Chapter 53
Three days had passed. At five o’clock in the afternoon, Song Linsheng and Mei Qingyi sat under the umbrella again.
Mei Qingyi had dark circles under his eyes, obviously he hadn’t had much rest in the past two days. Song Linsheng also looked a little tired, but he was used to this, so he looked better than Mei Qingyi.
“The result.” Song Linsheng said.
For the past three days, Song Linsheng and Mei Qingyi lived under the same roof. They lived together in this small building for three days. They ate, occasionally exchanged a few words, and sometimes went to the racetrack for a run, but mostly remained silent.
During this period, Song Linsheng did not refuse the various tests Mei Qingyi gave. But these tests were done twice, once during the day and once at night.
When Mei Qingyi saw Song Linsheng of night time for the first time, he remembered another person who often chatted with him on WeChat.
That person’s boyfriend seemed to have the same symptoms.
In the wide world, some coincidences might not be coincidences at all.
“Since you came to me, you must have made some guesses before. What were your previous guesses?” Mei Qingyi rubbed his temples.
“Split personality.” Song Linsheng threw out these words without hesitation.
“Split personality?” Mei Qingyi murmured, sure enough.
Song Linsheng clenched his hands tightly. He was a bit nervous. He had thought about this countless times before, feeling indifferent. At worst, he could just close his eyes and let everything disappear like before. But at this moment, facing the results, he started to feel uneasy and scared. Perhaps only with a gun to his head could he understand what he truly wanted deep down.
He wanted Shi Nan, and he wanted to be with him for a lifetime. Even if he lived in darkness all his life, as long as the sun occasionally shined on him, he would be willing to do so.
He was willing to die for this.
“Amnesia.” Mei Qingyi gave the answer.
At this moment, Song Linsheng couldn’t describe what he felt, his palms were covered with sweat.
Then he felt relieved.
“Over the past three days, I’ve interacted with both of you separately, talked, observed, and conducted the same tests. Your behaviors, ways of thinking, everything is the same. You do not have dissociative identity disorder. I believe this is intermittent amnesia,” Mei Qingyi said.
“Of course, intermittent amnesia is just my temporary conclusion based on the observations of the past few days of observation. If you want a more accurate diagnosis, you need to do detailed examinations,” Mei Qingyi said. “But, it’s definitely not a split personality.”
After Mei Qingyi said so much, Song Linsheng’s expression didn’t change much. He just raised his hand and looked at his watch: “It’s almost six o’clock. Wait a minute, you will need to tell the result once more. ”
At a quarter past six, Song Linsheng came down from upstairs. Mei Qingyi sat under the umbrella and drank his third cup of coffee, then looked at the person who left in front of him twenty minutes ago and now came back.
Song Linsheng sat down in front of him and said calmly: “The result.”
Mei Qingyi raised his eyebrows. If the Shi Nan he knew was indeed related to Song Linsheng, then he was now experiencing Shi Nan’s inner conflict.
Only true love should be able to endure it.
“What was your previous guess?” Mei Qingyi asked the same question a second time.
“Split personality.”
Song Linsheng held his right hand with his left hand. From the moment he planned to see Mei Qingyi, he began to think about all the possibilities, but without exception, all possibilities revolved around Shi Nan.
As long as Shi Nan was happy, he would face any consequences.
“Amnesia.” Mei Qingyi said.
Song Linsheng looked at the clouds in the sky and suddenly felt relaxed.
Shi Nan was absent-minded at work that day. From time to time, he picked up his mobile phone and looked at the chat history.
He sent the same confession to two people. Song Xiaobai didn’t reply to him, and Song Linsheng didn’t reply to him either.
Shi Nan felt like his heartfelt confession was fed to the dogs, feeling like a complete joke.
Such a deep and affectionate sentence, yet he didn’t even get a punctuation mark in return?
Shi Nan originally wanted to ask when he would return from his business trip, but seeing his ignored, sour love confession, he decided not to.
But if he didn’t ask, Shi Nan couldn’t help but worry. Could something have happened? Otherwise, why wasn’t there a response?
Shi Nan still couldn’t help but call Song Linsheng.
It was Song Xiaobai at this time during the day, so Shi Nan called Song Xiaobai.
The phone was picked up, but there was no word on the other side. Shi Nan was a little nervous and his throat was dry: “Are you okay?”
A few seconds later, the other side laughed and shouted in a low voice: “Shi Nan .”
Shi Nan breathed a sigh of relief first, and then hummed.
Shi Nan was still angry that he didn’t reply to his message and didn’t want to talk, while Song Linsheng didn’t seem to be planning to speak. Both of them held their phones and listened to each other’s breathing through the receiver.
It felt like a long time had passed, yet only a moment, when Song Linsheng’s gentle voice came through: “I’ll be back tomorrow.”
Shi Nan gently responded: “Okay.”
The next day was a day off. Shi Nan took Ding Yu to the mall to buy some daily necessities, and then went to the airport to pick up Gu Shuwei. Gu Shuwei couldn’t stay over there anymore and flew over after handling some things.
The family of three returned to the rented house together.
Gu Shuwei was very happy and took out a box from his bag: “This is Dragon Beard Candy. I went to find that old gentleman amd specifically asked him to make it for you. You can try it to see if it tastes the same as before.”
On the table, there was also dragon beard candy that Ding Yu had specially made for Shi Nan the day before. She had watched a video online and spent a whole day making it.
And now, Gu Shuwei brought dragon beard candy that he had begged the old gentleman to personally make. Shi Nan felt a mix of emotions in his chest, full and overwhelming.
“Two boxes.” Gu Shuwei took out another box, “You and Lin Sheng each have one box. It was like this before. Dad doesn’t play favorites.”
Shi Nan pinched a piece and put it in his mouth, and the sweet taste swept over his taste buds.
It was very different from what Ding Yu had made, bringing a sense of nostalgia that made him want to cry.
Song Linsheng did not see Shi Nan when he returned home, so he called Shi Nan.
Song Linsheng didn’t take the elevator, but took the stairs directly down two floors. The door of the old lady’s house where he had learnt to make baked pumpkin with egg yolk 1 reference from chapter 35 was open, and Shi Nan leaned on the door and looked at him.
The call Shi Nan received was from Song Xiaobai, and it was now 5:10 in the afternoon, so logically it should be Song Xiaobai.
But after not seeing him for a few days, he wasn’t sure.
“Who are you?” Shi Nan stopped at the door to confirm his identity.
Song Linsheng looked at him with raised eyebrows for a while, then smiled and said lazily: “Guess.”
Shi Nan was in a trance, feeling that Song Linsheng seemed a little different after not seeing him for a few days.
It wasn’t obvious before, but Song Linsheng now gave off a relaxed vibe.
“Do you think I can guess?” Shi Nan squinted at him.
He was still upset about his unreturned confession, feeling uncomfortable.
“I guess you might not guess who I am.” Song Linsheng lightly tapped his head, then walked past him into the house to greet Gu Shuwei and Ding Yu.
Shi Nan was sure that this was Song Xiaobai.
Shi Nan closed the door and followed in with a not-so-good mood.
Gu Shuwei held the box and asked Song Linsheng to eat Dragon Beard Candy: “This is what you often ate when you were young.”
Shi Nan saw Song Linsheng visibly freeze for a moment.
Shi Nan suddenly realized that those childhood memories were not necessarily good for Song Linsheng.
Shi Nan walked over and took the box from Gu Shuwei’s hand: “It’s almost time for dinner. Don’t eat sweets now.”
Gu Shuwei didn’t notice the change in the atmosphere and ran to the kitchen to help Ding Yu cook. There was a range hood in the kitchen. There was a buzzing sound mixed with the couple’s voices. Song Linsheng glanced at the clock on the wall, it read five-twenty.
When Shi Nan saw Song Linsheng looking at his watch in a daze, he quietly sat down next to him and held his hand: “What’s wrong with you?”
Song Linsheng slowly looked away, then fell on Shi Nan’s face, and whispered: “I missed you.”
Shi Nan: “…”
Damn it, that’s cheating. How was he supposed to respond to that?
It seemed like Song Linsheng didn’t expect a response, and he withdrew his hand from Shi Nan’s, moving a little further away.
Shi Nan: “…”
Shi Nan wanted to move closer again, but Song Linsheng pointed at him: “Stay there, don’t move.”
Shi Nan paused, picked up a pillow from the sofa, and threw it: “Song Linsheng, damn you.”
Old and new grievances combined, Shi Nan pressed Song Linsheng onto the sofa and hit him with the pillow. The two people in the kitchen heard the commotion and came out to intervene. Shi Nan glared at the smiling Song Linsheng angrily, pointing to the door: “Get out.”
Song Linsheng actually got up and walked out.
“Nan Nan, what’s the matter with you?” Ding Yu wanted to go over and stop Song Linsheng, but Shi Nan pulled her back. Shi Nan still felt it was not enough and added arrogantly, “If you have the ability, stay away from me in the future.”
Song Linsheng walked to the door, stopped, turned around, and smiled: “I can answer you now, I don’t have that ability.”
Gu Shuwei and Ding Yu looked at the two of them bickering like children, and smiled helplessly.
Ding Yu urged Shi Nan to go upstairs and call Song Linsheng back. Shi Nan waved his hand and said he would come back soon.
Ding Yu couldn’t say anything more and returned to the kitchen to continue cooking.
At 6:15, Shi Nan received a call from Song Linsheng and asked where he was.
Song Linsheng didn’t take the elevator and went straight down the stairs. Shi Nan was leaning on the door and looking at him.
Their eyes met, and Shi Nan felt a bit troubled. This relaxed air around Song Linsheng made it hard to tell from his eyes or expressions, but he feared Song Xiaobai might be playing tricks, so he needed to confirm the identity as usual.
“Who are you?” Shi Nan squinted his eyes.
Song Linsheng looked at Shi Nan for a while. After meeting Mei Qingyi to confirm, he was now much more relaxed than before, and he no longer had so many constraints when facing Shi Nan. After all, he could love him openly now.
“Guess.” Song Linsheng said with a smile.
Shi Nan: “…”
Damn it, this must be Song Xiaobai.
Shi Nan turned around and walked into the house.
After walking a few steps, Shi Nan felt something was wrong, so he stopped again and looked back.
Song Linsheng still looked at him with a smile and planned to follow him in.
Shi Nan was confused and felt that something was not right.
Shi Nan thought for a moment and reached out to grab Song Linsheng’s hand. Song Linsheng didn’t hide. When Shi Nan grabbed him, he held Shi Nan’s hand and squeezed Shi Nan’s fingers twice.
Shi Nan breathed a sigh of relief, this was not Song Xiaobai.
Shi Nan took a step forward and hugged Song Linsheng, then glared at him: “Why are you pretending to be him?”
Young people these days, really fighting at the head of the bed and making peace at the foot of the bed. 2 The idiom “床头打架床尾和” (chuángtóu dǎjià chuángwěi hé) literally translates to “fighting at the head of the bed, making peace at the foot of the bed.” It is often used to describe conflicts or disagreements between people that are resolved amicably or peacefully. It suggests that conflicts, even if they arise, can be smoothed over and lead to a positive outcome.
“Pretending to be… him?” Song Linsheng raised his eyebrows and his voice became a little darker, “Shi Nan, do you think I am him?”
“Ah…” Shi Nan shook his head without hesitation, denying, “No.”
“No?” Song Linsheng repeated without meaning, then pushed Shi Nan away and entered the house.
Song Xiaobai probably had already greeted Gu Shuwei and Ding Yu, so Song Linsheng went directly to the sofa and sat down.
The Dragon Beard Candy had already been put away by Shi Nan, and Song Linsheng did not see it.
He was in a good mood.
Shi Nan could feel it. After all, Song Linsheng didn’t like to laugh very much before. Even when he was in a good mood, he could only curl his lips.
But from the moment he walked in today, he had a slight smile on his face.
The same applied for Song Xiaobai, one could clearly feel that he was in a good mood.
Shi Nan snuggled up to him cautiously and asked, “Did going on a business trip make you this happy?”
“Not bad.” Song Linsheng said.
Shi Nan couldn’t help but pout. It had only been a few days, and it seemed like he had become a different person after the trip.
“What, being with me is so suffocating that you feel better as soon as you leave?” Shi Nan deliberately picked a fight.
The smile on Song Linsheng’s lips froze.
He didn’t understand why the topic had taken such a complicated turn.
Song Linsheng gradually lost the smile on his face.
Shi Nan caught a glimpse of his fading smile and became angry: “What is it, you can’t smile anymore when you see me?”
Song Linsheng: “…”
Gu Shuwei and Ding Yu heard the commotion outside and came out, looking a bit bewildered.
It was just like half an hour ago, with their son single-handedly attacking Song Linsheng, looking fierce and angry. Song Linsheng allowed the pillow to hit his shoulder a few times before he finally chuckled.
Gu Shuwei was silent for a while, then nudged Ding Yu back into the kitchen.
In the final analysis, what made Shi Nan angry was the message that he didn’t receive a reply to.
Although he was angry when Song Xiaobai didn’t reply, it was understandable.
But the person in front of him not responding to his message made him feel very frustrated and embarrassed.
During dinner, Ding Yu acted like she was trying to reconcile two quarreling three-year-olds, saying a few words to this one and a few to that one. After a while, she noticed that the shrimp Song Linsheng had peeled ended up in Shi Nan’s bowl, and the braised pork she had given to Song Linsheng was forcibly taken by Shi Nan.
Under the table, Gu Shuwei tugged on Ding Yu’s sleeve. The two exchanged a glance and tactfully changed the subject.
In the evening, Shi Nan took a shower and went to bed first, with only the bedside lamp on in the room.
Song Linsheng came in after taking a shower, lifted the quilt and got into bed, and then gently hugged Shi Nan from behind. Shi Nan’s back stiffened.
He was still angry, but he also wanted to be held like this. As he struggled with his conflicting feelings, he forgot to pull away.
With one hand propped on the side, Song Linsheng looked down at the person with closed eyes, affectionately kissing his earlobe and whispering in his ear, “I received a message last night. I wanted to reply but felt it wasn’t formal enough.”
Shi Nan didn’t move, but his ears perked up.
“Some things can’t be said in a message or over the phone. I want to say them to your face.”
Shi Nan felt a tickling sensation in his earlobe that spread throughout his entire body.
“Shi Nan, I love you. ”
