Wu Ruo not only had medicinal ingredients, he also had magical equipment, so he didn’t have to go out. However, starting from ten days before the competition, he needed to personally register at the competition grounds provided by the royal family.
Wu Ruo waited until the last day of sign-ups before he went with Wu Qianqing and the others, as well as Wu Xi’s shifu Wu Chenliu, to the royal family’s competition grounds to evaluate their cultivation levels.
At this timing, there already weren’t many people coming to register, there were only slightly over a hundred people queueing up to be evaluated. The participants could only be sorted into the category they would register to compete in after their evaluation results were released. So it was simply impossible to lie about your cultivation level to win the competition1A.K.A signing up for the fourth level competitions when you’re a sixth level practitioner..
After roughly about half a shichen, it was Wu Chenliu’s cultivation level evaluation.
The cultivation level evaluation was extremely simple. Participants only needed to channel their spiritual energy into a spiritual light mirror equipment, then the spiritual light mirror would display the participant’s cultivation level.
After Wu Chenliu channeled in his spiritual energy, the spiritual light mirror immediately displayed a ‘nine’.
Everyone was shocked.
“Another ninth level magic practitioner again? Who is he? How come I’ve never met this person before? I don’t think there’s such a person in the ten major families?”
“He’s Senior Wu Chenliu. He was an Wu family member, and is from the same generation as the Lord State Tutor but he was expelled from the Wu family for some reason. It’s not strange if you don’t know him. He usually doesn’t appear in public places.”
“No wonder I’ve never seen him before. But isn’t the Wu family too silly? They actually kicked a ninth level practitioner out of the Wu family.”
“Although he’s supposedly been kicked out of the Wu family, but look, doesn’t he still have to come and participate in the competition, and help the Wu family obtain a ranking?”
“That’s true.”
It was as if Wu Chenliu didn’t hear the discussions from the sidelines; he walked up to the registration table to the side.
The disciple in charge of registration entered Wu Chenliu into the name list of the ninth level practitioners.
After Wu Chenliu finished his registration, he turned around and saw a person in the queue behind him rushing Wu Ruo: “Hey, you there in the front, do you want to register and participate or not? If you want to compete, then hurry and get evaluated! There are still plenty of people waiting behind you!”
Wu Chenliu looked towards Wu Ruo’s hand that was placed on the spiritual light mirror, but there was no spiritual energy being channeled through.
The disciple in charge of the evaluations showed a hint of annoyance. If it weren’t because Wu Ruo had come together with Wu Chenliu, they would’ve chased this person out of the registration hall a long time ago: “You just have to channel spiritual energy into the spiritual light mirror, then the spiritual light mirror will display your cultivation level.”
Wu Qianqing said, with an apologetic expression, to the disciple in charge of the evaluations: “I’m really sorry. My son doesn’t have any spiritual energy, so he can’t channel spiritual energy into the mirror. Would it be possible to let him participate in the first level practitioners competitions?”
Once these words were said, someone immediately jeered: “Who are you trying to fool? Who of the ten major families doesn’t have spiritual energy? I think you just want to sneak into the lower level practitioners’ competition so that you can win!”
Following closely after, someone else said: “A tall and robust person like him, won’t he be embarrassed to participate in the first level practitioners’ competitions? Do you know who participates in those competitions? They’re all three to four year old little kids! Registering in the first level practitioners’ competitions, he’ll be embarrassed to death!”
The others thought of Wu Ruo standing amongst three to four year old children on the competition grounds and couldn’t help laughing out loud.
Wu Qianqing and Wu Xi’s faces were red with anger. If it weren’t because the competition had rules2They’re referring to the rule about mandatory participation, as well as the rule preventing members of the ten major families’ from leaving the city one month before the competition date., who would be willing to let their own relative come and be ridiculed by others?
Wu Ruo looked at the spiritual light mirror thoughtfully, and didn’t bother about the ridicule of others.
Wu Chenliu was about to speak up for Wu Ruo, when he heard the disciple in charge of the evaluations say: “If he really doesn’t have any spiritual energy, then get your family’s clan leader to come and prove it.”
“I’m his clan leader.” A voice travelled over to them.
Wu Chenliu, Wu Qianqing and Wu Xi quickly turned around.
The Wu family’s clan leader3To clarify: this is not referring to Wu Bofang. This is referring to the clan leader of the Huangdu City Wu family. This is the person who is the clan leader in name but still has to defer to Wu Chenzi. walked to Wu Ruo’s side and said to the disciple in charge of spiritual energy evaluations: “He’s a disciple from our Wu family’s side branch. Since he was born, he’s never had spiritual energy. Just let him participate in the first level practitioners’ competitions.”
When the disciple in charge of spiritual energy evaluations and the disciple in charge of registration saw that it was the Wu family’s clan leader, they immediately bowed at the waist and nodded in understanding, putting Wu Ruo on the name list of the first level practitioners.
A hint of condescension, in addition to ridicule, could be seen in the gazes of the people around them. However, they didn’t dare to say anything out loud in front of the Wu family’s clan leader.
Wu Ruo’s expression minutely seemed to change, then he expressed his gratitude to the Wu family’s clan leader.
Just now, he had hesitated about whether to reveal the situation about his own spiritual energy. He never expected that the Wu family’s clan leader would help him to resolve this difficult struggle.
Wu Qianqing and Wu Xi also thanked the Wu family’s clan leader.
The Wu family’s clan leader said to Wu Chenliu: “Come with me.”
He led Wu Chenliu to a corner.
Wu Chenliu looked at the Wu family’s clan leader, the corners of his mouth twitching: “Dage.”
The Wu family’s clan leader snorted coldly: “You still remember that I’m your dage? I thought that you’d already forgotten that you were a member of the Wu family.”
Wu Chenliu: “…”
When the Wu family’s clan leader saw that Wu Chenliu didn’t speak up, he was even more irritated: “It’s already been so long since it happened. Isn’t it about time you return to the Wu family?”
“Since I was already expelled from the Wu family at that time, on what grounds are you letting me back now4Usually, if a member of the family is officially expelled from the clan, there has to be very strong reasons for doing so. After all, we’ve already gone over how strength in numbers is a huge thing in this setting. With someone as strong of a resource for the family as Wu Chenliu, they would’ve had to have legitimate reasons for kicking him out. Otherwise, other members of the Wu family would’ve objected against the decision. As for bringing him back into the family now, after having had such legitimate reasons for kicking him out, they would have to again come up with a reasonable enough defence or else they’d be slapping themselves in the face. After all, a lot of the people who were present when he was being expelled would probably still be alive and thriving in the Wu family.?” It seemed that Wu Chenliu had no desire to return to the Wu family to slave over the Wu family’s matters again. Right now, he only wanted to properly protect the residence that he had lived in with his wife for close to a hundred years.
“You…!” The Wu family’s clan leader snorted coldly: “Forget it. Do whatever you want. I just hope that you’ll show up when the family needs your help.”
Wu Chenliu didn’t nod in agreement, nor did he say that he wouldn’t go back.
The Wu family’s clan leader hated seeing him like that the most, so he waved his hand dismissively: “Get out of my sight. Don’t hang around here being an eyesore.”
Wu Chenliu turned around and was about to leave, but he suddenly turned back and pointed Wu Xi out, and said: “Dage, that’s my personal disciple. Her name is Wu Xi. She’s a junior from the side branch.”
He said this because he wanted the Wu family’s clan leader to look out for Wu Xi and the others.
The Wu family’s clan leader immediately frowned, opening his mouth as if he wanted to say something. In the end, he sighed: “I got it. Just leave.”
“Hn.” Wu Chenliu went back to Wu Xi and the others.
Wu Xi happily hugged Wu Chenliu’s arm and said in a lovable5撒娇 (sa jiao): the return of one of my biggest enemies in translating, sa jiao! I’ve translated it as ‘lovable’ here because Wu Xi is trying to appeal to Wu Chenliu in a cute way. manner: “Shifu, I just evaluated my spiritual energy and I’ve already risen to the fourth level! Do you have any rewards for me?”
Wu Qianqing, who was behind her, knocked her head: “How disrespectful! Don’t be rude to your shifu.”
Actually, he was internally very happy that his daughter’s cultivation could rise to the fourth level so quickly. Of course, this was all thanks to Wu Chenliu’s effective teaching.
Wu Chenliu thought about it seriously: “I’ll go back to my storage and see if there are any equipment suitable for you.”
“Thank you, shifu!”
Wu Chenliu smiled lightly: “Let’s go back.”
“Xiao-Ruo, let’s go home.” Wu Qianqing turned to say to Wu Ruo but he was met with the sight of Wu Ruo staring motionlessly at the main entrance.
He followed Wu Ruo’s line of sight and saw Wu Yu entering the main hall with a few other youths from the Wu family.
When Wu Yu saw Wu Ruo and the others, his smile widened: “Sanshu, Xiao-Ruo, Xiao-Xi, long time no see! Have you come to register and evaluate your cultivation levels?”
Wu Xi glared at him angrily.
Wu Qianqing had already heard from Wu Ruo that Wu Zhu’s disappearance had something to do with Wu Yu. However, before things had been properly clarified, it wasn’t a good idea to turn up his nose at Wu Yu, so he nodded in acknowledgement.
Wu Ruo’s lips curled into a smile: “That’s right.”
Wu Yu seemed to want to say something, but someone else shouted at him: “Wu Yu! Come over quickly! I already helped you to queue in line. You just have to channel your spiritual energy and register now!”
Wu Yu made an apologetic expression to Wu Qianqing: “Sanshu, I’ll go and evaluate my spiritual energy first.”
“Hn. Go quickly.”
Wu Yu walked over to his companion, and his companion immediately said: “Wu Yu, how are those people related to you?”
Wu Yu explained: “One of them is my third uncle. The other two are my uncle’s children.”
Wu Yu’s companion snorted: “So that person without spiritual energy is your tangdi! I suggest you not to acknowledge him in places with a lot of people in the future. He’s a fucking embarrassment. You had better not hang around him, otherwise you’ll also get humiliated like him.”
Wu Xi, standing not too far off, heard these words and was so angered that she wanted to run over and beat the person up.
Wu Qianqing said with a heavy expression: “Don’t bother with such people.”
Wu Chenliu glanced indifferently at the person who had spoken: “Xiao-Xi, your dad is right. Such people are not worth your time and attention.”
“I’m just upset for erge.” Wu Xi said with reddened eyes.
“…” Wu Ruo narrowed his gaze, staring at Wu Yu’s companion intently. It was as if he wanted to commit this person to memory. After that, he comforted Wu Xi: “I’m alright. You don’t have to feel upset for me. Whether a person has spiritual energy or not is all predetermined.”
Wu Yu’s companion glanced at them disdainfully: “Wu Yu, it’s your turn. Hurry and evaluate your cultivation level.”
Wu Yu looked at Wu Xi, who had been angered half to death, out of the corner of his eye. A cold sneer flickered across his features. He stepped forward and placed his hand on the spiritual light mirror. Closely after, the spiritual light mirror displayed a ‘six’.
Wu Yu’s companion said delightedly: “Wu Yu, you rose another level! Good heavens, you’re way too godmoded. I remember you were still at the fifth level before the Four Clans Festival. It’s only been a while since then, and you’ve already risen by another level!”
Surprise flashed across Wu Qianqing and Wu Xi’s faces. When Wu Yu had left for his experience training, he had only been a fourth level practitioner. Now, it had only been a little over half a year and he had actually risen by two levels. His cultivation was even higher than Wu Qianqing. Because Wu Qianqing had been injured before, his current cultivation level had stagnated at the fifth level. He would need quite a few years before he would be able to increase his cultivation level, or he might only ever be at the fifth level for the rest of his life.
Wu Ruo looked toward the ‘six’ on the spiritual light mirror, his expression minutely seemed to change.
Wu Yu smiled happily: “That’s right. I didn’t think that I would be able to improve so quickly.”
He turned to look towards Wu Ruo and the others: “Sanshu, Xiao-Xi, Xiao-Ruo, my cultivation is at the sixth level!”
Wu Xi snorted coldly.
Wu Qianqing nodded in acknowledgement.
Wu Ruo smiled and congratulated him: “Congratulations, wuge. I hope that wuge will keep working hard and quickly rise to the seventh level.”
“I will.”
Wu Ruo turned to Wu Qianqing and the others, then said: “Dad, let’s go.”
When Wu Xi heard that they could leave, she hurriedly tugged Wu Chenliu away because she really didn’t like hanging around people like Wu Yu.
After they left, the smile fell off of Wu Yu’s face. He asked his companion: “Shunren, what was my uncle’s cultivation level?”
Wu Shunren said derisively: “Just now I saw his evaluation was only fifth level, it’s even lower than yours. You even said that your uncle was the most gifted practitioner in your clan. It seems to me that he’s just so-so. Wu Yu, as long as you work a little harder, who knows, maybe in a few decades, you’ll be able to become a ninth level practitioner.”
When Wu Yu heard the words ‘ninth level’, it seemed as though lasers of light were shooting out of his eyes; if only he could immediately turn into a ninth level practitioner.
Wu Shunren patted his shoulder: “Let’s go and register quick.”
“Hn.”
After Wu Yu and Wu Shunren finished registering, they left with their other companions.
When the Wu family’s clan leader, who had been standing in a corner this entire time, saw that they had left, he walked to the registration table. He dragged the disciple in charge of registration to a place where there was no one else, and quietly said a few sentences to them.
After the disciple in charge of registration finished listening to the Wu family clan leader’s words: “This… this doesn’t seem right? If someone finds out, I’ll be punished.”
The Wu family’s clan leader guaranteed to them: “You don’t have to worry about this. If things fail and are revealed, Lord State Tutor will help you take responsibility. He definitely won’t let you be punished.”
The disciple in charge of registation asked: “Really?”
The Wu family’s clan leader took a stack of money out of his sleeves, discreetly stuffing them into the hands of the disciple in charge of registration: “Absolutely. Just relax and do as I say.”
The disciple in charge of registration stuffed the money into their sleeves, then, they secretly felt the thickness of the stack. They realized that it was quite a lot of money, so they immediately agreed without hesitation: “Alright, once the registration ends, I’ll do as you instructed.”
The Wu family’s clan leader smiled in satisfaction. He reminded the disciple again that they definitely had to remember to do as he had instructed before he left the registration’s main hall.
The disciple in charge of registration smirked derisively: “He even said it was a junior of his own clan. Who harms their own clan members like that? It’s a good thing I’m not an Wu family member.”
They returned to the registration table. After everyone had completed registrations, they looked around discreetly to check if there was anyone else. After that, they quickly flipped to the page that Wu Ruo had registered on. They used a special colour pigment to erase Wu Ruo from the first level pracititioners’ competitions, then they filled Wu Ruo’s name onto the page of eighth level practitioners. Then, they submitted the registration book to the supervisor.
Wu Ruo, who had his cultivation level competition field modified, seemed completely unaware. After they returned to Hei Manor, and he had sent Wu Xi and Wu Qianqing back to their own quarters, he left Hei Manor again and boarded the horse carriage that was still stopped by the entrance.
He didn’t instruct the driver to drive the carriage away. He only waited inside the carriage. The guard on duty at the entrance was especially confused by Wu Ruo’s actions. They simply couldn’t figure out what Wu Ruo was doing waiting inside the carriage.
After half a shichen, Wu Ruo alighted from the horse carriage yet his expression seemed to carry a hint of fury. He strode into Hei Manor and arrived at the main hall.
Hei Xuantang, who was currently discussing some matters with Hei Xuanyi, was frightened by Wu Ruo’s expression of anger: “Dasao, what happened to you? Who provoked you?”
Wu Ruo was so angered that he took Hei Xuanyi’s drink and finished it in one breath. With a loud slam, he smashed it back onto the tabletop. In an instance, the cup broke into two halves: “Nothing.”
Hei Xuanyi: “…”
Being so angry, and still calling it ‘nothing’?
Hei Xuantang discreetly said into Hei Xuanyi’s ear: “Dage, did you not serve dasao properly last night?”
Hei Xuanyi shot a glare at him, then pushed Hei Xuantang’s head away and asked: “It’s really nothing?”
“It’s really nothing.” Wu Ruo smiled coldly: “I’m even particularly happy.”
“Dasao, are you speaking in opposites? Which part of you looks happy?”
Wu Ruo glared at him: “If I say I’m happy, it means I’m happy. In another five days, it’ll be the ten major families’ competition. When the time comes, you have to properly watch me compete. And you also have to bet on me winning.”
“That’s for sure.”
“Bet all of your assets on me.”
Hei Xuantang: “…”
Hei Xuanyi: “…”
