TCCRMMAICSTA Chapter 30

Filial Piety Comes with Power

Yu Wanwan smiled and asked, “Does it taste good?”

The Fifth Prince glared at her and immediately cursed, “You filthy slave, how dare you talk to this prince like that?”

Zhou Kang spoke with his mouth full, spitting food everywhere as he talked.

Yu Wanwan ignored his outburst and calmly said, “Eating everything will only harm you…”

Upon seeing Yu Wanwan’s expression, Xianfei immediately sensed something was wrong. Since Yu Wanwan now had leverage over her, she and her son couldn’t treat Yu Wanwan the way they used to. If they did, Yu Wanwan might lose it, and everyone would be doomed.

Yu Wanwan had just aimed a jab at her earlier, and now she was saying this—could it be that Yu Wanwan poisoned Kang’er?

Xianfei thought to herself, It’s over! Yu Wanwan isn’t Yu Zhongming’s biological daughter. He’s always treated her poorly and even sent her into the palace as a spy. Now that she knows Kang’er is Yu Zhongming’s real son, jealousy must have gotten the better of her. She’s capable of anything.

Immediately, Xianfei shouted at Nanny Ji, “What did you give Kang’er to eat?”

Nanny Ji hurriedly responded, “Your Highness, I checked everything thoroughly. There’s no poison. It’s just honey cakes.”

Huh? Xianfei was confused.

Yu Wanwan laughed and walked over to the table, taking the food box away. “Relax, it’s not poisoned. It’s just cakes made with fried bee corpses.”

“Tsk, tsk, tsk, all those bees popping in your mouth, crackling and snapping.”

At these words, Zhou Kang immediately gagged.

“Ugh… Ahhh! My stomach hurts! My mouth hurts! Everything hurts!”

“That filthy slave dared to make me eat bees! Mother! Kill him at once!”

Just moments ago, Zhou Kang had been enjoying the crisp honey cakes, but he hadn’t expected they were made from bees! Remembering the sting of a bee’s pain, he instantly felt like his stomach and mouth were being stung from the inside.

Xianfei furiously glared at Yu Wanwan, “You did this on purpose!”

Yu Wanwan innocently spread her hands, “I just left it on the table. I didn’t force him to eat it. Taking without asking is stealing.”

“Xianfei, if you don’t want to discipline your child, someone else will happily give him the lesson he needs.”

“And besides, what’s wrong with me teaching him a lesson? After all…” Yu Wanwan finished with a playful wink at Xianfei.

The meaning was clear—You get it. I’m his half-sister. It’s only natural that I discipline him.

Xianfei clenched her fists. She wanted so badly to tell Yu Wanwan that she wasn’t Yu Zhongming’s biological daughter and had no right to discipline Kang’er. But Yu Zhongming had strictly warned her never to reveal this to Yu Wanwan. If she knew, Yu Wanwan would certainly refuse to cooperate any further, or worse, go mad and start talking nonsense.

So in the end, Xianfei had to swallow her anger and even handed over a box of silver to Yu Wanwan.

“Take the silver. You know what you should say and what you shouldn’t.”

Yu Wanwan’s smile stretched wide, “Oh, don’t worry, Your Highness. This humble servant has eyes for silver, not a mouth for it.”

She happily took the silver and left Xianhe Palace. Watching this, Zhou Kang, who had always been spoiled, was so furious that he threw everything on the table at Xianfei.

“That filthy slave bullied me like that, and you didn’t punish him! Instead, you gave him silver! You’re just asking for it!”

“Why else would someone call you a cheap wench at night?”

“Zhou Kang!” Xianfei yelled his name in full.

Seven or eight years old may be a young and ignorant age, but he was still a royal child. If he kept speaking so recklessly, he would get them into serious trouble sooner or later.

It seemed she had been spoiling him too much.

“Why are you yelling? ‘Little slut, lie down for your big brother!’” Zhou Kang wasn’t the least bit afraid and continued parroting the words he’d heard Xianfei say when she was sneaking around with her lover.

Outside Xianhe Palace, Yu Wanwan, overhearing this, was laughing so hard she could barely keep her head up.

“Hahaha, I’m dying! Zhou Kang truly embodies the phrase ‘filial piety brings power!’”

“I seriously suspect that when Xianfei was faking the act of making him physically weak, she also broke his brain.”

“Xianfei planned everything meticulously, but she forgot to guard against her own stupid son!”

Yu Wanwan returned to the Office of Attendants and, for once, spent the entire day relaxing.

Today, the emperor hadn’t favoured any of his concubines, so there was no work to be done in the Office of Attendants. She leisurely sprawled out on a soft couch, utterly relaxed.

In her left hand was a cup of tea, and in her right, a crispy egg roll. Ever since she caused a scene in the imperial kitchen, her food rations had noticeably improved. She could even enjoy snacks and late-night treats now.

Alternating between sips of tea and bites of the egg roll, life was simply too good.

Tsk… She clicked her tongue with the satisfaction of an old official finishing his tea.

“This feeling—don’t even start talking about it—you really shouldn’t talk about it…”

“Although I didn’t do much today, little ol’ me sure worked hard. If I could watch a dance performance to unwind, that’d be even better.”

She silently pondered. Last time, the brothel performance had been wrecked by the Battle King. She needed to find a chance to arrange another one.

Just as she was thinking about how bored she was and looking for some fun, the sound of singing came from outside.

“When will the moon be bright and clear? Lifting my cup, I ask the heavens…”

The melodious and lilting voice echoed within the Office of Attendants, and Yu Wanwan’s eyes lit up instantly.

This voice was low, gentle, and magnetic—without a doubt, it was a male singer!

She charged toward the door in a stance straight out of Tarzan of the Apes: “Here I come, my little songbird~” ٩(๑>◡<๑)۶

When she opened the door, a pale and delicate little eunuch sat quietly in the courtyard, holding a leaf in his hand. Clearly, the song just now had come from his lips.

When he saw Yu Wanwan, a trace of panic flashed in his eyes, like a startled fawn.

“Greetings, Eunuch Yu. I… I didn’t know you were resting, I didn’t mean to disturb you, I…”

The more he spoke, the softer his voice became, looking like he was about to burst into tears.

Yu Wanwan waved her hand dismissively. “It’s fine. Were you the one singing just now? Perfect timing, I was bored. Sing a couple more tunes for me.”

As she spoke, she quietly sized up the little eunuch in front of her. His lips were red, his teeth white, and his skin even more delicate than hers—a woman.

His voice was soft and sweet, hard to distinguish whether male or female.

She thought to herself, 【No wonder men like these fragile green tea types. Even I can’t handle this weak little green arrow.】

【But… why have I never seen this eunuch in the Office of Attendants before?】

【Could it be that Xianfei sent him to spy on me?】

【Is he also another girl in disguise?】

Yu Wanwan pondered. Xianfei had wanted to plant someone by her side earlier today, but she had refused. And now, by nightfall, a new little eunuch had appeared.

Not only that, but he also perfectly matched her… “aesthetic tastes.” Apart from Xianfei, who else could it be?

However, Xianfei knew she was a woman, so why would she send a man to watch over her? Xianfei still wanted to place more people in the harem. One wasn’t enough, so naturally, she’d send someone else in.

Plus, with this little eunuch’s appearance, Yu Wanwan secretly guessed that he was a kindred spirit—just like her.

While her mind was wandering, the little eunuch lifted the leaf in his hand and began to play it like a flute.

The soothing music filled the air, and after a while, he started singing again.

Yu Wanwan closed her eyes, immersing herself in the melody. Even after the eunuch finished his song, she was still lost in the moment.

“Eunuch Yu, I’ve finished singing…” His voice brought her back to reality, and Yu Wanwan finally opened her eyes.

【Listening to your song today feels like I’ve been exiled and stricken with illness in Xunyang City.】

【I’m sick. That voice has melted my bones, I can’t even move.】

But when she opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was the little eunuch’s pale face and his big, shiny eyes.

The two were face-to-face—just one centimetre apart from touching lips!

T/N  “谪居卧病浔阳城” (zhé jū wò bìng xún yáng chéng) is a poetic reference. It’s an allusion to an ancient Chinese poem by Bai Juyi, “Pipa Xing” (琵琶行), where the poet reflects on being demoted and living in exile in Xunyang City while also suffering from illness.

So basically,  Yu Wanwan is so captivated by the eunuch’s singing, that she feels as if she’s struck down by illness and can’t move.
