Chapter 6: Fortunes Turn
After Feng Lu Lin finished speaking, Feng Tang rolled his eyes dramatically.
“I swear, I need to sew that mouth shut someday… No, I need to sew it shut with a needle and thread!”
Seeing the white Bentley being unloaded from a distance, Feng Tang finally felt a sense of relief. If that car got even a scratch, He Qing would probably use his bed as a trampoline in the middle of the night, jumping three feet high and coming over to kill him.
He was shivering at the thought, unaware that Feng Lu Lin was observing him under the light hanging from the roof eaves, eyes fixed on him.
Watching Feng Tang’s every move, seeing the millions of flowers blooming in his eyes and brows.
Even though Feng Tang was slow to react, he still felt the intense gaze.
Instinctively, he looked down at himself, wondering if there was something to look at when he was fully dressed.
Just as he was about to evade, a strong beam from a police flashlight shone brightly from afar. Feng Lu Lin instinctively raised his arm and pulled Feng Tang into his embrace, covering his head.
Feng Tang grunted, tightly wrapped by Feng Lu Lin.
“What are you looking at? Hurry up! Finish up and go rest, everyone worked hard today.”
Feng Tang, muffled and almost out of breath, listened to Feng Lu Lin’s serious commands and found it somewhat amusing.
Push… he can’t push him away!
Feng Tang gave up and stayed still, turning his face to see Feng Lu Lin rolling up his sleeves. On his exposed arm, there was a fresh scab, like a burn.
Feng Tang felt a sudden sting, as if he’d been pricked.
Feng Tang asked, “What happened to your hand?”
Feng Lu Lin replied, “Candle wax, last night…”
Feng Tang’s brow twitched, and he immediately understood, sighing, “Wow, I didn’t think you had it in you.”
Last night there was a power outage at the unit, damn it.
Feng Lu Lin swallowed the rest of his sentence, smirking, letting Feng Tang misunderstand as he pleased.
He wanted to see just how twisted Feng Tang’s mind could get, but Feng Tang’s expression was clearly amused.
Just as he was about to say something, an on-duty officer came over with a notebook, looking troubled, “Captain Lin, the street racing is classified as an accident! Our unit has the authority to impound the car, so… so this Bentley has to stay for twelve hours before it can be released.”
Seeing Feng Tang’s silent approval, Feng Lu Lin waved his hand, “Fine, keep it.”
He turned to Feng Tang, asking, “Can you come pick it up tomorrow?”
Feng Tang nodded, coughing, and Feng Lu Lin instinctively looked at the water dispenser, grabbing a paper cup to get him some water.
Rarely wanting to take care of someone, he asked, “Do you want it warm or hot?”
Feng Tang smiled with narrowed eyes, “I want it at seventy-five degrees.”
He could tell the man at the water dispenser was stumped, almost laughing out loud internally. After a while, Feng Lu Lin handed him the cup, and Feng Tang, feeling it, realized it was indeed around sixty to seventy degrees, just right.
Well done.
Feng Tang completed all the paperwork for the car impoundment and sent a text to He Qing, saying the car was impounded and begging for mercy come morning.
It was already early morning, and He Qing, likely just finished with some activity Feng Tang found distasteful, lazily called, “You… Ah, why… did you get caught again?”
Hearing He Qing’s tone, Feng Tang quickly covered the phone, while Feng Lu Lin watched amusedly, “What are you covering?”
“I feel like my phone is about to drip with orgasm.” Feng Tang said calmly.
Before he could say another word, He Qing screamed on the other end, “Feng Tang! Did you get laid? Why is there a man’s voice?!”
He then dramatically changed his tone to one of grief, “Did you get… Boohoo!”
Before more could be said, Feng Tang, reacting quickly, hung up and covered his face, cursing, “What kind of childhood friends do I have…”
Feng Lu Lin, having heard everything, was trying hard not to laugh. He took the empty paper cup from Feng Tang and crushed it, tossing it into the trash, “Does He Qing have a boyfriend?”
“Playing dumb? Your superiors must have given you some information already, right?” Feng Tang was displeased, “If you want to investigate, go after Cen Qi and his gang. He Qing and I, and Lan Zhou, are well-behaved, model citizens.”
Feng Lu Lin smiled, neither confirming nor denying it.
After thinking for a moment, he asked, “No information about personal relationships. So, do you have a boyfriend?”
“Yes,” Feng Tang said, “Not only one, but two! One for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and another for Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Satisfied?”
After saying this, he got up and walked towards the courtyard of the unit, feeling dizzy.
Feng Lu Lin quickly caught up, his shadow cast large by the streetlights, like a dark force pressing on Feng Tang.
Feng Lu Lin continued to ask, “What about Sundays?”
“Rest, idiot.” Feng Tang was infuriated.
“Fine, I won’t banter with you anymore,” he looked at Feng Lu Lin and asked a question that had been bothering him for a long time, “Why is your name Feng Lu?”
Feng Lu Lin rarely answered obediently, “Because my father’s surname is Feng, and my mother’s surname is Lu.”
Feng Tang mumbled, “Coincidentally, my father’s surname is Feng too…”
Feng Lu Lin pinched the soft skin on the back of his neck, “Can that be the same?”
Maybe the night wind had made him foolish.
Talking about parents seemed to soften Feng Tang’s demeanor. He walked with his hands in his pockets, speaking as if a floodgate had opened, “My mother’s surname is Liu, but Liu Feng doesn’t sound good… So they gave me a grand name, Feng Tang, powerful, right?”
Feng Lu Lin raised an eyebrow, his tone neither joyful nor cold, “Aren’t you quite charming now?”
He said this, seeing Feng Tang silent, and asked, “Your mother is Director Liu, right?”
Feng Tang nodded, slowing his pace, unconsciously waiting for Feng Lu Lin, “You really know a lot about me.”
“Who doesn’t know you in the city?”
Feng Lu Lin took out a cigarette, putting it in his mouth. He looked at Feng Tang’s slightly tired face and put the lighter back in his pocket.
Feng Tang’s eyes curved with a smile, “Am I really that famous? Actually, I’m just like you all, grew up in a normal environment, not that arrogant. Parents in official positions… it means more rules and restrictions.”
“Yeah, I…”
Feng Lu Lin opened his mouth instinctively, almost biting his tongue, and said lightly, “Let’s not talk about me.”
Feng Tang didn’t respond, but he had a lot to say. He knew that although Feng Lu Lin came from an ordinary family, he might feel envious.
He didn’t want to inherit the family business or stay too long in the city’s social circles.
Growing up in it, he’d seen everything and became indifferent. The ups and downs of the political world meant life and death to him, and power didn’t need to be held tightly.
For instance, he and He Qing and Lan Zhou, though childhood friends and close as brothers, one was in politics, the other two in business, and they couldn’t understand each other on some issues. Many things that seemed normal to He Qing were disasters to Feng Tang’s family.
Sometimes he even envied the nouveau riche…
Buying a car with full payment, carrying money in sacks, living freely.
Enjoying today, worry about bankruptcy tomorrow!
But he had no place to voice these thoughts. Feng Lu Lin might not understand either.
Feng Lu Lin, walking with him, realized they were on his usual route to the remote parking lot where he parked his off-road vehicle.
He turned around, lightly embracing Feng Tang’s shoulder, guiding him in another direction, his voice hoarse, “We took the wrong way.”
At three in the morning, they circled to the back courtyard of the unit where the motorcycles were parked. Feng Lu Lin picked a regular one he used, started it, and signaled Feng Tang to get on.
Rows of motorcycles stood alongside cones to be placed on the streets.
Under the streetlights, Feng Tang looked at Feng Lu Lin and felt a bit dazed.
The first time they met…
This guy was also on a motorcycle, with an annoying face, his words enough to drive anyone crazy.
Thinking of tonight’s street racing incident and the recent large truck accident, Feng Tang suddenly felt this guy wasn’t that bad.
Feng Lu Lin, at accident scenes, wore a reflective vest, wide-brimmed hat, black boots, sometimes tucking his shirt into his pants when it was cold, with a conspicuous “Traffic Police” on his back, a baton at his waist, looking imposing and powerful.
He seemed ready to tackle any danger.
But in a major accident…
They were as fragile as the cones laid out on the ground.
Feng Tang thought this man lived up to his conscience and his police uniform.
His expression softened as he took the helmet from Feng Lu Lin, reaching up to touch his buzz cut, “You’re not wearing a helmet?”
“You wear it, I have a tough life. Ever heard of rolling under a truck’s front wheel? I just got a scratch.”
Feng Lu Lin, still annoying, added in a low voice, “I drive fast. Hold on tight.”
Feng Tang’s face heated up, though he refused to acknowledge it. Instead, he leaned in naturally, wrapping his arms around Feng Lu Lin’s waist, tightening his grip mischievously, feeling the cold wind whipping past his ears and shivering all over.
With the throttle opened wide, Feng Lu Lin rode the small motorcycle with the power and grace of a warrior on horseback!
Feng Tang couldn’t take it anymore, gripping his waist and shouting, “Fucking slow down, you idiot!”
Feng Lu Lin didn’t listen at all.
Feng Tang mischievously pressed Feng Lu Lin’s abs through his clothes and shouted, “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
The man in front hit a bump, making Feng Tang feel like he was about to fall off. Then, a sudden sharp turn almost threw him off again!
Feng Lu Lin drove into a smoother area and turned back to smirk, “A true knight is aloof and cold.”
The wind pressure and centrifugal force left Feng Tang breathless. The vibrations and noise turned his whole soul into a puddle…
He tightened his arms around Feng Lu Lin, trying to absorb more of his warmth.
The relationship between a man and his motorcycle was like that between a swordsman and his sword—requiring full body control, a union of soul and flesh.
The motorcycle hit the main road of the city. With fewer people and cars on the streets at this early hour, Feng Tang lay against Feng Lu Lin’s back, now not feeling awkward at all.
The wind chilled him to the bone. He pressed his face against Feng Lu Lin’s back and said, “If you’re so great, why didn’t you become a detective?”
“Detective?”
Feng Lu Lin clearly hesitated, his laughter blending with the wind and becoming indistinct, “With all my injuries, how could I be a detective?”
He admired those who worked on the front lines of criminal investigations, but his current job was just as important. With more and more cars on the road, traffic accidents were increasing. Feng Lu Lin knew there was still a huge need for personnel in his field.
Different police roles, but the same responsibilities: safety and protection.
He recalled how during the Spring Festival, their holidays were canceled, and the entire team had to return to work. Though everyone was worried, no one complained. Why? Because there had been too many accidents, and they all had to get back to work.
At their posts, they exchanged helpless glances.
The highway police were even busier, so why should those working in the city complain?
Feng Lu Lin’s motorcycle sped down the road, just within the speed limit, making Feng Tang feel like he was about to take flight.
Wearing his helmet affected his vision, so he wrapped one arm around Feng Lu Lin’s waist and used his other hand to pull off his helmet.
As they went over a speed bump, Feng Tang let out a yell and then burst into laughter.
“This is awesome!”
Feng Lu Lin slowed down noticeably and began to scold him, “Are you itching for trouble? Put your helmet back on! Don’t you care about your life?”
Feng Tang was unimpressed. He had never seen such a strict traffic cop… Ignoring him, he held the helmet in one hand and rested it on his thigh. His other hand continued to hold Feng Lu Lin’s waist, feeling comfortable.
Finally, there was nothing blocking his view.
He closed his eyes and pressed his face against the man’s back.
Feng Lu Lin’s throat tightened, and his lower abdomen felt warm.
He could clearly feel Feng Tang’s soft cheek pressing against him. It was hot, like water, melting into him.
It stirred all his sensory fantasies in the cold night.
“You were in military school!”
Feng Tang closed his eyes and shouted loudly, “Did you ever get beaten up?”
“Beaten up?”
Feng Lu Lin shouted back, “During the new training at school, the second-year students would beat up the first-years, from the front door to the back door!”
“What happened then?!”
Feng Lu Lin laughed loudly, the speed increasing again, and almost screamed, “We fought back!”
Later, when Feng Lu Lin became skilled, if he encountered a dangerous situation at work, he would take action without hesitation.
When Feng Wan came to the scene to find his son, Feng Lu Lin was covered in blood. He said he would rather make a statement about how he beat someone up than lie in a hospital bed while colleagues explained to his father, “Why was your son beaten up?”
He understood the saying, “What goes around comes around,” and never felt superior. He never thought his father’s authority was anything remarkable. He admired and respected his father. Due to leaving home at a young age, they lacked the usual father-son closeness.
This era was too transparent, with risks everywhere… Feng Lu Lin could only strive to earn everything he deserved with his own hands.
So, he somewhat understood Feng Tang’s hesitant words earlier.
Riding fast through the streets, he hoped they could indulge a little in this brief time.
Flying through the wind, Feng Lu Lin took Feng Tang along the road by the city moat, where the lights were brighter than ever.
The motorcycle had a silencer; it wasn’t a modified bike, so the exhaust wasn’t loud.
Feng Tang remembered riding a “little ghost fire” motorcycle during middle school.
“When I was fifteen or sixteen, I rode a motorcycle too! I always loved the roar of big engines. It felt cool and flashy!”
Feng Lu Lin slowed down, listening seriously as Feng Tang continued, “Back then… I had no other skills besides showing off.”
Finally finding some common ground with Feng Lu Lin, Feng Tang couldn’t help but keep talking.
“My parents were leaders, so they rarely controlled me… During my rebellious teenage years, I wanted to stir things up,” Feng Tang said quietly, “I wanted to be wild, to get attention… to go to jail.”
He had been riding too recklessly, once being intercepted by an elder driving a car, and another time crashing into a tree while carrying He Qing. It was then that he realized how foolish he had been. Youthful arrogance was just an excuse for his stupidity.
After leaving the hospital, he and He Qing ate vegetarian food at the school gate for half a month. He didn’t understand at first when He Qing, showing the blood marks on his arm, said with misty eyes and a pouting mouth, “I respect life.”
Feng Tang was deeply impressed.
Listening to Feng Tang’s wild teenage stories, Feng Lu Lin didn’t find them childish but rather relatable: “When you revved the engine, didn’t the whole street buzz?”
Feng Tang almost choked: “I was always wondering why no traffic cops came to catch me…”
Feng Lu Lin leaned back to feel the wind, his eyes slightly dry, and said in a hoarse voice, “They were late.”
Feng Tang made a fist and punched Feng Lu Lin’s abdomen lightly.
He rolled his eyes behind Feng Lu Lin’s back. What does it have to do with you?
Recalling Feng Lu Lin’s earlier statements and his impressive deeds in the city, Feng Tang suddenly said, “I think your team is like NBA-level captains and CBA-level teammates… Your combat power is just like that.”
Feng Lu Lin laughed in the night wind and said, “Do you think highly of me?”
“Love is blind, ever heard of that?”
Feng Tang leaned closer, blowing into his ear and tightening his grip around his waist, continuing, “But love… requires feelings, understand?”
