Chapter 57.1
During the weekend morning video conference, the doorbell rang, and a local courier delivered a well-packaged box.
Lu Yao returned to the living room, unwrapped the package, and found it contained the latest AR glasses developed by the tech department, along with the accompanying control handle.
This was also the last item on the meeting agenda.
“All the function tests have been completed. At this stage, we need to collect some user feedback to check for any overlooked issues or areas needing improvement. Once everything is cleared, we can start selling them.”
“We have received nine feedback videos so far, and we’re missing one. The tech department suggests that Mr. Lu should personally test them…”
The screen suddenly shrank, limiting the view, leaving everyone in the meeting momentarily stunned.
The speaker’s comment was interrupted as he called out in confusion, “Mr. Lu?”
“Sorry, just a moment.”
Lu Yao briefly muted his microphone, took off his headphones, and tilted his head to rub the head resting on his shoulder. “Why are you up so early? Don’t you want to sleep a bit more?”
Yu Le, who was leaning over the sofa, yawned sleepily with a hoarse voice, “Early? It’s almost eleven.”
Lu Yao picked up a glass of water, held Yu Le’s chin to make him look up. “Have a drink to soothe your throat; otherwise, it’s hard to talk.”
“Just trying to be considerate after the fact.”
Yu Le took the glass, grumbling, “Why did you have to pick such a tricky spot… And why are you working on the weekend?”
Lu Yao explained, “I scheduled an extra video conference.”
“…”
Yu Le’s hand stopped mid-air as he drank, his face showing some distortion.
“You’re in a video conference???”
Lu Yao nodded and quickly added, “Don’t worry, I’ve paused it, and muted the mic.”
Yu Le’s mood took a roller coaster ride, and he quickly moved aside… though not very smoothly, as his legs, which had been propped up all night, were still sore.
Lu Yao smiled, reopened his computer, and put on his headphones.
The man who had been speaking continued from where he left off. Lu Yao listened while contemplating something, then turned to look at Yu Le, who had placed himself in a video blind spot and was casually examining the AR glasses.
Yu Le met his gaze, paused for two seconds, then quietly asked if the glasses should not be moved while trying to set them down.
“No, you can move them.”
Lu Yao answered and made a sincere invitation. “Le Le, would you help me with something?”
The meeting participants saw a young man in home attire with an outstanding appearance suddenly appear in the frame.
“……”
“……”
“……”
The screen’s reaction showed surprise and astonishment, as if they were caught off guard.
So… they’re not treating them as outsiders anymore?
Yu Le found the switch on the glasses and, under Lu Yao’s direction, turned them on. “Is this okay? Just put them on, right?”
“Mm-hmm.” Lu Yao nodded, picking up the control handle and holding the headphones with one hand, speaking to the people in the video. “Alright, start recording.”
“This person…”
Lu Yao replied, “Just address him as Mr. Yu.”
“Oh, alright.” The person on the other end promptly adjusted, “Is Mr. Yu going to participate in the test?”
Lu Yao said, “Yes, he’s testing on my behalf.”
Yu Le put on the glasses, and the scene before him transformed into a different view, surrounded by lush green forests and bamboo. The sky was clear, and a dragonfly flew by. He even reached out to catch it.
But he ended up grabbing a handful of fur and got licked.
“Son? Sorry, sorry.” He laughed and quickly apologized, rubbing the dog’s head. “My hand slipped.”
Lu Yao adjusted the view on the control handle.
Yu Le exclaimed, “Hmm? It’s snowing.”
Lu Yao asked, “How does it feel?”
“It looks great, very realistic.” Yu Le looked around. “Is this a virtual scene, or is it real-world footage?”
Lu Yao replied, “This is real footage. The earlier one was virtual.”
“Really? I thought the earlier one felt quite real too.” Yu Le continued to explore. “So what’s the use of this? Is it a travel simulator?”
Lu Yao responded, “That can be one of its functions.”
Yu Le asked, “What other functions does it have? By the way, can it play movies?”
Lu Yao pressed a few buttons and played a Star Wars movie.
“Wow, cool!”
The immersive feeling made Yu Le feel like he was really in space. It truly felt like an immersive viewing experience.
He reached out to blindly grab Lu Yao, about to say something, when suddenly he swayed to the right, bumping into Lu Yao, who then steadied him.
“Wow, that was close, old Lu.” He clung to Lu Yao, still shaken. “The spaceship almost hit me…”
Lu Yao couldn’t help but laugh, and others in the meeting also chuckled.
The boss’s family is so adorable.
“Not only can you watch movies, but you can also play games.”
Lu Yao adjusted the view and handed the control handle to Yu Le. “The four buttons on the left and right can be pressed freely.”
“Single-player mode?” Yu Le asked, clumsily shooting down a plane approaching his face.
Lu Yao looked at the computer, and someone immediately answered, “This version does not support wireless data networking yet, but the functionality is in development.”
Lu Yao added, “Do you want to use this for online games?”
“No.” Yu Le said, “If we could team up online, we could play together at home in the future.”
……
With Lu Yao’s help, Yu Le tried all the features. After spending so much time in the virtual world, he felt a bit disoriented when he took off the glasses and returned to reality.
But he remained enthusiastic and even wanted Cotton to try, but realized that Cotton’s eye spacing was not suitable and had to abandon the idea.
Lu Yao asked, “What are your impressions?”
Yu Le gave a thumbs-up. “It’s great.”
Lu Yao pressed down Yu Le’s thumb. “What’s not great?”
“Nothing, I think it’s all pretty great…” Yu Le thought for a moment. “Actually, I get a bit dizzy with 3D; it makes me a bit nauseous after a while. Does that count?”
“That counts.” Lu Yao helped smooth down a strand of hair that had gotten ruffled when Yu Le removed the glasses. “Alright, thank you for your hard work, let’s go have lunch.”
Yu Le called Cotton and headed out, “Come here, sweetheart, don’t disturb Dad’s work.”
When the dual-camera mode returned to single mode, the participants were a bit reluctant to say goodbye to the two cute additions.
Lu Yao took off the glasses and briefly pondered before addressing the people on the other end of the computer, “Consider adding an extra layer of soft padding at the bridge of the nose or adjusting the curvature for a better fit.”
The AR glasses were somewhat heavy, and Lu Yao had noticed that Yu Le had been uncomfortable due to the pressure on his nose, holding the glasses with his hand, which caused red marks after he took them off.
“Understood.” The person in charge took note of the request.
“Also,” Lu Yao placed the glasses back on the table, “please add the data networking feature as soon as possible.”
They discussed some additional features and future updates. At the end of the meeting, someone finally asked Lu Yao, “Mr. Lu, after the trial video is edited, we need to upload it to the official website for consumer reference. Regarding Mr. Yu’s…”
Lu Yao took a sip from his water cup. “Haven’t you already recorded everything? Just send it out.”
The person in charge replied, “Alright. Do we need to specially edit out your footage?”
Lu Yao said, “No need to trouble yourself.”
After closing the computer, Lu Yao pinched his slightly swollen nose and looked towards the dining table. “Le Le, do you have work this afternoon?”
“I need to visit Mr. Song’s studio.”
Yu Le was eating, with Cotton sitting on the stool beside him, watching with watery eyes, making Yu Le constantly stop to pet him. “What’s wrong?”
“I’ll go to the hospital this afternoon and can drop you off on the way.”
Lu Yao got up and went over to pick up Cotton. “It’s all fur, eat first and then play.”
Yu Le asked, “Are we going to visit Grandpa?”
Lu Yao nodded. “Mm-hmm.”
Yu Le asked, “What time?”
Lu Yao replied, “What time do you plan to leave?”
“Well, let’s say two o’clock. I’ll leave a bit earlier and go to the hospital with you.” Yu Le added, “By the way, do you have any spare phone chargers at home? Mine seems to be malfunctioning after being dropped.”
Lu Yao said, “There should be one on the shelf in your studio.”
Yu Le said, “……”
Yu Le got halfway up but sat back down, his gaze wandering. “Can you get it for me?”
Lu Yao raised an eyebrow.
Yu Le buried his head in his porridge, trying to act calm, but his exposed ears were slowly turning red.
No matter what, he had no intention of entering that room again for the time being.
