ROBEPTQ chapter 17

Work is Everything to Me

Bai Sijun abruptly lifted the towel, raising his head and trying not to look at Mei Yuchen lying on his legs.

His throat tightened, and he asked, “Why are you lying on my legs?”

“Tired.” Mei Yuchen adjusted his shoulder position, appearing more relaxed. “I want to hear a story.”

Bai Sijun couldn’t help but think that the last time Mei Yuchen lay on his legs, it was also to listen to a story.

He took a deep breath and said, “I’m not good at telling stories.”

Regardless of whether he was good at it or not, he couldn’t let Mei Yuchen take control again. Lowering his head, he met Mei Yuchen’s gaze and said, “Get up.”

Mei Yuchen didn’t move. Bai Sijun gently lifted his thigh, urging him with his eyes.

Mei Yuchen frowned, showing some displeasure. He said, “Bai.”

Bai Sijun’s heart trembled at the address. Mei Yuchen continued, “What kind of person do you think I am?”

If Bai Sijun had to describe what kind of person Mei Yuchen was, he had a lot of complaints in his heart. For a moment, he forgot to ask Mei Yuchen to get up and bluntly said, “You are quite willful.”

Mei Yuchen raised an eyebrow but didn’t refute, appearing to have some self-awareness.

Seeing him so calmly accepting these words, Bai Sijun suddenly lost his temper, giving up the resistance as he slumped on the sofa and said, “Just like now, regardless of whether I agree or not, you just lie down on my legs.”

Mei Yuchen chuckled lightly, seemingly expressing agreement.

“Should I go on?” Bai Sijun asked.

“Sure,” Mei Yuchen lazily replied.

“You like sweets.”

“You are afraid of the cold.”

“You always like to look at me, even though I have no idea what’s so interesting about me.”

As Bai Sijun spoke, Mei Yuchen suddenly smiled. He said, “I look at you because you’re pleasing to look at.”

Bai Sijun furrowed his brows. Here we go again, these ambiguous and unclear words. He suddenly felt a bit annoyed and looked down at Mei Yuchen, saying, “You are clingy, afraid of being alone, don’t want to be alone, so you always ask me to come over.”

As he said this, Bai Sijun noticed that Mei Yuchen gradually withdrew the smile in his eyes, and his expression turned cold.

He suddenly felt that he might have gone too far. He was about to ease the atmosphere when Mei Yuchen lightly said, “You found out.”

Bai Sijun was stunned. He didn’t expect Mei Yuchen to directly admit it. Uncertain, he glanced at him and saw that he had a faint smile on his face again, seemingly self-aware. Mei Yuchen gazed at him with profound eyes and asked, “So, can you come over to keep me company whenever you have time?”

Bai Sijun’s mind hadn’t caught up yet, and he automatically replied, “Sure.”

After saying this, he felt as if he had awakened suddenly and was about to retract that statement. However, Mei Yuchen chuckled and said, “No going back on your word.”

Bai Sijun’s mind suddenly flashed with a thought.

If Mei Yuchen were a woman, he must be a fox spirit.

Rubbing his forehead with a headache, he asked, “Until when do you plan to lie down on my thigh?”

Mei Yuchen smirked, looking at him provocatively, “Didn’t you say I’m clingy?”

Meaning, I’ll show you what it means to be clingy.

Helplessly, Bai Sijun thought, it seems that Mei Yuchen was indeed unhappy with what he said just now. He changed his approach and tried to reason with him, saying, “With you lying like this, my leg is going numb.”

Mei Yuchen fell silent for a moment, then slowly got up. He sat cross-legged next to Bai Sijun, with his knees on Bai Sijun’s leg. His entire upper body leaned against Bai Sijun as if boneless, not much better than lying down.

Veins bulged on Bai Sijun’s forehead, and he asked, “Aren’t you going to continue writing?”

“Why do you always urge me to write?” Mei Yuchen asked, tilting his head with a faint expression that didn’t reveal his thoughts. “Am I just a writing machine in your eyes?”

Bai Sijun pursed his lips, thinking that if he treated Mei Yuchen as a machine, he wouldn’t bother cooking for him or accompanying him shopping.

Before he could answer, Mei Yuchen continued, “Bai, am I just work to you?”

Bai Sijun met Mei Yuchen’s gaze in confusion, wondering what else it could be if not work.

Mei Yuchen pressed his lips tightly, showing clear displeasure.

Bai Sijun suddenly realized that, for Mei Yuchen, he seemed to be more than just an editor. Their interaction pattern was indeed different from that of other editors and writers.

After a moment of thought, he said, “To me, you are indeed just work.”

Mei Yuchen’s expression eased, returning to calmness. He calmly said, “I understand.”

After speaking, he released Bai Sijun’s hand and put his crossed legs on the floor, preparing to stand up.

At this moment, Bai Sijun suddenly grabbed his wrist, looking at the floor awkwardly, and said, “But work is everything to me.”

A strange silence spread in the living room, and Bai Sijun regretted what he had just said. He just wanted to express his willingness to spend time with Mei Yuchen because, besides work, he had nothing else to do. However, when the two sentences were connected, it sounded like he was saying Mei Yuchen was his everything.

That was certainly not the case.

Mei Yuchen laughed lightly, dispelling the gloomy atmosphere. He rubbed Bai Sijun’s drooping head and said softly, “I understand.”

The same words, but the tone was completely different. Bai Sijun could tell that his mood improved, and inexplicably, his own heavy heart also lightened.

Bai Sijun was somewhat lost in thought. He felt that he wasn’t a qualified editor, always being led by the nose by the writer and often unable to control the inexplicable emotions mixed into the work.
