“Listen. I’ve overlooked plenty when it comes to you—the earrings dangling from your ears, your sloppy attire, your rough way of speaking, smoking wherever you please, being late every day, and acting on your own without permission. I’ve turned a blind eye to all those violations. But this time, your selfishness won’t fly.”

With his already intimidating appearance, Onizuka’s words were forceful and commanding. It pressed the man down from above.

Hearing these stern words, Amane opened his mouth as if to retort. But in the end, he closed it without saying a word.

Every point the head raised was true, leaving no room for rebuttal—Amane seemed to realise that, even if begrudgingly.

But being unable to respond only made his eyebrows knit tighter, his eyes were burning with restrained fury, and his lips pressed into a stubborn line. It sent out an aura of rage that radiated off him.

After confirming there was no further objection from Amane, Onizuka reinforced his order.

“Now that you understand, you will team up with Kariya and take care of him. Your job from this point on is to train him until he’s useful. Got it?”

Emphasising his words, Onizuka left the scene as if that concluded the matter.

“…Train him…?”

Amane’s cheeks were flushed with anger, his eyes burning darkly with frustration, and his lips a deep red from being pressed together.

Kouki, unconsciously staring at Amane’s side profile in awe, snapped back when Amane suddenly turned to him and snarled, “What the hell are you staring at, you little brat?”

This was no time to be captivated by him.

Leaving the infuriated Amane behind, Kouki chased after the Squad Commander, who had already exited the room.

“Sir!”

Onizuka, who had been walking down the hallway, came to a halt.

“About the matter of being paired with Honjou-san… isn’t he too much for me?”

He forgot to even use formal language as he blurted out his concern.

“Honjou-san himself doesn’t seem too keen on the idea either. Couldn’t you assign me to someone else…?”

For just a moment, Onizuka’s eyes softened as if he felt sympathy. But he quickly returned to his strict expression.

“Despite how he looks, Honjou is very capable. His methods may be a bit rough, but he produces results. His arrest rate is always the highest in the detective division. And he’s received several commendations.”

“Is that… really true?”

Kouki furrowed his brow, finding it hard to believe.

The number one arrest rate? Him?

“You graduated at the top of your class from the police academy. And I hear you even completed your training in a shortened period. But school is just school. There’s only so much you can learn in one month of training. The knowledge you gained in school and training is merely foundational. In the field, where irregularities are common, it’s practically useless. Especially in our division. You’ll have to pick up practical skills on the job from now on. In that respect, Honjou is a field specialist. You’ll learn a lot from him.”

Onizuka, speaking as though he were instructing him, placed a hand on Kouki’s shoulder. He patted it encouragingly before walking off again. Kouki, left behind, watched him go with a troubled expression.

In the police force, decisions made by the higher-ups are absolute. It seemed even the head of the department, as a mere Squad Commander, couldn’t defy them.

In other words, being paired with Honjou Amane was set in stone. No matter how much he appealed, it wasn’t going to change.

Perhaps if he used his alpha status, he could request a transfer. But Kouki’s pride wouldn’t allow it. Doing that would make it meaningless to have insisted on becoming a field detective.

“Damn it… What kind of punishment is this?”

Kouki clenched his fists tightly and stood in the hallway for a moment. But before long, a simmering heat rose from deep within him.

It hadn’t been an easy road getting here.

He’d made his mother cry when he said he wanted to become a detective, and his father had scolded him, saying, “That’s not a profession fit for an Alpha.” If his eldest brother hadn’t intervened, he might have been kicked out of the Shutou family. Even so, he had been determined to follow his own path.

At the police academy, he struggled to hide the fact that he was an Alpha while dealing with the challenges of communal living.

Overcoming a number of not mere insignificant obstacles, he had made it this far.

This was just another hurdle, and beyond it lay his growth as a detective.

Thinking of it that way, he actually began to feel fired up.

Kouki spun around and headed back to the detective department. As soon as he entered the floor, he could feel the sympathetic stares directed at him. Ignoring the prying eyes of his colleagues, he scanned the room for Honjou Amane—and there he was.

Amane had returned to his desk, making no effort to hide his irritation, radiating an aura of prickly dissatisfaction. None of his colleagues dared to get close, leaving a three-metre radius of empty space around him.

Feeling the eyes of the other detectives on him, Kouki approached Amane.

He stood beside the man who was sitting with his arms crossed, his long legs sprawled on the floor, and his back leaning against the chair.

“Honjou-san.”

After calling out to him, he folded his body in half, with his arms pressed against his sides. It was the first time in his life that he bowed his head to someone. Not only had he never encountered such a situation before, but he had also been taught that ‘as an Alpha, it is unacceptable to bow one’s head without reason’.

It was unfortunate that his first partner was a power-harassing man. But he was still a senior at the workplace. As such, he had no choice but to bow his head and ask for guidance.

“There may be areas where I fall short as a partner, but I would appreciate your guidance.”

“Who the hell would be willing to guide you?!”

Kouki, who had expected a proper response to his polite gesture, was taken aback by the childish outburst.

Startled, he looked up just as the man abruptly stood up from his chair.

“That old raccoon! Foisting this useless thing on me!”

Before Kariya could digest that the ‘old raccoon’ referred to the head of the department and that the ‘useless thing’ was himself, Amane suddenly kicked the trash can at his feet. The flying trash can hit a pillar and fell to the floor, scattering the contents.

Kouki silently watched the man’s immature outburst against the office equipment. Amane brushed the hair off his face and snorted. “…Well, whatever. You won’t last even three days anyway…”
