TSTFTR Chapter 05

Opening the door, he saw a stranger, a woman. Yu Qiu was somewhat surprised. When he moved here, it was solely for finding a place to live, and he had nothing to do with anyone in the neighborhood. He had seen this person before; she seemed to live downstairs.

After the initial surprise, Yu Qiu smiled and asked, “Auntie, is there something you need?”

“Well, you see,” the woman furrowed her brow, “my son is about to take the college entrance exam. Can you please only play the piano during the day? Don’t play it in the middle of the night. It disrupts my son’s studying.”

Yu Qiu was taken aback and then glanced at the clock. He said, “But it’s only 7:30…”

“But my son is studying! He can’t focus with you playing the piano! Do you understand how important the college entrance exam is? Do you know if he fails, who he will blame? He will blame you!”

Yu Qiu’s hand, hanging by his side, clenched quietly.

He mustered a smile and said, “Alright, Auntie, I understand. I’m sorry for the disturbance. I will try not to play at night from now on.”

He closed the door.

Leaning against the door, Yu Qiu sighed.

For two days, Yu Qiu hadn’t written anything and had been resting at home. But inspirations seemed to come from everywhere, and he didn’t mind. These inspirations were like water gradually filling up a cup, and he felt the itch in his hand.

On the third day, Yu Qiu sat in front of the computer and, just like when he wrote his first book, typed the title.

——”Beyond the Light”

Although his mind was filled with many ideas, Yu Qiu still followed his usual practice of outlining his thoughts by hand in a notebook. The outline was written in messy characters that probably only he could decipher.

After tearing the paper off and crumpling it into a ball, Yu Qiu suddenly noticed that the trash can was already full.

He sighed and smiled helplessly. Standing up, he picked up a trash bag.

Outside, it was dusk, and the twilight cast a gentle glow.

The orange-red light was cut into rectangular shapes by the window frame and surrendered to the stairs, kissing the dust on top. Stepping on the light, the logo on his white sneakers reflected the glow.

Humming a song, Yu Qiu tossed the trash bag into the green bin.

Just as he was about to turn around and go back upstairs, a familiar voice came from behind.

“Yu Qiu?”

Yu Qiu turned back in surprise and saw him, smiling. “Xuan Yun?”

This time, Xuan Yun wasn’t wearing a mask, revealing his face. Yu Qiu figured his face wouldn’t be too bad, but he didn’t expect him to be this good-looking. There was a kind of confident charm to him, with bright peach blossom eyes, a small mole below his left eye, thin lips, and when he smiled, there were small dimples on his cheeks that looked adorable.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen you without a mask,” Yu Qiu smiled, “You look really good.”

Xuan Yun’s face suddenly turned red, “Why are you suddenly praising me?”

“Praise is just acknowledging the truth,” Yu Qiu said seriously, “I’m stating facts.”

Xuan Yun felt a bit embarrassed and touched his hair, “Are you going for a walk?”

“…Yes,” Yu Qiu said, “…Sure.”

“How about walking together?” Xuan Yun’s eyes brightened, “I find it boring to walk alone.”

Yu Qiu had just come down to throw the trash and hadn’t cleaned himself up properly. His hair was a bit messy, and he had thrown on some random clothes without caring much. He followed Xuan Yun, walking slowly beside him.

Xuan Yun smiled and said, “I’ve been here for quite some time, but I don’t know many people. I feel awkward to initiate conversations with others. You are the first person I’ve become a little familiar with.”

“I don’t know many people here either. Besides, I usually stay home all day. I find it quite comfortable being at home. My place is quite messy.”

“What do you do?” Xuan Yun asked.

“Uh,” Yu Qiu pondered, “I’m just a writer.”

“A writer?” Xuan Yun’s eyes widened, “That’s impressive! What have you written?”

Yu Qiu was about to say something but suddenly choked.
