Everyone at the company was curious about Wei Ning, as it was the first time he had brought his spouse to the office. While Zhu Yu was present, they didn’t dare to gossip, but as soon as Zhu Yu followed Wei Ning into his office, the chatter began.
“Did you see that? Wei Ning was following behind his wife the whole time, like his entire world revolves around her. Whoever said their relationship was bad, I’m going to punch them—I’ve even got photos to prove it!”
“Did you catch a whiff of the scent on Wei Ning’s wife?”
“Of course, who wouldn’t? That mix of musk and storax is definitely Wei Ning’s pheromone.”
“Man, Wei Ning’s possessiveness is off the charts. That scent is strong.”
“Tsk, tsk, tsk.”
“Have you heard enough?” Wei Ning asked Zhu Yu, who had been eavesdropping.
Zhu Yu quickly closed the door, which had been slightly ajar, and replied seriously, “Yeah, I got it.”
A vein popped on Wei Ning’s forehead. “You need to be more careful at the company. Don’t blow our cover.” His personal image could affect the company’s interests, and they couldn’t afford to be careless.
Zhu Yu nodded, “OK, OK.”
Wei Ning couldn’t stand how casual Zhu Yu was while wearing his face. “Be more serious.”
Zhu Yu muttered under his breath, “You change your tune real quick once we’re out of bed.”
Wei Ning’s expression darkened instantly.
Zhu Yu continued, “You need to let it go. I only bit you once. How long are you going to keep giving me the cold shoulder?”
Wei Ning snapped, “Don’t mention this morning again.”
Zhu Yu shrugged, “Fine.”
Wei Ning then said, “This afternoon, there’s an important meeting with several board members attending. Do you think you can handle it?”
Zhu Yu straightened up, “What do you think?”
Wei Ning sighed, “…”
Zhu Yu thought for a moment and then said seriously, “But I don’t even know all of your board members.”
Wei Ning checked the time. It was already past ten o’clock. It wasn’t feasible to cram all the knowledge Zhu Yu needed for the meeting, and there was no justifiable reason to cancel it.
“I’ll go with you.” Wei Ning decided.
Zhu Yu didn’t joke around when it came to serious matters. Hearing Wei Ning’s decision, he nodded and followed along, trying to quickly absorb some tips on how to act like a corporate boss. During the meeting, he planned to simply repeat whatever Wei Ning advised.
They thought they had it all figured out, but when they reached the conference room, some of the board members stopped them from entering.
“What’s an omega doing here? Shouldn’t you be staying at home instead of meddling in business?” The reprimand came from Wei Ning’s distant uncle, who looked down on him with open disdain. “Your job is to give the Wei family an outstanding heir, not to get involved in things that don’t concern you!”
Wei Ning was speechless. He had always known that omegas faced discrimination in the workplace, but he hadn’t expected his uncle to still hold such outdated views in 2024.
Before Wei Ning could argue back, Zhu Yu stepped forward. “Who’s the chairman here, you or me? My wife also has shares, so what’s wrong with bringing her to the meeting?”
The distant uncle was momentarily stunned, unable to believe his eyes. Rumor had it that Wei Ning and his wife didn’t get along, but with how fiercely he was defending her, how could that be true?
Zhu Yu dragged Wei Ning into the conference room. “Come in if you want.” he mocked.
The distant uncle felt awkward for a moment but eventually swallowed his pride and attended the meeting. Despite owning only a small number of shares, he couldn’t afford to miss a meeting that concerned the distribution of profits.
After Zhu Yu’s bold statement defending his wife, no one at the meeting dared to criticize Zhu Yu for consulting Wei Ning before making any comments. Afterward, however, a few board members who thought they were on friendly terms with Wei Ning teased him. “Wow, it looks like you’re completely under your wife’s thumb now.”
Zhu Yu humbly nodded, “That’s right. I, Wei Ning—” He made sure to emphasize his name, “—am proud of loving my wife and family.”
Wei Ning: “…”
On the way home that evening, Wei Ning seemed hesitant.
Zhu Yu: “???”
Finally, Wei Ning spoke in a somber tone, “Does this happen often?” Zhu Yu was his legally married partner, and no matter their personal differences, he couldn’t stand the thought of anyone insulting or belittling her.
As an alpha, even if only formerly, the instinct to protect omega was deeply ingrained in him.
Zhu Yu paused, thinking for a moment. “I’m used to it.”
“You never mentioned it to me.” Wei Ning rubbed his temples, feeling a bit frustrated.
“You’re always out working. We barely talk as much in a year as we have today. How would I bring it up to you?” Zhu Yu’s response was straightforward.
Wei Ning was taken aback.
Zhu Yu sniffled.
Feeling awkward, Wei Ning pulled out a tissue, intending to help Zhu Yu wipe away any tears.
Zhu Yu: “Ah, ah, ah—choo!”
Wei Ning: “…”
Zhu Yu took the tissue and blew his nose, then politely said, “Thanks.”
Wei Ning’s expression softened as he stared at Zhu Yu for a moment, lost in thought. Then, it suddenly hit him. Sure, he worked long hours, but there were days off when he was home. Whenever he had tried to talk to Zhu Yu during those times, he had received no response, not even half a word.
Wei Ning opened his mouth, intending to argue.
But then Zhu Yu interrupted, frowning in confusion. “Why do I smell peaches again?”
Wei Ning: “…”
Zhu Yu moved closer, pressing his nose to the back of Wei Ning’s neck. Wei Ning froze.
Zhu Yu sniffed hard, confirming what he suspected. “Are you going into heat again?”
Wei Ning: “…”
Zhu Yu slapped his thigh in mock exasperation. “I go eight years with a clear mind, and now you’re the one who’s impure? Who would’ve thought! You never seemed the type before.” Who would have guessed that behind Wei Ning’s proper exterior lay a mind filled with who knows what, to the point that he could go into heat twice in a single day?
Having experienced heat once, Wei Ning recognized the gradual increase in his body temperature. He knew he was indeed going into heat. Unlike in the morning, he didn’t get angry. Instead, he calmly said, “Come on, just one bite.”
Zhu Yu: “…” Now that Wei Ning was calm, Zhu Yu suddenly didn’t want to cooperate. “Since when did you get so familiar with this?”
Wei Ning wore an expression of resignation. “It’s your body, isn’t it?”
Reluctantly, Zhu Yu shuffled over to Wei Ning. Seeing the red marks still on Wei Ning’s neck from earlier, he grumbled, “I feel bad for my body.”
Wei Ning softly suggested, “Even saliva might help a bit.”
“What did you say?” Zhu Yu hadn’t fully processed the words before Wei Ning pushed him against the wall.
With one hand resting against the wall by Zhu Yu’s ear, Wei Ning stood on tiptoe and sealed Zhu Yu’s lips with his own, drawing out the alpha’s saliva.
Zhu Yu’s eyes widened as he stared at Wei Ning. After stepping back, Wei Ning suddenly realized what he had just done.
“It was just to suppress the heat.” Wei Ning tried to explain, desperate to rationalize his actions. His heat must have clouded his judgment.
