior in the technology department, was excellent at handling surveillance and new gadgets. He often went out on patrol with them, ensuring Feng Lu Lin was watched from all angles.
However, only Qiao Ce knew his true background, which was at Feng Lu Lin ’s request. Having come down from the communications group, besides secretly helping other systems with their investigations, he genuinely wanted to work from the grassroots level…
He just didn’t expect to encounter someone like Feng Tang.
Feng Lu Lin ’s police pager, occasionally forgotten to be turned off, buzzed. Qiao Ce, having been in the city for a long time, also knew some things about the Feng family.
Today, Qiao Ce couldn’t help but remind him, “Captain Lin, that Feng Tang… recently came to the bureau to look up your file.”
“I know. But he still doesn’t know who I really am.”
Feng Lu Lin said, pulling out a tissue to wipe his sweat, not sure who he was talking to. “He’s quite interesting.”
Qiao Ce was puzzled, not understanding what these people were thinking. “So, Captain Lin… are you planning to keep him in the dark?”
Crumpling the tissue into a ball and tossing it into the trash can, Feng Lu Lin straightened the badge on his chest.
“Yeah, keep it hidden.”
This concealment left Feng Tang bewildered, busy all day without suspecting anything.
When driving in the city and occasionally encountering Feng Lu Lin on duty, he would quickly turn the steering wheel and take another road to avoid him.
What to blame? Blame Feng Lu Lin for being too tall!
From a distance, he stood out like a flag with big letters: Look at me.
The strange feeling in Feng Tang’s heart grew stronger… He resisted Feng Lu Lin ‘s approach but also longed to be seduced by him.
On the weekend, the district awarded the traffic police brigade, with the first award going to Feng Lu Lin ’s fourth patrol team.
The certificate was red with gold letters, signed by the district’s public security office and Liu Lizhu. Beside it hung an honorary velvet flag, and every team member was in high spirits.
Feng Tang grabbed a stool to watch, clapping along. He was about to fall asleep listening to the host’s speech, but seeing the scene he once longed for reignited his passion.
He deeply regretted not studying hard enough to get into a military or police academy back then. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have to be so cautious and seemingly “successful” on the surface but actually wary of saying half a sentence to others.
After the awards, it was almost mealtime, and the team organized everyone to eat together in the canteen. Feng Tang was starving and joined in. He took a card from someone, swiped it for a meal with three meat dishes and one vegetable, and sat down with his tray, feeling quite appetized.
Just as Feng Tang found an empty table and sat down, a shadow flashed in front of him.
Feng Lu Lin sat across from him with his tray, opened a bottle of cola, and placed it on the table.
He raised his chin and said, “Treat you to a drink.”
Feng Tang had been thirsty all morning but stubbornly didn’t accept it.
His eyes moved back and forth over Feng Lu Lin ’s annoying face, then he stabbed his chopsticks into the rice and said, “Officer Feng, if you’re new here and find the entertainment lacking… I can introduce you to some activities.”
Why keep seeking attention here for no reason?
Hearing this, Feng Lu Lin paused while breaking his plastic chopsticks. “To be fair, you were the one who made the first move on New Year’s Eve.”
Feng Lu Lin pressed his fingers on Feng Tang’s wrist and continued, “After causing trouble and running away, do you understand the rules?”
“What rules in a relationship?”
Feng Tang lowered his head, then looked up at him and whispered, “I am the rules.”
Feng Lu Lin smiled, his eyes filled with Feng Tang’s sharp chin.
He shook his head and picked a chicken leg from his untouched tray, adding it to Feng Tang’s, urging, “Eat quickly, you’re too skinny.”
This sudden change of topic left Feng Tang unable to keep up with his pace. Staring at the crispy fried chicken leg in his bowl, he licked his lips and snorted, “No need, I’ll eat at the next table.”
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t eat while looking at you.”
“Sit down.” Feng Lu Lin frowned, intimidating him. “This is the team canteen, don’t move around randomly.”
As he finished, he took the chicken leg he had just put into Feng Tang’s untouched bowl and added it to Bai Yangyue’s bowl on the next table. “Xiaobai, eat more! You’re still growing.”
Bai Yangyue, focused on eating, didn’t even look up and excitedly said, “Thank you, Captain Lin! Captain Lin is awesome!”
Feng Lu Lin turned back, his eyes full of challenge.
Feng Tang closed his eyes, damn it.
Why did he come here to find trouble for himself today? Finish the meal and leave quickly.
The two of them sat in silence, finishing their meal. Feng Lu Lin didn’t talk to him again, but Feng Tang kept thinking about the scene of Feng Lu Lin giving the chicken leg to Bai Yangyue, feeling inexplicably blocked.
He took a few bites, unable to eat anymore, packed up his spoon and chopsticks, and picked up his tray.
Standing over Feng Lu Lin , he said, “Hey… I’m leaving.”
Feng Lu Lin looked up at him, nodded, and said nothing.
In the afternoon, Feng Tang had no plans, so he went to the theater to pick up Liu Lizhu. Ever since his father’s car accident, he didn’t trust the assigned drivers much and preferred to pick up his elders himself when he had time.
The car had been parked at the theater entrance for a while. When the music stopped inside, older ladies started coming out in pairs, sometimes followed by uncles twirling jade stone balls and mumbling to themselves.
Liu Lizhu, in a high position, came to the theater occasionally on weekends to relax. Seeing her son and the driver with two cars parked at the entrance, she smiled at Feng Tang. “It’s rare for you to come.”
Liu Lizhu had a very good temperament, a kind face still retaining the charm of a middle-aged woman, with especially large eyes. Feng Tang inherited them from her.
“Mom, what play did you listen to today?”
Feng Tang raised his chin, signaling the driver to follow his car, and opened the car door for his mother.
Liu Lizhu pressed down her skirt and got in the car. Once Feng Tang was in the driver’s seat, she said, “I listened to ‘Meeting in the Mulberry Garden,’ about a Lu State official and his wife… Forget it, you young people haven’t heard of it. There’s a line, ‘When I left, the willows weren’t big, but when I returned, the trees were fully grown’… Ah, time passes so quickly. After this year, you’ll be twenty-five.”
Feng Tang said nothing, not daring to respond. When Liu Lizhu stopped talking, he replied, “Mom, you still look young. I’ll come to listen next time and perform for you at home!”
Liu Lizhu laughed and scolded him, “You’re the most glib.”
After a while, she seemed to remember something and asked, “Son, why haven’t I seen He Qing recently?”
Feng Tang, without blushing, smiled and joked, “He’s very busy, always nowhere to be seen. Mom, do you remember the car wash we opened together? Business is good this year. I’ll take you to inspect it sometime!”
Busy he was, but He Qing was actually being kept at home by his boyfriend, almost hidden away. He probably needed a signed note to come out and play now.
That heartless guy went back and tattled after being tricked into watching a strip show last time.
Feng Tang had been sneezing for days, probably cursed by Ying Yujiang’s thoughts a hundred times. He couldn’t understand that excessive possessiveness after all these years, how it still hadn’t settled down?
But he wouldn’t tell Liu Lizhu about this…
After coming out in high school, his family had been worried about his orientation but remained open-minded, taking no measures, just letting him grow naturally. Whether he turned out to be a leaning poplar or a straight tree, they left it to fate.
“By the way, the city’s traffic control plan has been submitted to the province recently,” Liu Lizhu suddenly said, “You and He Qing Lan Zhou, those guys, be careful, don’t wander around aimlessly.”
“There are new inspection points at all major intersections, and police aresetting up more traffic checks. There are a lot of eyes on you, so be mindful of your behavior. I don’t want to hear about you getting into any trouble.”
Feng Tang nodded obediently. “Got it, Mom. I’ll be careful.”
Liu Lizhu looked at her son with a mixture of pride and worry. “It’s not just about being careful, Tang. It’s about making smart choices. You’re at an age where everything you do can have long-term consequences.”
“Yes, Mom, I understand,” Feng Tang replied earnestly.
They drove in silence for a while. Feng Tang’s mind wandered back to Feng Lu Lin and the strange feelings he evoked. Despite his mother’s warnings and the complications involved, he couldn’t deny his fascination.
As they approached their home, Liu Lizhu sighed. “I know you’re an adult now, and you have your own life, but remember that your father and I are always here for you.”
Feng Tang reached over and squeezed his mother’s hand gently. “I know, Mom. Thanks.”
He parked the car, and they got out. As they walked towards the house, Feng Tang’s thoughts were already drifting to his next encounter with Feng Lu Lin . He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something significant between them, something worth exploring despite the risks.
Inside, Liu Lizhu watched her son with a knowing look. “Just be careful, Tang,” she said softly, more to herself than to him.
Feng Tang nodded again, but his mind was elsewhere. He couldn’t wait to see Feng Lu Lin again and figure out what it was about him that made everything else fade into the background.
Feng Tang quickly answered, focusing on driving. He nodded and reassured Liu Lizhu, “Mom, don’t worry.”
With Liu Lizhu in the car, Feng Tang drove much more slowly, sticking to the edge of the road. Occasionally, he stubbornly insisted that Liu Lizhu sit in the back seat in the middle, having heard that it was the safest spot in case of an accident.
After parking the car at home, he washed up and went to bed. Lying in bed, he felt restless, so he pulled out his phone to check his social media.
As soon as he refreshed it, a post from Feng Lu Lin popped up: “Only you can see this.”
Feng Tang’s face turned pale. He didn’t think anyone else in his WeChat contacts had added Feng Lu Lin , so he wasn’t sure if this post was truly visible to only him.
He felt like a cat scratching inside his heart, making him restless. He stared blankly at the screen, unable to sleep no matter how much he tried.
His mind was filled with the image of Feng Lu Lin ‘s tightly bound waist, broad back, high black boots, and the dangerous eyes hidden under his hat.
Feng Tang’s ears burned.
Compelled by an unknown force, he clicked into Feng Lu Lin ‘s photo album and found a picture of him playing cards after work.
In the photo, a slender hand held a card with black diamond Caesar. The sleeve was rolled up, revealing a deep scar near the thumb. The photo was a bit blurry.
On the table were the hands of two other men, one holding a lighter and the other a cigarette, but neither looked as good as Feng Lu Lin ‘s hand.
Feng Tang took a deep breath and quickly commented: “Playing cards for money during Spring Festival is a criminal offense, you better be careful or I’ll report you.”
As soon as he sent the message, the WeChat chat window began to vibrate. It was undoubtedly from Feng Lu Lin .
Feng Tang opened it, and a series of messages from Feng Lu Lin appeared.
Bubble Hall: Report? You won’t get away with it either on New Year’s Eve at that club.
Bubble Hall: Report me? Do you want to elope with me?
Feng Tang quickly replied, “In your dreams,” glaring at the screen as if trying to pierce through it.
But then he read Feng Lu Lin ‘s messages a few more times, wondering how he knew about that club.
Regretting his impulsive comment, he searched online and sent a link: “If you have delusions, get treatment early! Early discovery, early treatment, early recovery!”
After sending it, he felt satisfied, seeing Feng Lu Lin ‘s “Typing…” message, but he didn’t wait for a response and turned off his phone, placing it under his pillow before covering himself with the blanket to sleep.
Every time he saw Feng Lu Lin ‘s silly WeChat name, he got angry!
This bastard had somehow found his old QQ number, which he’d used in high school.
Finding it was one thing, but then Feng Lu Lin screenshot his nickname “QQ Hall” and filled the screen with laughing emojis. Feng Tang immediately blocked him.
Half an hour later, feeling restless, he unblocked him, and upon refreshing, saw that Feng Lu Lin had changed his WeChat name to “Bubble Hall.”
Fuck it!
God knows, Feng Tang almost choked when he saw it.
But after his prank, he felt as if fireworks were going off inside him, unable to suppress a silly grin.
Trying to mess with me? Keep dreaming. The person who can control Feng Tang is still on their way…
Feng Tang curled up, feeling warm under the blanket. Despite being cozy, the cold wind outside still made him feel chilly.
Half-asleep, Feng Tang thought it would be nice if someone could hold him right now.
He stayed home all weekend, eating the light soup delivered by He Qing. He Qing had hired a new Chinese chef who made the soup to help Feng Tang reduce his internal heat, thinking he needed to cool down before spring arrived.
He Qing’s concern annoyed Feng Tang, but he drank the soup anyway.
Only when he saw that He Qing had also sent some four-red blood-enriching porridge for Liu Lizhu did he stop complaining.
He Qing, on the other end, was staring at several voice messages from Feng Tang, each about thirty seconds long, too scared to open them.
After finishing his late-night snack, Feng Tang saw that it was already past midnight.
Feeling full, Feng Tang leaned against the balcony, holding a piece of agarwood ready to light up, when his phone rang in his pajama pocket.
Biting the filter, he answered the call, and Lan Zhou’s voice came through.
“Damn! Cen Qi and the others got busted!”
“Tonight?” Feng Tang frowned. “In the city? Those guys were racing?”
Lan Zhou confirmed with a few grunts, “Yeah, on the third ring road. They caused such a ruckus that several local brigades had to work overtime. Even though the patrol team is making a name for themselves lately, I didn’t think anyone would actually dare to bust Cen Qi and his gang.”
Feng Tang sneered, “There’s a track they could use, but they chose to race in the city for thrills? Especially in Feng Lu Lin ‘s patrol area? They’re asking for it.”
He unconsciously started changing clothes, still talking on the phone, “No way, I gotta go check out the fun…”
Enjoying the commotion, he couldn’t miss the chance to see Cen Qi and his gang finally getting caught.
“Sure, be careful. I’m still out of town,” Lan Zhou laughed, “Oh, and remember to change your SIM card tomorrow. Give me a call when you do.”
Feng Tang agreed, hung up, and put his phone away. He had to change his SIM card every month, and tomorrow was the start of a new month, so he had to visit the service center again.
After getting ready, he wrapped a striped cashmere scarf around half his face, looked in the mirror, feeling satisfied, grabbed his keys, and headed out.
Feng Lu Lin ‘s Fourth Outer Patrol Team was part of the city traffic police, mainly responsible for roadside inspections.
They usually worked from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., with shifts extending to 11 p.m. or overnight. They frequently patrolled at night, handling accidents, and were also tasked with traffic security when higher-ups visited.
Lately, problematic vehicles in the city had been lying low, too scared to come out.
But Cen Qi’s group, foolish as they were, dared to secretly gather and race around the city’s ring road, pushing their speeds from the 100 kph limit to 150-160 kph, which would result in severe penalties even on the highway.
When Feng Tang arrived at the scene, the traffic police were busy, and he hadn’t informed anyone to receive him.
Standing leisurely not far from the ring road, half his face hidden in a scarf, Feng Tang scanned the area with his large eyes. He spotted Cen Qi and a few familiar faces, squatting on the ground with their heads in their hands.
Police cars were parked in a row, warning cones set up, and three supercars with scissor doors wide open were parked not far from the ring road.
Feng Tang squinted and recognized them as part of He Qing’s new batch.
He had driven his private car today, He Qing’s white Bentley, with an ordinary license plate, so plain that it lacked any meaningful implication.
Feng Lu Lin stood in front of Cen Qi, looking stern, half his face hidden in the red and blue police lights, holding a police walkie-talkie.
Feng Tang couldn’t hear what Feng Lu Lin was saying.
In this tense environment, Feng Tang was genuinely impressed. Who was Cen Qi? Apart from He Qing, Cen Qi was one of the top young masters in the city, extremely wealthy, having moved from another city a few years ago and recently started causing trouble.
Cen Qi had boasted at a banquet that as long as he was around, there was no need to fear the patrol team. After all, no one had ever bothered them in their area.
Why chase after them? If they caused an accident and died, it was their full responsibility. If they died while racing, that was their own business. Few car enthusiasts were trouble-free. Why bother with them when there was enough hard work and exhaustion already?
Feng Tang watched as Cen Qi was humiliated, and the person who did it wasn’t bad either.
Feng Lu Lin stood by, holding a police baton, guarding the young masters, and constantly gesturing for them to stay quiet. With witnesses and evidence, they could speak at the station.
Feng Tang knew well the recent prominence of the Fourth Outer Patrol Team. It seemed likely that someone high up wanted to address the chaos and had deployed a new batch of external police forces to the city to crack down on traffic issues.
Once Cen Qi and the others were taken away, Feng Lu Lin noticed Bai Yangyue and the others approaching, mentioning a white Bentley sports car parked nearby. Looking over, he saw Feng Tang standing there, talking with someone from the management team.
Feng Lu Lin walked over and saluted the management team member.
“Captain Lin,” the person greeted.
Feng Lu Lin nodded, “Thank you. You can continue.”
Feng Tang, now alone with Feng Lu Lin , felt uneasy. As he turned to leave, Feng Lu Lin grabbed his shoulder.
Feng Lu Lin ‘s voice was cold, “Why did you switch to a white car?”
Feng Tang choked, “To match my socks. I’m wearing white socks today.”
“Oh, you’re that particular?”
Feng Lu Lin could hardly contain his laughter, turning his face away as Feng Tang was blocked. He couldn’t go anywhere.
Feng Tang tried to dodge to the right, but Feng Lu Lin , like a mountain, moved with him, nearly causing a collision.
Feng Tang looked up, about to curse, when he heard Feng Lu Lin say, “Oh, by the way, that night…”
Drawing out his words deliberately, Feng Lu Lin smirked, “You didn’t reply in the first half of the night, so I couldn’t sleep well in the second half.”
“Feng Lu Lin !”
Feng Tang’s face heated up. He glared at him, “Your skin is so thick!”
“Did you think about the consequences of teasing me?”
Before Feng Tang could respond, Feng Lu Lin pinched his face, “Your skin isn’t thin either. We’re alike.”
Lan Zhou’s message had come quickly, and Feng Tang rushed over. Since his car was parked nearby and was a multimillion-dollar sports car, it naturally caught the attention of citizen journalists taking pictures.
The patrol team managing the scene couldn’t stop the crowd, and more people gathered, taking photos of the supercars parked by the roadside.
Feng Tang glanced at his car and said to Feng Lu Lin , “I’ll take my car to your station too, to avoid misunderstandings.”
Feng Lu Lin , surprised by his cooperation, watched as Feng Tang handed the car keys to Bai Yangyue, saying, “Drive it over. I’ll go through the procedure and take a police car.”
With lights flashing, they returned to the station. The impounded supercars were towed away, making the transport drivers nervous.
Feng Lu Lin , looking at the expensive cars, frowned and instructed, “Don’t be scared! Move them all.”
Following Feng Lu Lin to the patrol team for the first time, Feng Tang admired the navy blue police car decals, praising, “Your cars look cool with those decals.”
He Qing’s dealership had all kinds of flashy, reflective stuff, not practical at all.
Seeing through his thoughts, Feng Lu Lin sneered, “Tell He Qing to stop selling those reflective ones. They’re blinding and unsafe.”
Feng Tang ignored him, still admiring the cars. Feng Lu Lin added, “If you like it, tear it off and stick it on. More police cars will chase you.”
Feng Tang retorted, “You talk too much.”
It was nearly 1 a.m., and the station was still busy. Feng Lu Lin declined to rest and took Feng Tang to retrieve his car.
Walking shoulder to shoulder, Feng Tang felt too close and slowed down, but Feng Lu Lin slowed down too. Feng Tang sped up, and so did Feng Lu Lin .
This bastard kept bumping his stopped, “Can’t you walk properly?”
Feng Lu Lin , straightforward, leaned down slightly and smiled, “I want to be close to you.”
——–
Hey guys it’s SheWee!
Feng Lulin: I want to be close to my wife. (^^)
Feng Tang: Don’t you know how to fucking walk?!
