He waited at the designated desk as instructed. But Seo never returned after leaving with the needed-to-correct documents. The head of the department didn’t come back either.
Everyone else seemed busy. There was no one with the time to take care of a newcomer. On the other hand, he didn’t think there was anything he could help with at the moment. He feared he might just get in the way.
His potential partner, ‘Honjou’, also hadn’t appeared. Someone would inform him once Honjou arrived. So the fact that no one had said anything likely meant Honjou wasn’t there yet.
Kouki had been patiently waiting at his desk for a while. But after thirty minutes, he became impatient and left the office.
He acted on a desire to quickly get a grasp of the workplace as a whole.
If no one would show him around, he’d explore on his own.
First, he went down to the first floor, explained the situation at the information counter, and asked to see the floor guide map.
According to it, the basement floor two = parking lot. Basement floor one = detention centre. First floor = lobby, information centre, community affairs section, traffic section. Second floor = detective section, security section, communication room, reference room, document delivery room. Third floor = director’s office, deputy director’s office, conference room, medical room. Fourth floor = public safety section, accounting section, police administration department, general affairs department, hearing room. Fifth floor = judo/kendo dojo, cafeteria—this was the layout.
“…I see.”
“Um…”
He looked up from the floor guide map at the sound of a voice. A young policewoman with a cute face and slightly moist large eyes was staring at him.
“If you don’t mind, I can show you around the station.”
If he were still a single Alpha back in the days, he would have eagerly said, “Please do.”
However, Kouki declined the offer with a polite “Thank you. But I’m fine.” She looked clearly disappointed. But he chose not to read the mood and walked away from the information counter.
For some reason, women had always been attracted to him. His father was apparently once a famous playboy. His two older brothers were also popular with women. So it might be a genetic trait of the Shutou family. People had even said that the men of the Shutou family emitted a special kind of pheromone even among Alphas.
Whether it was because of these special pheromones or not, the advances never stopped. He had relationships with many women, whether they were Alpha, Beta, or Omega. But since he wasn’t the one actively pursuing these relationships. He always lacked a strong attachment to any of them. And he often ended up getting together or breaking up over small things—this led to gossip magazines writing things like ‘The playboy third son of the Shutou family has a new girlfriend! This time, it’s a famous actress!’
However, once it was decided that he would enrol in the police academy, he decided to change his frivolous attitude. When he moved into the police academy dormitory, he completely cut ties with women.
Even now, after graduating from the police academy, he had no intention of resuming those relationships anytime soon.
After all, his childhood dream had finally come true.
He wanted to get used to his job as soon as possible and become a full-fledged detective. He didn’t have time to waste on romance.
The image of ‘that person’, who was still his hero, floated in his mind.
It was when he had just entered elementary school. Kouki was kidnapped for ransom.
He was bound hand and foot, gagged, and held captive in a room of the perpetrator’s apartment for three days. All he could do was curl up in the corner of the small, dark room, unable to stop trembling and crying.
The kidnapper, who was in his early twenties, seemed frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations and would occasionally shout things like “Don’t underestimate me!” and “How could you privileged people understand the suffering of someone scraping by at the bottom like me!”
“If I kill you, your family will suffer forever. Go to hell, you Alpha!”
When the bloodshot-eyed man screamed and aimed a knife at his throat, Kouki felt despaired. He thought that he would never see his family again.
Because he was trapped in this deep despair, he didn’t immediately understand what was happening when the door was suddenly kicked open and a lot of men rushed in.
“What the hell, you bastards!”
“We’re the police. You’re under arrest for kidnapping and unlawful confinement.”
“Damn it! Just die!”
The kidnapper started swinging the knife wildly.
The large man, who was at the front showing the arrest warrant, subdued the kidnapper after a struggle, disarmed him, and handcuffed him. After handing the arrested man over to what appeared to be a subordinate, he approached the trembling Kouki in the corner of the room.
“You’re Shutou Kouki, right?”
He asked in a gentle voice that didn’t match his large frame. Kouki nodded. The man knelt down, removed the gag, and untied his hands and feet. Even then, Kouki still couldn’t believe he was saved. So he remained tense. But the man said, “It’s okay now,” and hugged him.
Feeling the warmth of another person, tears began to flow naturally.
(Ah… I’m really okay now. I’m saved. I can go home. I can see my family… I can see everyone…)
“I was so scared… so scared…”
He cried loudly, clinging to the large body. The man patiently stroked his back until Kouki stopped crying.
He later found out that the man was a detective from a police station in downtown east. After safely reuniting with his family, his parents wanted to thank him personally. But he declined, saying, “I was just doing my duty.”
So he only met him once. His face was now unclear. He didn’t even know his name. When he became able to use a computer, he tried to search for him. But he couldn’t find any information about him.
However, the sense of security he provided was etched into Kouki’s memory. And even as he grew up, it never faded.
The admiration Kouki felt for him eventually transformed into a future dream.
One day, he wanted to become a detective just like ‘that person’.
He wanted to become a detective and save someone who, like his past self, was suffering and in despair.
He wanted to embrace them in his arms and say, “It’s okay now.”
Driven by that single thought, he had come this far.
(At last, I’ve made it this far…)
He touched the flower hall pin badge with his finger, savouring the emotions as he began to walk. Comparing it with the floor guide map he had just memorised, he started his rounds from the first floor, checking out the various departments. He also inspected the exits, emergency stairs, and restrooms.
After thoroughly checking out one floor, he would climb the stairs to the next floor and repeat the process until he reached the top.
(This must be the top floor.)
Standing in a dimly lit, empty space, he noticed a single door with frosted glass slightly elevated in front of him. A faint light leaked through the frosted glass. It was probably the door leading to the rooftop.
He climbed three steps and grasped the doorknob. It wasn’t locked.

*Translator’s Note: I kinda have a hunch that maybe this hero is related to our Uke, Honjou Amane somehow. But we’ll never know. We’ll see… -K
