RVC Chapter 18

Life Was Like A Big Dream, and Upon Waking, He Saw A Beautiful Woman

The old matron from Wei Xiangfu wanted to escape. However, just as she took a step forward, Hu Lu charged over from the side and stuck out his foot, causing the matron to fall to the ground.

This happened so suddenly that many people in the crowd were unable to react in time and only let out cries of surprise in their minds. Nevertheless, this was not what Zhao Lingyun had his attention on. The matron had fallen down by his feet, yet he didn’t even lower his gaze to glance at her. Even amidst the commotion, Master Zhao was watching Anyuan Houfu’s carriage.

When the carriage passed by in front of him just then, Zhao Lingyun looked inside it, while Jiang Mingyue looked out from inside the carriage. Seeing Zhao Lingyun, Jiang Mingyue’s lips pressed her lips into a smile. It sent Master Zhao into a daze immediately.

This was like one of those dreams where he saw countless beauties and experienced all sorts of joys and sorrows with them. Then he opened his eyes and woke up to find it was the beautiful woman before him who was truly the most beautiful woman in the world.

The smile that the Jiang family’s second daughter had earlier—that subtle smile that was capable of causing the downfall of a city—hooked onto Master Zhao’s soul just like that.

“What are you still looking outside for?” Old Madam Xu said angrily. She pushed down the carriage curtain that Jiang Mingyue had lifted open with a finger. “You don’t think things are in enough of a mess?”

Jiang Mingyue: “I just had a glance.”

“Who are you still wanting to look at?” Old Madam Xu said. She loosened and pulled off the thick cloth that was wrapped around Jiang Mingyue’s neck. “Just sit obediently and pray that Buddha will protect us from encountering any more incidents on our way home.”

“Don’t talk to me. I have a headache.” The old lady had Jiang Mingyue shut up.

The carriage was shaking and swaying. Jiang Mingyue sat leaning against a pillow for a while, then she tilted her body toward the old madam and snuggled into her arms. Old Madam Xu was initially annoyed and tried to push Jiang Mingyue away. However, after failing to do that, Old Madam Xu let out a heavy sigh. She placed a hand on her granddaughter’s head and patted it gently.

Nestled in Old Madam Xu’s embrace, Jiang Mingyue felt at peace as she shut her eyes. ‘It’s so nice to have Grandmother protecting me.

The angry expression on Old Madam Xu’s face faded away, replaced by a sad expression. Just what sort of man should she find for this granddaughter of hers? She had raised the young woman herself, so she knew clearly that Mingyue’er was not a virtuous person and had a short temper. Jiang Mingyue’s family could tolerate her throwing tantrums, but could her husband’s family do the same? If they didn’t find the right marriage partner for her, it wouldn’t be a union of families but rather the start of a feud.

The carriage jolted suddenly.

“Grandma,” Jiang Mingyue called out softly.

“Carry on sleeping.” Old Madam Xu hurriedly hugged Jiang Mingyue tightly.

It was an hour later that Shen Qi finally arrived at the marquis’ manor with Jiang Yue’e and her two brothers, Jiang Yu and Jiang Xian.

The butler, Wang Decai, ran out to greet them.

Without even waiting for him to come to a stop, Jiang Yue’e asked anxiously, “Where are Old Madam and Second Miss?”

“Old Madam had Second Miss return to her room,” Wang Decai replied hurriedly. “Old Madam Xu is currently sitting in the main hall.”

“Let’s go inside,” Shen Qi told Jiang Yue’e as he took a step forward.

His wife was pointlessly worried. Now that Old Madam Xu and Jiang Mingyue had returned home, what could possibly happen? Would the people from Wei Xiangfu dare come looking for them here?

After Jiang Yu and Jiang Xian stepped through the entrance of their home, they exchanged glances. Neither of them wanted to see their grandmother. Old Madam Xu had been busy dealing with outsiders earlier, so she hadn’t done anything to the two brothers. However, they suspected that there was a beating waiting for them right now.

“Don’t you even think of escaping,” Shen Qi said as he grabbed the collars of the two brothers from behind, one in each hand. “Come with me to see the Old Madam.”

“Eldest Miss’s husband,” Wang Decai said, moving closer, “Old Madam has instructed that she does not want to see the two young masters today and to let them find themselves a place to stay.”

“Oh!” Jiang Xian immediately grinned from ear to ear. Bumping against his head, which was so swollen it looked like a pig’s head, he said loudly, “Then I’ll go back to my room and sleep.”

“Do you not need to eat?” Jiang Yue’e asked bemusedly from behind.

“Then I’ll just go to the kitchen and look for something to eat,” Jiang Yu immediately decided. “Yu-ge’r, let’s go.”

Jiang Yue’e could only say to Wang Decai, “Make some food that they like to eat. They’re going to get a beating today.”

Wang Decai agreed to do so and then ran after the two young masters.

He felt that it had to be troubling for the Eldest Married Miss to have to say such a thing out loud. After all, who could tell from their miserable appearance that these two young masters were going to get another beating today?

The husband and wife, Shen Qi and Jiang Yue’e, entered the main hall where Old Madam Xu was sitting.

Without waiting for them to greet her, Old Madam Xu immediately pointed at the empty seats to her left and said, “Have a seat.”

Back when Shen Qi married Jiang Yue’e, Old Madam Xu told him not to bother with formal greetings, but Shen Qi persisted with the customary formal greetings. Nowadays, however, he just did whatever Old Madam Xu told him to do. In Anyuan Houfu, etiquette was second in importance to the old madam’s words.

“We’ve troubled you greatly today, Grandson-in-Law.” Old Madam Xu first expressed her thanks to Shen Qi.

“Not at all, Grandmother. It was the right thing to do,” Shen Qi said, rising halfway out of his chair to bow humbly.

“Grandma,” Jiang Yue’e said anxiously, “Master Zhao sent that old woman to an official, and she was then taken into the court of law. After getting tortured, she confessed that she’s a matron from Wei Xiangfu.

It was impossible for a matron to follow her manor’s young master into the Imperial College, so this matron had to be Wei Lanzhi’s servant.

“That little hussy that’s surnamed Wei—I could tell with one look that she’s not a good person,” Old Madam Xu cursed.

Jiang Yue’e was really surprised. Was that all her family’s old madam had to say?

“Oh, Yue’e,” Old Madam Xu turned to her eldest granddaughter and said worriedly, “Tell me, what sort of man should we find for your younger sister? Grandson-in-Law, help me think about this too.”

Shen Qi: ‘???

Old Madam, could you not be so casual about this? Since ancient times, no one had ever asked their son-in-law to get involved in his sister-in-law’s marriage. Old Madam, could you please snap out of it!
