SVRP Chapter 10

The ghost that breaks out

“Awake?”

Tang Zihang opened his eyes from the chaos to a warm and bright room. He hissed as he sat up in bed, noticing Ji Yun standing at the doorway holding a piece of chocolate, her pretty face filled with worry.

“Have some chocolate first. You looked pretty miserable getting drenched in the rain yesterday. The villa is quite dirty right now…”

She paused. “Qin Dongwan and Luo Shu are fine, they’re resting in their rooms too. You can wash your bowl after finishing your porridge or leave it for later to wash together at noon.”

“Wait!”

Even if he was slow-witted, Tang Zihang could catch the odd tone in Ji Yun’s voice. Besides, his memory from yesterday seemed to be cut off abruptly. He only remembered losing consciousness in the torrential rain, instinctively walking towards someone familiar before collapsing, but no one caught him.

The persistent smell of blood filled the room. He sat up and saw a patch of indescribable dark red coagulated at the doorway. Blood trails extended outward, leading to an unknown destination.

“Yesterday…”

“Yesterday you passed out, and Zuo Chu carried you back. The person following you was a disguised illusion and attacked after you fainted. Luckily, Luo Shu had everything, or it would have all been for nothing.”

Before she appeared, her voice echoed; the girl’s crisp voice was calm but faltered when she saw the bloodstain, showing lingering fear. The harrowing events of last night still haunted even Qin Dongwan, who was somewhat familiar with this scenario.

Reading about it was entirely different from experiencing it firsthand.

After a near-sleepless night, no one, except the unconscious Tang Zihang, had rested well. Qin Dongwan, having just bathed, still wore her princess outfit, making her wet, loose hair seem more out of place. She silently took a seat after Ji Yun walked away.

“Out of ten people, five are left: you, me, A Shu, Ji Yun, and Zuo Chu. The rest are dead,” she added coldly, “including the ghost.”

“The ghost is dead?”

The 50% survival rate shocked him, but the news of the ghost’s death grabbed his attention more. Tang Zihang, known for his low intellect in the original story, couldn’t hide a glimmer of joy on his frightened face, even clutching the bedsheet harder.

“If the ghost is dead, can we leave? What exactly happened yesterday, Dongwan, tell me?”

“Yesterday, yesterday—”

Her clear voice brought memories of last night’s bloody chaos rushing back.

The group returning from the hut was almost exhausted. The forest monster attacked Luo Shu, who, despite her delicate appearance, showed incredible combat skills. Even Zuo Chu didn’t need to intervene. Blood flew in the rain, and the human-like “monster” fell.

The journey ahead was still rough, with ghostly wails and illusions in the forest. Zuo Chu barely carried Tang Zihang while Ji Yun supported him. Qin Dongwan and Luo Shu led the group out after a while.

Unexpectedly, the castle’s bright lights had gone out. Heavy darkness fell like a cage, making escape impossible. The dimly visible castle outline grew more eerie.

“Stop.”

Qin Dongwan tugged Luo Shu’s hand, signaling caution. In the infinite death game, nighttime threats often surpassed daytime ones. Daylight revealed everything, making brute force viable, but nighttime exposed every move.

Enemies might hide in the shadows, waiting to strike fatally.

They stayed hidden in the bushes, their rapid breaths intermingling in the silent, summer night. The rustling leaves in the breeze heightened tension. Ji Yun, visibly nervous, tried to approach Qin Dongwan but was rebuffed, so she held onto Zuo Chu’s sleeve.

Eventually, lights turned on.

From Qin Dongwan’s angle, it seemed the kitchen lit up. Shadows moved back and forth, and soon, the sound of knives hitting a chopping board resonated, each thud unsettling.

Staying outside wasn’t wise. The wind brushing their necks felt like a gentle hand, a bad omen, as if invisible fingers lifted hair, causing goosebumps.

“Should we check inside? What is that person doing…”

Ji Yun’s hoarse voice hinted at sensitivity to the environment, even feeling suffocated. This sensation was not fear but a biological warning.

Air was being stolen bit by bit. If they didn’t enter, they might suffocate outside. The novice level’s hint was clear, and Luo Shu first moved forward, expressionless, with a sharp gleam in her eyes.

The tightly shut door was kicked open with a bang.

The thick smell of meat overwhelmed them, mixed with the sight of blood-soaked limbs leading to the kitchen. Blood grew thicker, and the furniture lay in disarray. A plain-faced girl in elaborate dress emerged, her vibrant smile contrasting with her dull eyes. Holding a spoon, she tapped it against the wall, her voice hoarse, her smile hiding madness:

“Just in time, want to try my… human meat feast?”

Survival instinct overtook fear as Luo Shu charged forward, and the instinct to attack shattered Qin Dongwan’s hesitation, prompting her to grip a knife and follow.

Seeing them approach, the girl smiled instead of panicking, retreating into the narrow kitchen for defense. As Qin Dongwan neared, she saw the horrifying sight she wished to forget.

Organs and intestines, blood-soaked flesh pieces were strewn about. A swollen head floated in a pot, but her excellent memory identified it as the man who eavesdropped on her and Luo Shu.

Limbs lay on tables or in blood, the striking red assaulting Qin Dongwan’s senses. Suddenly, a bloody wind hit her face, and she instinctively raised her hands.

Clang.

The knife was forcefully taken, the metallic clash ringing out. With nerves taut, Qin Dongwan barely opened her eyes to see Luo Shu standing before her, eyes sharp and determined.

“Just a novice level boss, is this all it’s got?”

As she spoke, the two clashed with the possessed girl’s strength, intelligence evident in the spirit. Angered by Luo Shu’s words, it controlled the girl to press down. The petite body wielded surprising strength, grabbing the girl’s wrist and performing a shoulder throw.

“Zuo Chu!”

Zuo Chu, still guarding Ji Yun, couldn’t assist. Remembering the girl was possessed, Qin Dongwan mustered courage, grabbing scissors to stab the vulnerable neck.

The blade sank into the vital artery, blood spurting, staining her wrist and face. The strong smell filled her nostrils, making Qin Dongwan’s hands weaken, the scissors clattering to the floor.

“So, Dongwan, you killed the ghost…?”

“Kill” was too heavy; Tang Zihang swallowed it back, looking oddly at Qin Dongwan. Freshly bathed, she smelled of shampoo but felt different. Though the possessed girl wasn’t human, stabbing her throat must’ve been hard.

Qin Dongwan’s long lashes lowered, feet shuffling on the ground, and she softly responded, “Mm.”

The sudden shock left her mind in turmoil, tangled and growing worse. But more pressing matters remained, and the ghost wouldn’t grant time for grief.

This event had appeared in the story, but now she experienced it. Pain from nails digging into skin grounded Qin Dongwan, her gaze firming on Tang Zihang.

“The castle’s danger won’t vanish with the ghost’s death. Remember, our goal is to survive three days and evade the nemesis. This is the third day; I’ve only encountered the nemesis once. The ghost acted first, drawing fire. Do you think that’s normal for a novice level? Find the identity cards and decode the nemesis’s identity.”

She left the room, feeling stifled, as if lacking oxygen. Outside was still filled with the foul, bloody air, dizzying wherever she went.

Watching her leave, Tang Zihang felt uneasy, lifting the blanket to get out of bed when a sudden shock hit his head.

Several random bloody handprints had appeared on his bed.
