Perhaps it was.

Ruan Jiujiu imagined them having a child, with Cheng Jun sneaking out in the middle of the night to buy snacks while taking care of the baby, and her hand itched to punch someone.

Cheng Jun pushed open the door and saw Ruan Jiujiu inexplicably glaring at him, shoving the fried chicken into his arms.

“Have your fried chicken.”

Cheng Jun: “?”

How could he know that Ruan Jiujiu had just imagined future scenarios of him as a father, which made her suddenly annoyed.

Cheng Jun opened the bag, poked around inside, then turned his face to ask slowly, “Where’s the soda?”

“Ah, I forgot.”

Ruan Jiujiu sat in the bedroom, removing her makeup. “Check the fridge; there should be soda in there. But don’t drink too much.”

Following her instructions, Cheng Jun went to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and found a row of Yakult bottles, a few cartons of milk, and a couple of bottles of beer.

He suddenly remembered that the last time they ordered takeout, the restaurant had mistakenly sent several cans of beer instead of bottled Sprite. The beer had been sitting lonely in the fridge ever since.

With no soda in sight, Cheng Jun sifted through the contents of the fridge, confirming that he had only two choices—beer or Yakult.

…Or he could simply not drink anything.

After some contemplation, Cheng Jun took out two cans of beer.

He rarely drank alcohol, but he had a decent tolerance and had never been drunk. Drinking one or two cans of beer instead of a soft drink like Sprite should be fine.

Ruan Jiujiu walked out of the room after completing her makeup, and Cheng Jun was sitting on the living room sofa, enjoying the fried chicken.

“Huh, why are you drinking beer?”

“The fridge has no soda.”

“Oh…”

“Do you want some?”

Ruan Jiujiu shook her head. “No, I’m really full.”

She sat next to Cheng Jun, legs crossed, playing with her phone. When Cheng Jun drank the cold beer, his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and Ruan Jiujiu’s attention couldn’t help but follow.

She could already imagine the cold liquid rolling down her esophagus, and the sensation must be delightful.

To be precise, Ruan Jiujiu was feeling a bit tempted.

She glanced at Cheng Jun a few times in a row, and Cheng Jun caught her gaze. “Are you hungry?”

“Not really,” Ruan Jiujiu sat up straight, leaning towards him. “Is beer tasty?”

Cheng Jun could still recall her wild antics when she got drunk. “You shouldn’t drink.”

“Just a few sips. Don’t worry; I won’t go crazy. After drinking, I’ll go back to my room and sleep.”

At this moment, Ruan Jiujiu had forgotten her earlier thoughts about whether Cheng Jun was like other men.

Tomorrow was a day off work, and drinking beer would likely lead to a slightly swollen face in the morning. However, she had decided to spend the day at home, so she didn’t need to worry about puffiness.

Ruan Jiujiu looked clearly tempted. “I’ll just take a sip.”

Cheng Jun remembered her previous drunken behavior.

His gaze wandered, seemingly recalling certain memories. This time, instead of refusing, he asked, “Do you want me to open a new bottle?”

“No need, I’ll have a sip of yours.”

“Alright.”

The touch of the ice-cold beer bottle against her skin made Ruan Jiujiu shiver involuntarily. She took a big gulp, feeling incredibly refreshed. Unable to resist, she took two more sips before handing it back to Cheng Jun.

“Finished! Here you go.”

Cheng Jun took the beer bottle, as if still feeling the warmth of Ruan Jiujiu’s lips.

Ruan Jiujiu lay back on the sofa, feeling content, playing with her phone. Cheng Jun had finished his fried chicken and cleaned up the battlefield.

As he walked through the living room, he glanced at Ruan Jiujiu. She appeared completely calm, showing no signs of being intoxicated.

“…” Boss Cheng didn’t quite know what he was disappointed about.

The night had grown late, and Cheng Jun disposed of the kitchen waste. He walked over to Ruan Jiujiu and said, “I’m going to bed. Goodnight.”

Ruan Jiujiu half-closed her eyes, not responding.

Cheng Jun spoke gently, “Don’t sleep here; you might catch a cold.”

In response to Cheng Jun’s reminder, Ruan Jiujiu seemed a bit irritated, furrowing her brow and lightly massaging her forehead with her fingertips.

The night’s light bathed her, making her fair skin even more radiant, like flawless white jade. When she raised her elbow, the loose sleeve slipped down halfway, revealing her slender arm.

She licked her lips and lazily asked, “Then, will you carry me back?”

Cheng Jun: “?”

Ruan Jiujiu opened her eyes and, with a seductive smile in her peach blossom eyes, full of allure, said, “Big Brother Jun…”

He instantly lost his words.

Apparently, the term “one-drink wonder” applied to someone like Ruan Jiujiu. Unfortunately, she was also oblivious to her own alcohol tolerance.

As if boneless, Ruan Jiujiu waved at him, her eyes half-closed, and she smiled playfully. “Piggy Brother, carry me.”

Cheng Jun: “…”

In an instant, the scene shifted from ambiguous to something like Zhu Bajie carrying his wife1In Chinese folklore and literature, Zhu Bajie is a character known for his humorous and ridiculous behavior. He is one of the main characters in the classic novel “Journey to the West” (also known as “Monkey” in some English translations). Zhu Bajie is a half-human, half-pig creature with various comical and exaggerated traits; refers to a sudden and drastic change in a situation or scene, particularly from a state of uncertainty or confusion to something that becomes comical, absurd, or clear.. The difference between the two was quite substantial.

He sighed and walked over to Ruan Jiujiu, letting her lean on him. He carried and helped her back to the bedroom, laying her down on the bed.

With her softness and fragrance in his arms, Cheng Jun felt unusually calm. The reason was that Ruan Jiujiu went from calling him “Piggy Brother” to “Big Brother Jun” in a state of inebriation, making the scene before him exceedingly strange.

Ruan Jiujiu clung to his neck without letting go. “Tell me a story. Tell me a story.”

Cheng Jun, annoyed by her antics, asked slowly, “What story do you want to hear?”

“Just… how about telling me One Thousand and One Nights?2also known as “Arabian Nights,” is a collection of Middle Eastern folktales and stories that are framed by the story of Scheherazade, a clever young woman who tells stories to King Shahryar to keep herself alive.

Cheng Jun: “…”

This story would take several days and nights to complete.

Ruan Jiujiu, still tipsy, insisted without letting go.

Her cheeks were rosy, her eyes shimmered like waves, and her red lips were soft and enchanting. It was truly captivating.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, Cheng Jun remained silent for a moment, suddenly realizing that he had dug a hole for himself and was about to suffer.

Ruan Jiujiu giggled suddenly. “You’re really handsome.”

From childhood to adulthood, Cheng Jun had always detested others commenting on his appearance. But Ruan Jiujiu was not just anyone.

He looked down at Ruan Jiujiu, who was clinging to him with a seductive smile, and her captivating gaze and intoxicating red lips made him temporarily forget his own discomfort.

Ruan Jiujiu remained motionless for a while. Just when Cheng Jun thought she had fallen asleep, she mumbled in a drowsy voice, “I won’t allow you to die… no one… can hurt you…”

A strange emotion rolled through his chest, burning yet gentle.

Cheng Jun softly responded, “It won’t happen.”

Except for Ruan Jiujiu, no one could hurt him anymore.

In her half-asleep state, Ruan Jiujiu uttered one last sentence.

“I’ll be with you… so, don’t be afraid.”

The dream showed her Cheng Jun standing alone at the door, as if abandoned by the entire world.

So, she said those words to Cheng Jun.

The bedroom was eerily quiet.

The man sitting on the edge of the bed supported the mattress with one hand, letting Ruan Jiujiu hold onto his neck. His head hung low, his disheveled hair fell over his eyelids, obscuring his gaze. He maintained a motionless posture, silent for a long time.

Finally.

The man’s slow and melodious voice said, “So we have an agreement.”

The intoxicated Ruan Jiujiu didn’t hear anything clearly; she just continued to mumble to herself, unaware of the scenes she might be dreaming about.

Cheng Jun leaned down and planted a kiss on her red lips. The simple touch of lips against lips was so heart-pounding.

In the end, he felt it was not enough. His kisses lingered on her eyebrows, eyelids, forehead, and finally returned to her soft lips. He lightly nibbled on Ruan Jiujiu’s lips, as if several ants were crawling over them, causing a tickling sensation that made her emit a soft hum.

Lips and tongues easily entwined. In her half-awake state, Ruan Jiujiu felt like the air in her lungs was about to be drawn out. She struggled a few times, but the other party grabbed her wrist, making her feel as if a thousand pounds were pressing down on her, rendering her unable to move. She gave in to his kisses, which grew more intense as she drifted into deeper slumber.

His kiss trailed down her cheek and landed on her soft and fair neck.

Her flawless white skin was like a clean canvas, waiting for some vibrant strokes of color.

Finally, as fruit farmer Cheng Jun successfully planted a ripe red strawberry.

Just when he wanted to take it a step further, Ruan Jiujiu had already given up struggling and fallen asleep.

Cheng Jun: “…”

His throat felt like it had swallowed a burning ember, the scorching heat searing through his blood and the tender membranes of his mouth, every nerve screaming.

“Jiujiu…” His voice was dry and hoarse.

However, not only did Ruan Jiujiu not wake up, but she suddenly kicked the unprepared Cheng Jun off the bed with a swift kick. She had a bad temper when waking up, and she couldn’t stand anyone disturbing her sleep. Her indiscriminate attack completely shattered the romantic atmosphere at that moment.

Cheng Jun, who was sitting on the floor, turned his head to look at Ruan Jiujiu.

She was sleeping soundly.

Cheng Jun remained silent for a long time and then let out a sigh.

“Ah.”
