TSBFL Chapter 72:
Chapter 72.2: 衙门里
[In Yamen]
When Gu Lang walked into Yamen, he saw at one glance the county magistrate sitting on top of the courtroom and Private Adviser Xu beside him, as well as the Yamen attendants standing on both sides. He walked forward and bowed slightly towards the people above him, considered as a greeting.
That county magistrate looked at his movements, and in turn looked like he was startled, saying with a little uneasiness on his face, “Why do you need to be like this? Quickly get up.”
Gu Lang raised his head conveniently, looking towards the fidgety (feel uneasy whether sitting or standing) county magistrate above him, his voice was calm and steady, with a bit of irresistible flavor: “This citizen came like this, for the matter of our shop being slandered, saying that our shop is harming people. This citizen dares, can you let me see that corpse, as well as that victim’s family?”
“This…” Even though the county magistrate vaguely guessed the origin of the person in front of him, he could not help but frown when he heard his request at this time, and his face showed how he found things difficult.
Seeing his hesitant face but not in a hurry to deny it, Gu Lang gently lowered his eyelashes and continued, “With only that family member’s one-sided statement, how can you convict our restaurant? If I could meet that family member and confront them face to face, wouldn’t it be easier for the truth to reveal?”
When Xu Shi Ye ( Private Adviser Xu) heard his words, he looked somewhat hesitant at the county magistrate above him, and saw the county magistrate slapping the table and responding righteously, “What you said it’s reasonable, so naturally it’s like that.”
Private Adviser Xu silently shut his mouth.
Wait until their group arrived at the side room of Yamen office and saw the corpse parked there, as well as the family members who kept crying and wailing beside the corpse. All people in the official government revealed ‘can’t bear it’ looks, and only Gu Lang’s look hadn’t changed from the beginning.
Gu Lang first observed the situation in this room, then looked at the victim’s family members who were crying as if they were going to pass out, and finally put his gaze toward the corpse lying on the ground, and then without the slightest hesitation, he walked forward and pulled away the white cloth covering the corpse.
Underneath the white cloth was a corpse that had already changed a bit, and at this time, its appearance didn’t look so good, and even because of Gu Lang these actions, the smell that had originally covered, now it was emitted, and the people present were terribly suffocated.
Everyone covered their noses and almost vomited, only Gu Lang was still standing there without changing his face, remaining calm, as if he didn’t smell or see anything.
“What are you doing?! Do you want him to die without peace?” A sharp female voice rang out, breaking the still peaceful atmosphere.
Gu Lang turned his head to look at the married woman, looking to be in her early thirties, about the same age as the man lying down. They should be a husband and wife relationship. He had a judgment in his heart but didn’t voice it, instead, he reconfirmed, “What is your relationship with this man?”
The woman looked furious, but facing this ‘as cold as ice’ man in front of her, as well as the many official lords standing at the doorway, she didn’t dare to act recklessly, she could only endure the anger in her heart and replied, “He is my husband.”
Gu Lang looked at this person on the ground, her cheeks were thinny, her face was lean and haggard, although alive, she didn’t look like she was very healthy, so he continued, “How did your man die?”
The anger on the woman’s face froze because of his sentence, then she looked in the direction of the man, with a few wary looks on her face, as if she was speaking to herself, but also as if she was speaking to an onlooker, she blurted out, “It was poisoned to death by that Surname Chen’s small restaurant!”
Gu Lang finished observing the corpse on the ground and had a few judgments in his heart, then looked at the standing woman and said with ‘like a smile yet not a smile’, “Oh, really? Are you really sure that your husband died because of poison, and didn’t die of an illness?”
The woman’s heart thumped, looking at the man in front of her who didn’t look like an ordinary person but also didn’t wear official clothes. A few moments of weakness first surfaced on her face, then as if she thought of something, she suddenly sat down on the floor and cried out, shout out on the top of her voice and yelling loudly:
“The family Head, did you see it? ! My life is so bitter ah! You left us orphans and widows like this, how can we live in the future ah! You’ve left us here screaming for our lives, and even the Great Lord of Heaven won’t answer our prayer. Why are we still alive? We can’t even get justice from ‘just and incorruptible officials’! They’re all bullying us orphans and widows!”
