Insects stirred as the earth awakened.

Otters were offered fish as sacrifices, wild geese arrived, and plants and trees began to bud.

Yao Jinxi and Wu Yang both loved spring. It was a gentle season with warm winds and light rain, where it seemed that something joyous was always about to happen.

So, they chose the day of ‘Jingzhe’ for their move. It was more than a year in the planning. Wu Yang pretended to consult the almanack, which suggested that today was auspicious for marriage, moving, and so on.

Thus, they decided on moving today.

The house’s renovation was based on a fresh green and warm goose-yellow colour scheme, creating a simple style. Yao Jinxi meticulously discussed and considered every detail with the designer. The furniture was carefully chosen together with Wu Yang. They thought that since they planned to live in this house for a long time, it would be better to take their time and get things right from the beginning. 

So, the renovation took almost half a year. Yao Jinxi also worried about any potentially irritating substances in the construction materials that might be harmful to Wu Yang’s health. Ventilation alone took up the remaining six months. At this point, both Yao Jinxi and Wu Yang were eager to move in.

With the help of a moving company and a few people brought by Fu Hongyu, the process became much easier. Xia Ruonan also came and brought explosive news.

She was pregnant.

Yao Jinxi and Wu Yang suddenly realised why Fu Hongyu was so full of joy and had just mentioned quitting smoking. However, with her pregnant for only two-months at the moment, though Xia Ruonan was there, no one dared to let her move around freely. So she could only watch from the sidelines.

“Has it only been a year for you guys?” Yao Jinxi looked at Xia Ruonan’s flat abdomen with extreme surprise. He was filled with respect for the ability of women to nurture life itself, “You’re already pregnant?”

“I have to give birth sooner or later anyway. It’s better to have the energy to mess around with the child sooner. In fact, we only found out yesterday. I noticed that my period hasn’t come, so just to be sure, I went for a checkup.” Xia Ruonan happily took out a red envelope. Although Wu Yang’s body appeared nearly normal, the cancer surgery had taken a toll on him. He had to be careful with his diet. Yao Jinxi watched him take medication more punctually than an alarm clock. At this moment, he brought a bag of Chinese medicine he had prepared in advance. In the restaurant, without waiting, he found a waiter to heat up the Chinese medicine and brought it over. He felt relieved watching Wu Yang drink it sip by sip.

Everyone was aware of Wu Yang’s condition. So they refrained from urging him to drink alcohol. Yao Jinxi, Wu Yang, and Xia Ruonan enjoyed their hot beverages while clinking glasses with others who were drinking white wine.

Fu Hongyu had brought along some eloquent companions. Soon, the dinner table became lively and bustling, filled with a different kind of warmth.

Half of the dishes on the table were spicy, so Yao Jinxi added a bowl of mountain mushroom chicken soup for Wu Yang and Xia Ruonan as he happily picked water-boiled pork slices for himself. For such a long period, he ate whatever Wu Yang ate. He was originally a person who loved spicy food. But he had refrained from chilli and most flavorful items for a while now, which was quite a challenge for him.

After just a couple of bites of the bright red pork slices, Yao Jinxi found them too spicy and quickly took Wu Yang’s bowl to drink several sips of soup. “It’s been so long since I had something spicy. I’m actually a bit unaccustomed now! What a tragedy!”

Wu Yang poured a cup of hot soy milk for him and said, “Eating spicy food is not good for your health. You’ve finally gotten used to the light taste, so consider it a healthy lifestyle.”

Yao Jinxi chewed on the tea tree mushroom that Wu Yang had picked for him, feeling a bit unhappy.

Wu Yang enjoyed the feeling of feeding Yao Jinxi and kept offering him different dishes. He suggested, “After moving, the tea shop is farther away from you so I can’t send you there every day. How about getting a driver’s licence and we can buy a car for you?”

Yao Jinxi looked displeased at the vegetables and carrots in his bowl. He felt like he was being fed like a rabbit. “Why buy a car? Learning to drive is such a hassle… I ride a bicycle every day. I’m living a low-carbon life and also exercising.”

“But I think learning to drive is a good idea. It’s a useful skill. I was actually thinking of having Ruonan learn to drive too,” Fu Hongyu interjected. “Besides, haven’t you and Wu Yang been planning to go on a road trip? Driving on the road together would be nice if you can switch drivers.”

Yao Jinxi hesitated, “Well, that’s true…”

Fu Hongyu had previously looked into driving schools for Xia Ruonan. Now, he recommended one to Yao Jinxi.

After a busy day, everyone was a bit tired. Moreover, there were two people with special health conditions. So no one suggested going to a bar to make more noise. After dinner, everyone went their separate ways.

Wu Yang brought Yao Jinxi back home. He sat down on the sofa, spreading his hands on the backrest as if enjoying the moment. When Yao Jinxi sat down beside him, Wu Yang naturally put his arm around his shoulder.

Yao Jinxi didn’t resist. Instead, he rested his head on his arm and asked, “Feeling tired?”

Wu Yang shook his head with his eyes closed. He smiled and said, “Stop treating me like I’m fragile. It’s been so long since I was sick.”

The five-year benchmark had not passed yet. Yao Jinxi always finds it hard to let go. It was like having a ticking time bomb buried in his life. If cancer were to recur, it would essentially be a death sentence for Wu Yang.

Wu Yang lazily turned his head. There was a smile playing on his lips. “Worrying about this and that. Even if it’s not this, there’s always something else to worry us. If we keep worrying, a person’s life will be full of problems.”

Leaning in for a kiss, Yao Jinxi chuckled at what he said. “You’ve got quite a good mindset.”

Both of them, covered in sweat, felt cool and comfortable under the air conditioning. When they huddled together, it was as if they were enveloped in each other’s masculine scent. It was warm and exhilarating.

After a deep kiss, Wu Yang finally opened his eyes. The desire in his gaze was evident. “I want to have sex.”

Yao Jinxi was kissed passionately by him. When he touched Wu Yang’s thigh with his hand, he felt Wu Yang’s erection. In fact, he himself also has an erection.

Yao Jinxi wanted to find the God of Dreams as soon as he got into bed. But then he felt Wu Yang start to kiss his neck. He warned in a daze, “Don’t indulge in desire… I’m tired. Let’s not do it anymore.”

“Okay, let’s not do it.” Wu Yang comforted him while kissing him. He then wrapped his hands around Yao Jinxi’s waist. After a while, he held Yao Jinxi’s hand as if it was not enough for him. He spread his fingers and clasped them together. Only then was he satisfied. He closed his eyes.

This is the first night in their new home. They will spend many days and nights here.

They had more time ahead of them to be spent together.

• Day of ‘Jingzhe’ = More often, it refers to the day when the Sun is exactly at a celestial longitude of 345°. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around March 5 and ends around March 20. The word 驚蟄 [Jingzhe] means the awakening of hibernating insects.
