RES Chapter 97

"Why aren't the lights on?"

After a long time, the pungent smell of disinfectant from the hospital spread from the corridor to the ward.

Chi Qiu on the hospital bed had a fluid drip on his right hand, and all injuries were treated. Fortunately, all were some skin injuries with no major impact. It was enough to rest for a while.

Lu Ming held his left hand, sitting on the edge of the bed, he had never frown so much.

Chi Qiu, who closed his eyes tightly, seemed to have dreamed something as he muttered something. Lu Ming got closer but didn’t understand it. He rubbed the back of Chi Qiu’s hand and put it against his lips, his eyes never leaving Chi Qiu even for half a millimeter.

They seemed to have not been so peacefully close for a long time that Lu Ming was reluctant to walk away half a step.

Today they came in a hurry and it was the main hospital nearby, so Lu Ming couldn’t get a separate ward. He listened to the hospital first, and temporarily placed Chi Qiu in an ordinary three-person ward.

Chi Qiu slept on the third hospital bed, by the window.

There was an older aunt in the second bed. When she saw that the patient in the first bed had vomited a lot of unpleasant acidic water again, she walked to the window with a bitter face and opened it to let in some air.

Perhaps the atmosphere in the ward was too stuffy, she took the initiative to talk to Lu Ming and said with concern: “Young man, what’s wrong with your brother?”

Lu Ming did not hide his relationship with Chi Qiu and seriously replied: “He is my partner.” He said, “He accidentally fell down the stairs.”

Although this aunt was a little old, she was an open-minded person. She didn’t mean to discriminate, and instead she kindly advised: “So careless, fortunately it’s nothing serious. Don’t worry, just now the doctor came in and said he only has a little skin trauma. In addition, he was under great mental pressure at ordinary times. Now, give him the chance to sleep a little deeper.”

Lu Ming nodded: “En.”

“You young people ah, you have more work pressure than our generation. So, you should have a good rest, you can’t stay up late…” As soon as she started chatting, it was endless.

It was probably because the patient in bed one was too boring so she was about to choke up her words.

Lu Ming couldn’t help feeling uncomfortable when he heard the aunt mention the doctor talking about ‘mental stress’. Perhaps most of Chi Qiu’s stress was caused by him. He complained about his own mistakes and was in a low mood, so he stopped chatting with this aunt.

Outside the window was the rustling of autumn leaves, Lu Ming looked deeply at Chi Qiu.

After a while, he stretched out his hand to help Chi Qiu stroke his slightly long hair to prevent them from touching the ointment on the wound.

Within ten minutes, his personal assistant and Auntie Su came back from outside. The assistant told him that everything was done.

Immediately after that, a nurse came in with a caretaker. They pushed Chi Qiu’s bed out and replaced it in a single ward.

This time, the air in the ward was better and the environment was much cleaner.

Lu Ming said to the assistant: “Thanks for your hard work. There’s nothing left to do, you can go back.”

The assistant felt the change in Lu Ming’s tone and felt that Lu Ming was nourished by marriage that even his attitude towards his subordinates was no longer so cold and icy. She was not used to it. Pointing to the door, she said: “I ordered dinner for you and Auntie Su, I guess it will be delivered soon, I’ll go down and get it for you before going home.”

“Okay, thank you.”

However, Lu Ming had no appetite, as did Auntie Su.

Auntie Su looked at Chi Qiu worriedly. Once the assistant left, she turned her head and wiped the tears that came out of her eyes: “Young Master just came out of the hospital a while ago… How can Mr. Lin be so cruel, so heartless. Over the years, Young Master has suffered many wrongs in order to get along with him. He doesn’t even allow me to tell Mrs. Chi. ”

Auntie Su came closer and sadly covered Chi Qiu’s arm: “Being beaten like this, when Mrs. Chi knows it she will be so distressed…”

She just called Chi Lanyan, but it was midnight on Chi Lanyan’s side, so it was not answered.

Since the doctor said it was not serious, Auntie Su didn’t continue calling her.

She choked for a moment, then thanked Lu Ming: “Young Master Lu, thank you very much today. If you hadn’t been waiting outside, I wouldn’t have known who to call…”

At that time, she was so anxious that she couldn’t even find the phone number of the security room. Fortunately, Lu Ming persevered and called her once a day to ask her to collect his things. So in her call log, the first number was Lu Ming’s.

Without thinking about it, Auntie Su dialed Lu Ming’s number directly.

Fortunately, Lu Ming was at the gate of the community. He answered the phone in seconds, and after Auntie Su pressed the enter button for the entrance, he drove to the front yard of the Chi family’s villa as soon as possible. Due to driving so fast, the wheels accidentally crushed a brick in the front yard.

To be honest, when Lu Ming stepped into the villa and saw that Chi Qiu’s face was full of injuries, his whole heart crinkled together. Anger and heartache entwined, directly shattering Lu Ming’s sanity.

Knowing that Lin Yuming and Chi Xia did it, Lu Ming was overwhelmed with guilt. In his impression, Chi Qiu had always been gentle, and had always been at peace with his stepfather and others. Now there was such a big conflict, it must be because what he did was found out, so that Chi Qiu was implicated.

Lu Ming regretted it.

On his way to take Chi Qiu to the hospital, while driving, he said to Auntie Su, who was embracing Chi Qiu in tears in the back seat: “I remember Chi Qiu said that the villa is equipped with cameras in the common areas.”

Aunt Su wiped away her tears with the back of her hand: “Yes, what are you asking this for, Young Master Lu?”

“I need to help Chi Qiu keep a piece of video evidence in advance.” Lu Ming’s gaze was deep and serious, “Auntie Su, can you watch the playback on your phone?”

After understanding Lu Ming’s meaning, Aunt Su hastily took out her own cell phone and found the software to view the surveillance. Under the guidance of Lu Ming, she immediately saved the day’s surveillance record and sent a copy to Lu Ming’s phone.

The next thing, they should wait for Chi Qiu to wake up.

……

And now, Lu Ming gritted his teeth: “Do they… always treat Chi Qiu like this?”

Auntie Su knew she had said the wrong thing and covered her mouth: “No! It’s really the first time he beat him. Don’t get me wrong.”

“No, I’m not just referring to hitting him.”

There should be more grievances that were difficult for Chi Qiu to talk about with others.

Lu Ming, who had been absent from Chi Qiu for ten years, begged her in distress: “Auntie Su, can you tell me about Chi Qiu’s life over the years? I know he’s not happy, but I’ve never asked him properly, I’ve never cared for him properly, I don’t even know what his favorite food is.”

There was so much. He knew that Chi Qiu didn’t like coriander. At home, Chi Qiu’s preference for dishes always followed Lu Ming’s preference.

Listening to his self-blame, Auntie Su could only comfort him by saying: “Young Master Lu, don’t say that. Actually, Young Master is not a picky eater, he just doesn’t like sweets.”

Who knew this sentence directly poured cold water on Lu Ming, his shoulders tightened, and he really wanted to slap himself twice.

Seeing his face change dramatically, Auntie Su wondered which of her words was wrong, so she stomped her foot in a hurry and walked to the side.

Lu Ming said: “I thought I had done well enough during the time I was married to Chi Qiu, but these are only self-comforting illusions. No matter what reasons I have, I have failed Chi Qiu a lot. He’s ignoring me now, not wanting to give me a chance, and it’s all my fault.”

Auntie Su lowered her head, unable to give any useful advice.

Lu Ming pressed the back of Chi Qiu’s hand to his cheek and said in a deep voice: “But I want to know, during the ten years I was away, how did Chi Qiu really live?”

What kind of life was it that made Chi Qiu running to him and fleeing the Chi family in a desperate attempt at the moment he was reunited with him; Only then did Chi Qiu, who had occasionally been wayward and angry, smooth out the edges and corners, leaving only the ingenuity and patience in the marriage.

If not for Chi Xia’s return, tearing up the illusion between them, he was afraid that until today, Chi Qiu would still be living the same kind of married life with a mask.

For so long, no one had ever cared for him properly and deeply, and quietly listened to what he really wanted to say in his heart.

Lu Ming also felt that he was going too far, he didn’t even know Chi Qiu didn’t like sweet things.

Obviously two of them had drunk so many cups of full sugar milk tea together, so why couldn’t he notice what Chi Qiu’s slightly frowning brows mean?

“Auntie Su, please.”

Auntie Su sighed and stopped insisting. She found a place to sit down and slowly talked to Lu Ming about Chi Qiu’s affairs. No matter how trivial or important, she couldn’t stop talking. Every single one of them made people feel heartbroken and think that Chi Qiu was too sensible.

It was getting dark.

The nurse came over to remove the vial for Chi Qiu and turned on the light in the ward: “Wait, there is another bottle soon, I’ll remove this first.”

Lu Ming was a little tired, just finished a work call. He didn’t catch what the nurse said. He hurried forward but the nurse had left the ward.

And Chi Qiu, who had slept for a few hours, had a good long dream. In the dream, he had a pair of healthy eyes, and he did many things he wanted to do. The warmest thing was that when he came home, Chi Lanyan and Lu Ming were there. There were gorgeous roses on the table, and his favorite sweet-scented osmanthus was growing in the backyard.

A burst of fragrance came to his nose, and he opened his eyes reluctantly.

The tingling pain spread throughout his body, and Chi Qiu could not even take a big breath. He tried to move his hand, but found his hand was being held.

Beside him, Lu Ming was guarding him every inch of the way. Seeing him awake, Lu Ming stood up anxiously and joyfully: “Chi Qiu!”

The cry entered his ears, and Chi Qiu closed his mouth tightly with a headache. He opened and closed his eyes over and over again, not knowing what he was doing. A dark red scab formed on the surface of his dry lips, and the wound caused the corners of his mouth to ache.

Lu Ming poured a little warm water, and with the utmost care, asked Chi Qiu to sit up. He put a straw in the water cup and handed it over: “Drink some water first, don’t rush to talk.”

Chi Qiu blinked, strangely motionless.

“Chi Qiu?” Lu Ming thought Chi Qiu was angry with him, so said in a warm voice. “Let’s not get mad at me for a while these days, okay? I swear, I won’t say anything more, I’ll do whatever you want me to do. Let me take good care of you and take care of your injuries first.”

Chi Qiu raised his head blankly, his eyes were expressionless.

Lu Ming immediately said, “Auntie Su went back to make porridge for you. I’m the only one in the ward.” What he meant was that Chi Qiu didn’t have to pretend to be blind.

Chi Qiu immediately trembled lightly. Without saying a word, he sluggishly lowered his head. He didn’t drink the water that Lu Ming handed over. Lu Ming had no choice but to put it on the bedside table.

Lu Ming gathered his courage. In front of Chi Qiu, following Chi Qiu’s ‘gaze’, he slowly reached out and took Chi Qiu’s hand.

As a result, Chi Qiu seemed to be startled and pulled his hand in fear.

At this moment, Chi Qiu suddenly struggled to get out of bed and almost tripped. To Lu Ming’s surprise, he faltered and touched the wall, asking repeatedly in the bright ward: “Where are the lights, where are the lights? Why aren’t the lights on?”
