[Cleared Levels] None, “Nursery Rhyme Requiem” is currently in progress.
“Reminder to player, this check consumes 2 points, you have 28 points remaining.”
After the subtitle appeared, and before she could continue thinking, the game system launched another bombshell:
“All players have arrived, and this beginner level is now open. A reminder: each character must evade assassination attempts from their nemesis within three days, please identify your enemy yourself. Additionally, among you, there is a ghost hidden in someone’s body. As a special for the beginner level, we are providing one hint: abnormal actions indicate suspicion.
You are free to explore the castle for three days. As soon as you trigger key storylines with your own items, you will find ways to either eliminate your nemesis or kill the possessing ghost. Additionally, remember that finding the ghost is a condition for passing the level.
If a player possessed by a ghost kills the ghost, it also counts. Please return to your rooms and wait for NPCs to assign tasks. Enjoy the game.”
The system repeated itself twice as usual, while Qin Dongwan’s mind had already started wandering.
Across from her stood a girl in a princess dress, with a straight nose, red lips, an oval face, skin as smooth as jade, and a cool, elegant demeanor. Her features were impeccable. Beneath her right eye was a tiny tear mole, adding a touch of earthly beauty to her ethereal appearance.
This impressive figure was the heroine Ji Yun, the one with the biggest “golden finger,” countless handsome men in her harem, who ultimately reunited with the male lead after overcoming all obstacles.
Qin Dongwan remembered how, in the novel, the original character who liked the male lead opposed the heroine, only to end up getting shot by the heroine after many cringe-worthy actions. Her mood soured. After the system announcement repeated thrice, the castle lights returned to their original brightness, causing slight discomfort to her eyes.
The cleaned staircase stretched towards the second floor, covered with red carpet. Despite the European-style castle architecture, Qin Dongwan keenly detected an unexpected smell of disinfectant. Suspicion grew like particles in the air, filling her heart.
Things were getting more unusual.
“By the way, you said the rooms are allocated, so only two are left for me and her?”
Seeing no one speaking, Qin Dongwan broke the silence. Tang Zihang, still dazed by the system’s words, snapped out of it at her reminder:
“The rooms… are already allocated, only two left. Looks like you two girls will have to make do together.”
Qin Dongwan glanced instinctively at Luo Shu.
In the original book, the only one more dangerous than the invincible heroine was this major villain, Miss Luo Shu. While Ji Yun had reasons for her actions, Luo Shu, as a villain, had none. She would ruthlessly attack anyone she disliked.
Qin Dongwan had read only the first level in detail, then focused on Luo Shu’s scenes, skipping to the ending. If Ji Yun’s growth relied on men or her own golden finger, Luo Shu’s was purely from her own strength. Ruthless and cruel, Luo Shu’s harmless appearance was a great advantage for her.
Though she looked innocent with big, bright eyes like wine-filled goblets, she was a black-bellied, cute yet fierce character, loved by fans for her contrast.
However, the line between the fictional and the real was clear. Though Luo Shu was her favorite character in the novel, living with her in real life was too dangerous for Qin Dongwan, who even considered fleeing.
This scenario wasn’t in the original book, making her suspect that her arrival had changed some settings.
As Qin Dongwan asked, others also seemed to come to their senses, heading towards the second-floor accommodations. Luo Shu, apparently unhappy with sharing a room, glanced at Qin Dongwan with a displeased look.
Qin Dongwan, eager to survive, quickly promised: “Ashu, don’t worry, I won’t kick the quilt or move around, I won’t cross the line.”
Tang Zihang interjected: “Oh, you girls worry too much. Dongwan, you wouldn’t want me to squeeze into a room with someone else, right? What if a strong man kills me at night?”
Luo Shu’s long, thick eyelashes fluttered up, her bright eyes flashed, and she coldly retorted: “If you touch me, your hand will be hung on the door tomorrow.”
… Qin Dongwan felt a chill in her hands and hid them behind her. Though this petite girl didn’t seem threatening, as a former fan, she knew Luo Shu had the capability.
Should she tie her hands up before sleeping to avoid real trouble?
The hall, sparsely populated, soon left only the three of them. Luo Shu, in her five-centimeter heels, led the way, Qin Dongwan followed, again catching the strong smell of disinfectant she disliked.
After all preparations and checking the room, it was late. The weather outside the castle was unpredictable, but few cared why.
The sound of water came from the bathroom, and mist filled the small room, half-concealing the tall figure behind the glass door.
As if to prove her innocence, Luo Shu quickly turned her head away, looking out at the dark night.
Occasional flickers of light through the darkness revealed “ghostly hands.” The tree trunks outside, battered by time, had lost all green, leaving only thin, bare branches reaching skyward, eerily.
But Luo Shu, having survived many rounds in this death game, was unfazed by such sinister scenes or supernatural events. Others might not have such composure.
The bathroom seemed luxurious but lacked even basic soap, to Qin Dongwan’s frustration. Not being a clean freak, she quickly showered and changed into the silk pajamas provided. Wiping the steam off the mirror revealed her delicate oval face.
Her features were pleasant, with high cheekbones, well-shaped brows, almond eyes, and slightly curly brown hair. The silk pajamas fit snugly, showing her slender figure. The only accessory she wore was a heart-shaped necklace, even during her shower.
The girl in the mirror looked exactly like her, down to the scratch on the necklace, Qin Dongwan frowned, touching it in puzzlement.
It was indeed hers.
Each player’s room had a rules card with tips about their nemesis. Over the next few days, they had to find the hidden ghost and kill their nemesis. Qin Dongwan’s character was a fallen princess killed by her evil sister. She recalled and mimed a gesture, seeing her fist in the mirror.
She closed her palm, and the girl in the mirror followed. Through the mist, her palm’s lines appeared blurred.
Sweat started to bead on her forehead.
Had she just made a scissors or stone gesture?
…
The mirror’s surface rippled like water, clearing to reveal another woman’s striking features.
Though smiling, the woman’s eyes were cold, lips dripping a blood-red liquid. As her body formed, a sharp light shot from the mirror.
The sound of shattering glass reached her ears as a bloody hand thrust out!
Fear froze Qin Dongwan, seeing the sinews and raw flesh of the arm, its sharp claws aimed at her head.
“Dodge!”
A girl’s urgent voice broke her trance. Qin Dongwan, thanks to her yoga flexibility, bent back just in time to avoid the attack.
Luo Shu, already at the bathroom door, looked excited as she charged. Using a broken mirror piece, she stabbed the hand, eliciting a shriek as blood gushed, covering the table, filling the air with a stifling smell.
The hand withdrew, the Snow White image in the mirror vanished, leaving two different expressions reflected.
Qin Dongwan glanced at Luo Shu’s proud profile, her heart skipping a beat before she collected herself.
“Thanks.”
As soon as she spoke, her system chimed in, frustrated: “Wrong! Gratitude shouldn’t be so weak. You should pledge your life to her for saving you!”
“Get lost! Why didn’t you warn me about the mirror earlier—”
Regardless of her beauty, Qin Dongwan was wary of Luo Shu’s unexpected help, knowing her ruthless nature from the novel. The ghost’s quick appearance still made her uneasy.
The system lamented: “A villain helped you, and you suspect her motives. Aren’t you touched?”
Before she could reply, Luo Shu’s face darkened, her knife gleaming as she aimed at Qin Dongwan’s head!
