VFMESR Chapter 60

At first, Jiang Ling ignored the malicious private messages from strangers. However, due to the ongoing points match, he couldn’t help but frequently check the backend. So, every time he saw a freshly brewed red message, it was a bit annoying.

He could pretty much figure out the intentions of the other party just from the content of the private messages. Maybe it’s because it was in a novel, or perhaps he’s just been lucky in real life and hasn’t encountered such people.

Since the list of participants for the meet-up was partially disclosed, many people indeed had some comments about it. However, they usually only anonymously vented their frustrations on the forum, as they highly valued their own reputations.

[So, the invited guests for the meet-up aren’t chosen based on performance, huh?]

[My points, which are twenty times higher than his, seem like a joke, haha.]

[Don’t talk to me about strength. How can participating in a few competitions prove that he’s stronger than other uninvited gods?]

[Tsk tsk, he’s the Purple Star, we can’t compare.]

Everyone wants a chance to become famous, and Jiang Ling’s presence provides an outlet for most people to vent because his various stats seem the closest to them.

Jiang Ling had read many such comments but didn’t care. After all, words like these were nothing new to him.

However, Ji Kai was the first to openly question him through private messages.

Jiang Ling, feeling disturbed, eventually replied, [This is the official stance; if you have questions, ask the website.]

[Official invitation gives you the confidence to participate? Aren’t you afraid of being laughed off?] Ji Kai was indeed envious.

He was originally a popular candidate within the organization, even though only a partial list was revealed, competing with other experts for the remaining slots made his chances slim.

[Whether to participate is my right; please show some respect.] Jiang Ling’s expression turned cold, and he promptly blocked Ji Kai.

After finishing his daily PK battles, Jiang Ling logged off. Now the Warwick team was facing difficulties in qualifying for the second round, which meant he needed to accumulate more points every day.

Chu Wenyu had been excited for a long time because Jiang Ling agreed to accompany him, seeing it as a taste of slowly loosening his restrictions on alpha. Therefore, Chu Wenyu did not break his promise to release Lien and kept his word. If not for restraining Jiang Ling, he wouldn’t want to leave such a trouble in Burke Star.

In truth, Chu Wenyu was somewhat inclined to believe Jiang Ling’s statement that he had nothing to do with Lien. Staring at Lien’s profile picture, he couldn’t discern any special charm – just an ordinary, even somewhat timid alpha with no notable attractiveness.

But if Lien had looked a bit more attractive, Chu Wenyu wouldn’t have been so easily appeased.

The dark red birthmark became somewhat pleasing to the eye as Chu Wenyu’s mood improved, but no matter how you looked at it, he didn’t seem qualified to judge someone else’s appearance.

He had considered whether alpha didn’t like good-looking people, but the more he thought about it, the less likely it seemed. As for why he didn’t mind Lien’s appearance, perhaps it was because he liked him?

Chu Wenyu always had ill feelings towards those who might have ambiguous connections with alpha. However, this time, at least, he didn’t secretly harm Lien. In fact, to make Jiang Ling feel more favorably towards him, Chu Wenyu went to him after issuing the command to send Lien back to his original galaxy, looking somewhat pleased as he spoke about it.

“Jiang Ling, I’ve just ordered to release Lien. Now, you don’t have to worry about him anymore.” Chu Wenyu lifted his head, glancing at the alpha, with a hint of wanting praise in his expression. However, thinking about how the alpha treated him that way even when they were intimate, Chu Wenyu felt a pang of sadness in his heart.

His memory was excellent, and he would never forget that incident. But if Jiang Ling could avoid making him angry in the future, he could let it go.

After Chu Wenyu’s reminder, Jiang Ling remembered Lien. Indeed, he had treated Lien like a tool, but it was better that Chu Wenyu released him early, saving him from lingering guilt.

“Did you really release him?” Jiang Ling didn’t want to doubt, but considering Chu Wenyu’s history of breaking promises, he subconsciously sought confirmation.

Jiang Ling raised his eyebrows as he asked, causing Chu Wenyu, who had been feeling somewhat proud, to instantly feel a chill.

His expression tightened, losing its previous ease and becoming tense and serious. “You don’t believe me?” Chu Wenyu furrowed his brow tightly, speaking slowly with a deep, heavy tone.

Feeling frustrated, Chu Wenyu kept a stoic face and said, “Then I’ll have him contact you directly.”

Perhaps because he was genuinely misunderstood this time and felt sulky, Chu Wenyu completely ignored Jiang Ling and directly ordered the palace attendant stationed outside to contact the highest warden in the prison.

Being a prison warden wasn’t a prestigious job, so even high-ranking officials rarely received calls from the palace.

Seeing the caller’s location, he immediately pressed the answer button, swiftly reviewing his recent work in his mind for any lapses.

The more he thought about it, the more confident he became. No major criminals, no prison escapes…

“Let Lien talk to me.” Chu Wenyu, with a disdainful snort, reluctantly handed the communicator to Jiang Ling, growing angrier and more aggrieved the more he thought about it.

He had personally released someone connected to the alpha; even normal people wouldn’t act this generously, right? Jiang Ling dared to doubt him.

Caught off guard by Chu Wenyu’s actions, Jiang Ling received the communicator as noisy signals filled the airwaves shortly after. It seemed like the warden was hastily trying to contact Lien.

Lien, unexpectedly receiving the order for release, was bewildered at first but then felt a hint of joy. Over these days, aside from the initial panic when taken aboard the warship, he hadn’t suffered any mistreatment. So, Lien wasn’t too alarmed.

He was in the midst of packing, preparing to leave the prison under the guidance of the officer. Suddenly, he was stopped, fearing they had changed their minds about releasing him.

To his surprise, he was informed that the monarch of Burke Star wanted to talk to him.

Lien immediately thought of Jiang Ling. In his speculation, the reason he was brought to Burke Star might be related to Jiang Ling. However, he didn’t know the nature of their relationship and whether it was as he suspected.

“What are you looking at me for? Oh, I see. You don’t want me to hear your conversation with him, right?” Chu Wenyu, biting his lower lip, grew increasingly unpleasant. He held his breath, feeling uncomfortable.

No matter what he did, would Jiang Ling’s attitude toward him never improve?

“Your Majesty, that’s not what I meant.” Holding the communicator, Jiang Ling couldn’t hang up immediately.

“Then what do you mean?” Chu Wenyu disliked being misunderstood by the alpha. Though he had indeed done things in the past that upset Jiang Ling, this time it was clearly a misunderstanding.

“Even if I leave, you still don’t trust me, right?” Chu Wenyu suddenly thought of something, self-mockingly smiling. “Or are you worried I installed surveillance in the room?”

Feeling a bit helpless, Chu Wenyu covered his face. He actually wanted to let Jiang Ling’s suspicions come true. He didn’t want to let Lien go again, and this way, Jiang Ling wouldn’t misunderstand him.

However, he lowered his head, turned away, and spoke in a hoarse voice, “If you don’t trust me, you can go out and talk. I won’t eavesdrop on your conversation. You can say whatever you want to him.”

Chu Wenyu felt like he was in deep trouble. He was now allowing Jiang Ling to flirt openly with other people, even agreeing not to disturb them.

However, Jiang Ling remained still. He listened as the familiar voice of Lien came through the communicator, asking if there was anything the monarch needed. Being the first time to converse with the monarch of a nation, especially one with a fearsome reputation, Lien felt uneasy.

Soon, though, he relaxed because on the other end of the line was not a stranger but Jiang Ling.

“Apologies for leaving a bad impression on your first visit to Burke Star,” Jiang Ling politely spoke, while his peripheral vision observed the visibly angry Chu Wenyu not far away. Though appearing furious, Chu Wenyu’s ears twitched, clearly still paying attention to the conversation—truly saying one thing but meaning another.

Thinking about the prison’s food and accommodation over these days, Lien said with a hint of insincerity, “Actually, it’s been quite nice. But what about you? I didn’t expect you to be the person the monarch was looking for. Do you still have a chance to escape?”

His tone was very arrogant, having never thought the majesty he was talking about was not far away.

With the mention of the word ‘escape,’ Chu Wenyu’s fingers mechanically tugged at the corners of his clothes, almost all his attention focused on Jiang Ling’s upcoming response.

“I won’t. This is my home. Why would I want to escape?” Jiang Ling was actually speaking to Chu Wenyu. He wanted to ease the tension, to let him relax.

If only Chu Wenyu would turn around and look at Jiang Ling’s expression, he would see a look of relief and approval in those eyes.

The monarch did well this time.

Lien was confused, but Jiang Ling didn’t intend to say much more to him.

“Wishing you smooth sailing,” Jiang Ling was always concise with his words. He only reserved those sweet or hurtful phrases for Chu Wenyu, the person he loved and sometimes found infuriating. All of himself, he saved for his closest person.

“Brother, until we meet again,” Li En’s heart was also eager to return. As long as people were fine, nothing else mattered. He never expected that someone like Jiang Ling, who appeared cold and indifferent, could handle a person like Chu Wenyu.

Lien hung up, setting out on his journey, and Jiang Ling casually placed the communicator on the table.

Their conversation was perfectly normal, devoid of any intimate words. There were no affectionate words as Chu Wenyu had imagined. It was just like a conversation between ordinary friends.

Saying he would leave but not moving, Chu Wenyu remained frozen in place until he felt enveloped in a warm breath. Someone leaned their head on his shoulder; the short hair was a bit prickly. Then, Jiang Ling whispered softly, “Your Majesty, I misunderstood you… Chu Chu did well this time. I’m happy.”

In that instant, Chu Wenyu’s mind went blank, as if fireworks were exploding inside his head. It was the first time Jiang Ling, not addressing him as the monarch but using an intimate and gentle nickname, had ever spoken like this.

Honestly, it didn’t suit him at all, but he liked it very much.
