Ableism (regarding physical disabilities)
At weishi11pm to 2:59pm., Wu Ruo and Wu Qianqing took a few bodyguards with them and rode a carriage to the city gates. Wu Bofang, Yao Shuwan and Wu Yu had brought along five clan elders with them and had already been standing wait by the city gates for a long time.
When they saw Wu Ruo and Wu Qianqing, their expressions were a little unnatural.
Wu Qianqing had always been filial, so when he saw his elders, he naturally went forth to greet them. However, he was not as close with them as he had been before. After greeting them, he stood to another side with Wu Ruo to wait.
Wu Bofang and Yao Shuwan kept looking in their direction and glancing at them. They seemed as though they wanted to speak up to explain the situation at the State Tutor’s banquet, but at the end of the day, they were unable to put down their pride2拉不下脸皮 (la bu xia lian pi): literally ‘unable to pull down the skin of [one]’s face’. and left the matter unsettled.
After about one ke of time3Another one of those old measures of time that no one can really agree on the duration of. Currently, the consensus seems to be that this measures about 15 minutes, but the actual definition of 一刻 (yi ke) varies from dynasty to dynasty., over a hundred carriages, vast and mighty, headed towards the main entrance gates of Huangdu City.
When Yao Shuwan saw that one of the drivers was a bodyguard of the Wu family, she called out joyfully: “They’re here, they’re here!”
Wu Bofang and Wu Yu were especially excited, walking forth quickly to welcome them.
The lead bodyguard directly ignored Wu Bofang and his lot, driving the carriage over to Wu Ruo: “This subordinate greets furen.”
Wu Ruo asked, concerned: “Was everything alright on the road?”
“On the way here there were a few ‘petty thieves’4This formatting comes from the original text. but we’ve dealt with all of them,” when the bodyguard mentioned the ‘petty thieves’, their tone carried a hint of scorn.
Wu Ruo naturally knew who he was referring to when he mentioned ‘petty thieves’: “As long as everyone is alright.”
When the fleet of carriages came to a stop, Wu Bofang and his lot hurried lifted up the curtains5For reference, these carriages don’t have doors to them, but rather are partitioned from the outside with just a hanging curtain over the entrance. to one of the carriages, the people lying inside were his oldest son and his oldest daughter-in-law, he shouted agitatedly: “Xuanyun6Reminder: These will be the people from Wu Ruo’s grandparents’ generation, so Wu Xuanran’s siblings and their families. They would’ve been from the other main estates within the Gaoling City Wu family, like the northern, eastern and western main estates.!”
When Wu Xuanyun, lying inside the carriage, listless and sickly, heard someone calling him directly by name, he gradually opened his eyes. When he saw that it was his father and mother, tears of happiness rapidly poured from his eyes: “Dad, Mum!”
It was as though he had found his backing, he excitedly lifted the blankets off of his body and climbed out of the carriage.
When the others heard Wu Bofang’s voice, they stuck their heads out of the carriage windows one after the other. In the moment that they saw Wu Bofang, their eyes lit up.
“Grandfather!”
“Grandmother!”
“Great-grandfather!”
“Great-grandmother!”
“Clan Elder…!”
When Wu Bofang saw that everyone was still alive, his eyes reddened: “It’s good that everyone’s alright, as long as you’re alright.”
Wu Ruo walked over and said: “Great-grandfather, if you have anything to say, it’ll be better to leave it till everyone has been settled in. After all, this is the entrance of the city gates, we have a whole queue of carriages and we’re blocking everyone’s way. It’s very easy to incur the displeasure of the public.”
Wu Qiantong, who was sitting in a carriage toward the back, saw that Wu Ruo and Wu Qianqing were in perfect condition, completely unscathed, standing there. In an instant, his rage overflowed: “Wu Ruo! What does it matter to you where we stand to have a conversation?”
“What does it matter to me?” Wu Ruo smiled coldly as he looked at Wu Qiantong: “If it weren’t for my people saving you, do you think all of you would still be able to live till now? If it weren’t for my people sending you here, would all of you be able to safely reach Huangdu City? Hah, xiaoshu, next time, please think before you speak7说话带上脑子 (shuo hua dai shang nao zi): literally ‘to wear [one]’s brain before speaking’. Hilarious turn of phrase..”
“Bullshit!” Wu Qiantong wouldn’t believe Wu Ruo’s words: “What capabilities would you have to save us?”
Wu Ruo raised an eyebrow: “If it wasn’t me, then who would’ve saved all of you? And who would’ve sent all of you all the way here?”
“Of course it was Grandfather!”
Wu Bofang’s expression revealed awkwardness.
Wu Ruo sneered, ridiculing: “Oh. Then you should ask Great-grandfather clearly whether he sent people to rescue you.”
Clan Elder Rong who had come together with Wu Bofang stood forth and said: “Southern Estate’s Fifth Master8He’s addressing Wu Qiantong., please stop joking around. If it wasn’t for Young Master Ruo sending people to rescue all of you, all of you would’ve died a long time ago. Along this way, it was also Young Master Ruo who sent people to guard all of you all the way to Huangdu City. On top of that, if it wasn’t for Young Master Ruo, none of you would’ve been able to find a place to settle down9落脚处 (luo jiao chu): literally ‘a place to put [one]’s feet’, something like a place to rest one’s feet upon. It refers to a ‘temporary lodging’. In the text, the author writes it as 落角处 (luo jiao chu), which according to Pleco, the luo jiao in this phrase refers to an ‘angle of fall’ in military context, and chu refers to a place. I have assumed it as a typo, but if anyone would like to chime in, feel free to let me know in the comments. so quickly.”
Wu Qiantong suppressed his anger until his face turned red: “Can’t we settle in at Grandfather’s residence?”
Clan Elder Rong frowned: “Fifth Master, in Huangdu City, every cun of land costs a cun of gold10A.K.A hella expensive.. Even if you have money, you may not be able to purchase a residence, much less a huge residence. Although the Clan Leader has arrived here for quite some time, he was only able to procure a residence at an exorbitant price just two days ago, however, it’s not even half the size of the southern main estate. Right now, it can only barely fit us and the other clan elders. There’s simply no way to squeeze anyone else in.”
“T-then can’t Grandfather build a residence that’s as big as the Gaoling City one outside of the city?”
Wu Bofang’s expression immediately darkened: “Do you think the land in Huangdu City is that easy to buy? Or do you think that it’s very easy to build a residence? If you say you want to build it, then it can be built immediately? Wu Qiantong, this isn’t Gaoling City. In the future, be more cautious when you speak. In Huangdu City, just any random person can crush you to death underneath their feet.”
Wu Qiantong: “…”
Wu Ruo glanced at Wu Qiantong: “If xiaoshu doesn’t want to go along with us, you can get off the carriage and find someone else to send you back to Gaoling City. In any case, I’ve already done everything humanly possible to help.”
Wu Qiantong was infuriated: “You…!”
Wu Yu, who had remained quiet the entire time, interrupted Wu Qiantong’s words: “Xiaoshu, Xiao-Ruo has already gotten an imperial edict from the Emperor. After you enter the city, you can stay at the Huangdu City Wu estate. On top of that, the Lord State Tutor guaranteed in front of the Emperor that he definitely wouldn’t stop until he had cured all of you.”
“Really?” Everyone’s expressions were filled with excitement.
Ever since they had gotten injured, they had used up pretty much all of their medicinal ingredients, however, there were no improvements to their injuries. They’d originally thought that this was it for them in this lifetime but they never would’ve thought that the Lord State Tutor would be willing to cure their injuries.
Wu Ruo said indifferently: “It’s absolutely true. The Emperor has even given me an imperial edict.”
Wu Yu: “…”
He had really managed to get the imperial edict?
Everyone cheered.
Wu Ruo looked at their happy faces, his eyes filled with mockery.
“Hey, are you moving or not? If you’re not moving, then scram to a side! Don’t block the road!” Someone yelled angrily from behind the fleet of carriages.
“Let’s go.” Wu Ruo turned around and boarded their carriage with Wu Qianqing.
Wu Qianqing sighed: “They really think too simply.”
They thought that just because they could enter the Huangdu City Wu estate, they would have good days ahead.
Wu Ruo smiled without speaking.
Once the fleet of carriages arrived at the southern side of the main Wu estate, the Hei family bodyguards explained their reason for coming to the Wu family bodyguards guarding the entrance. However, the Wu family bodyguards guarding the entrance acted as if they were dealing with beggars, chasing them to leave: “Leave, leave, leave, our Clan Leader11So the author clarifies in this chapter, in a couple of paragraphs, that the clan leader is another person who isn’t Wu Chenzi. However, you can assume that Wu Chenzi still has the highest authority in the Huangdu City Wu family and the clan leader most likely defers to Wu Chenzi in decision making. Past chapters will be edited to reflect this, but if I miss anything, feel free to point it out. never told us about any Wu family side branches moving into our Wu estate.”
Wu Ruo had already predicted that Wu Chenzi and his lot would definitely cause trouble for him before he received the imperial edict, so he took the imperial edict out and walked to the bodyguard: “So you’re saying that you want to defy this edict?”
The expression of the Wu family bodyguard immediately changed and he quickly knelt to the ground. When the steward12管家大人 (guan jia da ren): the term ‘guan jia‘ here refers to the steward of the house, much like Hei Xin in Hei Manor. However, this particular steward has had the ‘da ren‘ suffix added to his title. Literally meaning ‘big person’, it was a polite way to refer to anyone with any sort of prestigious position. For example, Wu Chenzi’s State Tutor title has this suffix, which I’ve translated as a ‘Lord’ prefix in English. Normally, a steward of a household wouldn’t be referred to with this sort of title, since we obviously haven’t seen Hei Xin being referred to in this manner. I’m not sure what exactly the author meant to imply here, since it’s not like this character has a name or much significance to the story, so I’m just leaving this note here to point it out. I will not be adding the ‘lord’ prefix in English to the translation, because it’s just weird. inside the estate found out about the situation outside, he immediately informed the clan leader.
When the clan leader found out that Wu Ruo had the imperial edict, he hastily rushed out and said, smiling: “Bofang, my apologies, I’m really sorry. I’ve had a lot of things to handle lately, so I forgot to instruct the servants about the matter of all of you moving in.”
Wu Bofang was also a clan leader himself, how could he not understand this person’s intentions? “As a clan leader, it’s true indeed that we have to deal with many matters.”
The clan leader instructed the steward: “Go and arrange rooms for them quickly.”
“Yes, sir.”
Wu Bofang looked towards the carriages: “All of you, come down here.”
Wu Qiantong and the others happily alighted from the carriages.
In an instant, Wu Bofang and Clan Elder Rong’s expressions changed. Just now, everyone had been sitting aboard the carriages, so they were unaware of the conditions of their bodies. It was only now that they realized that the people of the Gaoling City Wu family were all either missing a hand or leg, or had had their eyes gouged out or their ears cut off. In any case, there weren’t many people with whole bodies.
Yao Shuwan looked disbelievingly at their incomplete bodies: “You… all of you…”
Although she had heard about their injuries being quite serious, but she had never imagined that their injuries would be this serious.
Everyone, one after another, had pained expressions. They no longer wanted to recall what had happened that day. It was truly too frightening. For the rest of their living days, they never wanted to run into that sort of situation ever again.
Wu Ruo comforted them with ‘good intentions’: “Don’t worry, everyone, the Emperor has declared an edict for Lord State Tutor to cure all of you within a short period of time. If you’re lacking any medicinal ingredients, remember to bring it up to the main branch’s clan leader. The main branch’s clan leader will definitely satisfy all of your requests.”
When the clan leader heard this, his expression hardened in an instant. How much medicinal ingredients would they need to be able to cure all of them?
Wu Ruo said to Wu Bofang: “Great-grandfather, everyone has been escorted to the Wu estate. I’ve already fulfilled my responsibility, so I won’t linger here any longer. I still have things to attend to, so I’ll be leaving first.”
Wu Bofang nodded.
“Wait!” An angry voice came from inside the manor. Following after, an upperclass woman in flashy robes, supported by a servant girl, crossed the main gate and walked to Wu Ruo, shouting: “Guards! Arrest him!”
Without waiting for the bodyguards of the upperclass woman to act, Wu Qianqing and the hundreds of Hei Manor bodyguards who had escorted the Gaoling City Wu family rapidly squeezed their way between the upperclass woman and Wu Ruo. They had even pushed the upperclass woman back by more than two zhang; it angered the upperclass woman so much that she was shaking all over.
“All of you… all of you…!”
The clan leader’s expression darkened: “Zhirong, what are you doing?”
Wu Bofang and the others looked at Shang Zhirong, then looked at Wu Ruo. In the end, they chose to remain silent.
Shang Zhirong said angrily: “Clan Leader, my daughter Yuxue was injured by them! Until today, she still hasn’t woken up. I want to get justice for my daughter right now!”
So it was Wu Yuxue’s mother. Wu Ruo snorted coldly: “Madam Wu, it was your daughter who trespassed into Hei Manor first, that’s why our people mistook her for an assassin and injured her. In any case, at the time, she wasn’t the only one who was injured. I also fainted for two days. Then, for this debt, who should I settle it with?”
“Aren’t you standing here hale and whole now? But my daughter is still lying in bed, unconscious, right now!”
“So you mean that I have to be gravely injured and unable to get up, for you to be satisfied?” Wu Ruo ridiculed: “So this is how you treat the wife of your benefactor?”
“Whose benefactor are you?”
“My husband and his ancestors were the ones who rescued Lord State Tutor’s father. You won’t decide not to admit to this matter, will you? Do you mean that your Wu family wants to become people who repay kindness with enmity?” Wu Ruo deliberately raised his voice, so that everyone passing by would be able to hear.
The clan leader saw that the passersby were all gathering around to point fingers, so his expression immediately darkened and he chided: “Shang Zhirong, Lord State Tutor will definitely settle Yuxue’s matter appropriately. Go back now, immediately.”
Shang Zhirong held herself back, then glared at Wu Ruo, enraged. Dissatisfied, she flung the sleeves of her robe and returned into Wu Manor.
Wu Ruo turned to Wu Qianqing and said: “Dad, you can go ahead first. I want to buy some things in town.”
Wu Qianqing couldn’t relax: “I’ll go with you.”
Wu Ruo nodded.
Once they boarded the carriage, Wu Qianqing told Wu Ruo: “In this current situation, it can be counted as you having formed a grudge with the Lord State Tutor and his lot. In the future, when you go out, you must bring more people with you. I worry that they will do you harm.”
“I will.” Even if Wu Ruo didn’t do that, Hei Xuanyi also wouldn’t be at ease letting him go out alone.
Wu Qianqing asked: “Where do you want to go right now?”
“A medicine shop.”
