Goldfish’s Diary.
April 10, Year 281 of the Fengtian Era, early summer, the weather is hot.
Daddy taught me how to write a diary, but writing is so troublesome. There are still so many characters I don’t recognize. However, Daddy said that if I don’t know the characters, I can use pinyin. Pinyin is really useful; I wonder who invented it. I want to thank them.
Today, we took a little horse-drawn cart to move our luggage back to Grandpa’s house. On the cart, Sandan was caught sneaking a peek at a book by Daddy and Father. Sandan had hidden over thirty books in his bag. When Erdan helped me carry them, we nearly cried from exhaustion.
But Daddy and Father didn’t scold Sandan for secretly reading cultivation books; they even praised him for reading. Last time, when Sandan said he wanted to become a demon lord, everyone was shocked. Luckily, Father decided to personally teach him cultivation to prevent him from going astray.
Father said Sandan is very smart, but if smart people aren’t guided properly, they might end up as clever but bad people.
Sandan is a good kid. I believe he will never turn bad and will be even better than Erdan and me in the future.
Another thing, last night I had a very strange dream. I dreamt that Daddy and Father were wearing red clothes and kneeling on the ground, presenting something to Grandpa. Erdan, Sandan, and I were clapping while holding flowers nearby. Everyone seemed very happy, except Grandpa, who was secretly wiping away tears, and I saw him.
Later, many uncles, aunts, and little aunts came to Grandpa’s house, bringing delicious food for me.
I really hope this dream comes true soon. I was so excited when I woke up.
April 11
We’ve arrived at Grandpa’s house! It’s even hotter here than in Hidden Dragon Valley. We’re all sweating so much. I took a bath with Erdan and Sandan. They kept splashing me with water—those two little troublemakers. Luckily, I’m their big brother, so I can handle it. Hehe, I really love them.
April 12
Daddy and Father gave me a kite—a super huge one! Today is the happiest day for me!
April 15
I forgot to write the last two days. I’ll make sure to write every day from now on!
April 20
Oops, I forgot to write again. I’m such a dummy.
Today, Erdan and I went out to play and ran into a lady who looked just like the little aunt. As soon as she saw Erdan and me, she picked me up and hugged and showered me with kisses and hugs, saying how beautiful I am. She kept saying how cute we were—nineteen times, in fact! Hehe, am I really that cute?
The lady said she had been packing things at her old home when she accidentally stepped on something and slipped, hitting her head and seeing stars. When she woke up, she was here.
She spoke oddly and suddenly hugged and kissed me, which scared Erdan into thinking we’d run into a bad person trying to kidnap me.
But she’s really a good person. If she were bad, I would be able to sense it. Her aura is just like Daddy’s, so she must be a good person.
And sure enough, she knows our Daddy and even how many moles he has on his face!
Erdan and I have never seen them.
Bringing the lady home made Daddy and Uncle Shen very happy. Little aunt seemed quite surprised because the lady and my little aunt looked almost like the same person!
I tried to comfort Little Aunt, saying I had seen this before because Erdan and I look exactly alike.
It seemed like the little aunt wasn’t very comforted by that.
But soon enough, the lady and the little aunt started chatting about how to take care of their skin and ended up bonding over that.
When the lady met Father, she praised him as being more handsome than Dou. What is Dou? Is it something tasty?
April 21
Grandpa’s house is now decorated with red silk, and all the lanterns are covered with double happiness characters. Even when we go out to play, the streets and shops are full of these characters. I wonder what everyone in the city is celebrating.
I asked Erdan, who hit me on the head and said, “You silly brother (it would be nice if you just called me brother from now on), didn’t you hear anything when Daddy and Father were talking about something important in the main hall?”
I said sorry, I was too busy eating Daddy’s small ice cream to pay attention.
Erdan was so mad he laughed, “Daddy and Father are getting married in three days!”
I still didn’t get it. I thought Daddy and Father were already together.
Sandan came over and patiently explained.
He said, “There will be a big feast in three days.”
Then it all made sense.
Erdan really does speak in riddles; it’s hard to understand him.
April 22
The weather is really nice and cool. We have a lot of guests at home—Uncle Fang, Uncle Xiao, Uncle Shen, Sister Shen, the little aunt, and even the monk uncle we met before who was eating steamed buns…
Everyone had dinner together and chatted. Erdan, Sandan, and I sat on the eaves and listened to their stories after they got drunk.
They talked about how Daddy had suffered in the past and the hardships he faced after coming here. They also talked about how Father was bullied and shunned as a child and nearly died several times.
Erdan and I cried our eyes out on the eaves, and even Sandan had red eyes. It turns out Daddy and Father had such hard lives. It breaks my heart and makes me feel so sad. They are the best fathers in the world; why do they have to suffer so much?
If I could, I’d take all their future hardships away. I’m not afraid of suffering; a piece of candy would make it all better.
I love Daddy and Father forever, and I love our home. It’s the most wonderful place in the world.
I think Erdan feels the same way, and so does Sandan.
April 23
Today, we had a little rain. Erdan said it’s because Father is so nervous about the wedding tomorrow that his anxiety is affecting the weather.
Erdan also said that today we can’t stay at Grandpa’s house with Father. We need to go back to Rongyun Sect, ride in a luxurious carriage with an endless amount of money and various treasures, and then come all the way back to Grandpa’s house to accompany Father for the wedding.
The entire road from Rongyun Sect to Grandpa’s house was decorated with red lanterns, looking like a long red river.
Father is still very nervous. He kept pinching his head in the carriage and staring out the window, looking worried.
The weather has changed too.
I gave Father a hug to comfort him, saying, “Don’t worry, Father. Even if something goes wrong and we can’t marry Daddy tomorrow, we can always postpone it.”
Suddenly, the light rain turned into a downpour. What strange weather!
April 24
Today’s weather is exceptionally nice, the best we’ve had in days. It’s sunny, with a gentle breeze that feels great on the face. We left very early, even before it was light out. Though I was tired, I was excited thinking about the big feast ahead.
Father isn’t as nervous anymore. Last night, I overheard him secretly talking to Daddy through the sound transmission silver mirror, whispering and asking Daddy to comfort him.
Erdan always says I’m clingy to Daddy, but I think Father is the truly clingy one.
I don’t need Daddy to comfort me anymore at six. Hmph.
As the carriage left Rongyun Sect, all the disciples, brothers, and sisters crowded at the gate to see us off. I even saw the sect leader, Grandpa.
As we left the mountain gate and entered Shuoxia City, the sky was just starting to lighten. Along the way, many neighbors were holding lanterns, crowding the streets and alleys. Although it was crowded, they didn’t block our path and even made way for our carriage.
They smiled and tossed fruits into our carriage, offering blessings for Father and Daddy to have a lifelong bond and a thousand years of happiness. When I picked up the fruits, I saw they were longans, lotus seeds, and peanuts. They taste so good!
These people are truly kind. Is this a snack before the big feast? I’m so happy. I have a feeling today might be one of the happiest days of my life.
I can’t write anymore; we’re almost there.
I’ll write more tomorrow if I remember, hee hee.
Off to the big feast!
