After Zhang Zhang disappeared from Fu Yiting’s sight that day, Fu Yiting felt as if the whole world had collapsed.

 

He, Fu Yiting, had failed in his life, not only did he lose the white moonlight cockroach, and now even the Cinnabar cockroach had disappeared. [1]

朱砂螂 (Cinnabar Cockroach):

 

朱砂 (Cinnabar): Cinnabar is a bright red mineral often associated with beauty, value, and also sometimes danger or poison. It’s used metaphorically to suggest something valuable or striking.

 

Endless pain and regret entangled Fu Yiting’s heart, making it almost impossible for him to breathe.

 

Fu Yiting mobilised all available resources like crazy, and at the cost of huge financial resources and energy, launched a full-scale search operation for the city’s sewers.

 

However, no matter how hard he tried, Zhang Zhang seemed to have vanished without a trace.

 

Every time the search was fruitless, Fu Yiting felt more desperate.

 

During this time, Fu Yiting deeply reflected on the mistakes he had made.

 

He regretted it so much and realised that he should not have imprisoned Zhang Zhang, and he should not have killed the cockroach clan in order to keep her.

 

Everything he suffered now may be heaven’s punishment for him!

 

From then on, Fu Yiting would pray silently every day, praying that the heavens would let him see his little cockroach again.

 

He was willing to pay any price, even if it meant more suffering.

 

In order to alleviate his guilt, Fu Yiting made an amazing decision: he gave his luxurious villa to the cockroaches that invaded the Fu family.

 

Moreover, he publicly declared that these cockroaches were the “legitimate cockroaches” of the Fu family, and anyone who dared to harm them would be considered an enemy of the Fu family.

 

People talked about it and thought that Fu Yiting was crazy, but only he knew that doing so was just self-salvation.

 

That day, Fu Yiting went to the temple alone to pray as usual.

 

Along the way, he was full of thoughts, recalling all the unbearable experiences in the past, and his heart was full of regret and self-blame.

 

After a long journey, Fu Yiting finally came to the ancient and solemn temple. He walked into the temple with firm steps, knelt on his knees and began to pray devoutly.

 

Time passed minute by minute. From early morning to dusk and then to late night, Fu Yiting remained in a kneeling position without moving, as if he had forgotten everything around him.

 

The night gradually deepened, a bright moon hung high in the sky, shedding cold light, and the stars were dotted in the night sky like bright gems, flickering non-stop.

 

Fu Yiting unconsciously raised his head and looked at the starry sky, his eyes revealing endless sadness and longing.

 

Just then a breeze blew and blew off a few petals and fell in front of him.

 

Fu Yiting looked carefully and found that he had come to the begonia tree without knowing when.

 

He couldn’t help but fall into deep thought, recalling the good times with the little cockroach in the past, and Fu Yiting was filled with emotion for a while.

 

“If everything can start over again, if I have a chance to see the little cockroach again…” Fu Yiting murmured to himself.

 

However, the cruel reality told him that there are not so many ifs in the world, things that have happened are destined to be unchangeable, and the lost cockroach is difficult to find back.

 

Just as Fu Yiting was immersed in the painful memories, a meteor suddenly streaked across the sky.

 

Fu Yiting quickly clasped his hands together and silently made a sincere wish in his heart:

 

“For you, I am willing to become a cockroach.”

 

Then the world spun around and Fu Yiting’s eyes went dark.

 

Perhaps this wish contained Fu Yiting’s deep affection for Zhang Zhang, so he was blessed by the heavens.

 

When Fu Yiting opened his eyes again, he saw a familiar figure.

 

She said, “Are you awake? I am Zhang Zhang, and I saved you.”

[2]In the raw it has “yue”at the end of that sentence.  Before “Yue” was used to express distaste or disgust, similar to “yuck” in English in the previous chapters.

 

 However, in informal contexts, especially online, “yue” can also be used to express strong emotions or emphasis in a less literal way. It seems in this instance, “yue” is used to convey a feeling of finality or resignation.
