TATLC Chapter 37

The imaginary story of Chen Xiao Mi finding a ‘treasure book’ spread quickly in the village.

 

Grandma Chen became curious as soon as she heard the story.

 

“Chen Xiao Mi has found treasure in the mountain, why don’t we try our luck too?” Grandma Chen talked about it at the dinner table.

 

Chen Shou Xin’s heart jolted as he listened: ‘Mother, please don’t send me to the mountains, have you forgotten how your second son died? He died from venturing into the mountains!’

 

“Mother, just give up on that thought. Chen Xiao Mi is really strange, that’s why he survived the mountains!”

 

Granny Chen shook her head with indifference: “He’s just a Bio.”

 

“Mother, my elder brother is right about this, Chen Xiao Mi must have rummaged through the entire mountain in search of treasure.” Chen Shou Ren chimed in, he was also afraid for his own safety.

 

Chen Shou Xin and Chen Shou Ren usually looked down on each other, but finally they were eye to eye.

 

“I doubt it, there must be something left.”

 

Grandpa Chen snapped: “Are you done with your crazy talk? We’ve already lost a son, isn’t that enough?”

 

Grandpa Chen always felt guilty for the death of his second son, but only sometimes, that time he agreed to risk his son’s life as well.

 

Grandma Chen hated Chen Xiao Mi even more now that Grandpa Chen was yelling at her.

 

Grandma Chen thought Chen Xiao Mi was just a hunter, but her other grandson Chen Jing was an intellectual. Chen Jing could make better use of the ‘treasure book’ if he was the one who found it. She was so angry that it wasn’t her favorite grandson who made the big bucks.

 

Chen Shou Xin and his family once again defamed Chen Xiao Mi after Chen Xiao Mi kicked him out.

 

Chen Xiao Mi’s reputation suddenly changed and got worse quickly.

 

Grandma Chen would only open her mouth in front of the villagers while saying that Chen Xiao Mi completely neglected her grandfather’s health, she could not believe her own grandson could be so unfilial.

 

Some villagers who were jealous of Chen Xiao Mi’s success took the moral high ground and accused Chen Xiao Mi of being unfilial.

 

Chen Xiao Mi did not care about this reputation at all.

 

In fact, he had a good time when the villagers started talking to him a few days ago, it had been a long time since anyone wanted to talk to him except for his two younger brothers and also Lu Lin. But the novelty soon wore off.

 

The villagers always asked questions like ‘what inspired you to make kang’, ‘do you still make your own liquor’, ‘what inspired you to make gloves’… …

 

Lu Lin gave all the credit to Chen Xiao Mi because he didn’t want the Lu Family to make a fuss, but the truth was that Chen Xiao Mi had nothing to do with those ideas, so he had an idea how to answer those questions. He would just pull a long face and leave. Soon the villagers thought Chen Xiao Mi was too narrow-minded to share.

 

Lu Lin did not have a good way to get Chen Shou Xin and his family to shut up. Devotion was the most valued characteristic in that time and space.

 

“Your uncle is a bit annoying.” Lu Lin said.

 

Chen Xiao Mi squinted and nodded: “He just wants to humiliate me.”

 

Chen Xiao Mi knew he could not possibly let that happen, he knew the entire Chen Shou Xin family would only let him go once he softened his attitude.

 

Lu Lin frowned: “But I don’t think he will take no for an answer now that he knows we have made a lot of money.”

 

Chen Xiao Mi suddenly looked ferocious: “I’ll ask him to speak with my bamboo stick!”

 

Chen Xiao Mi used to worry about his younger brothers’ marriages, he once feared what if no one wanted to get engaged to his younger brothers because of his bad reputation. But that was no longer Chen Xiao Mi’s concern, he decided to buy his younger brothers’ spouses if no one wanted to marry them.

 

Human nature is a funny thing.  Some people will continue to harass you if you give them attention, and they will lie if you ignore them.

 

The villagers were used to the drama between Chen Xiao Mi and Grandma Chen, soon no one was talking about it because Grandma Chen was the only one who kept barking.

 

Chen Shou Xin was very disappointed that Chen Xiao Mi was not affected by the talk.

 

And soon the tables were turned. Just a few days later, the villagers started talking about Chen Shou Xin just being petty by making a scene, Chen Shou Xin ended up losing money in his glove business, which was why he asked Chen Xiao Mi for money.

 

The villagers did not approve of that behavior, they even rejoiced in Chen Shou Xin’s failure.

 

Chen Shou Xin became angry when he heard the villagers start making fun of him instead of criticizing Chen Xiao Mi, but there was nothing he could do about it.
