TATLC Chapter 7

Lu Lin got a clear picture of the Chen brothers’ routine after he was married to Chen Xiao Mi for about two days.

Chen Xiao Mi was the breadwinner, he would leave early and return late, hunting in the mountains.  Chen Xiao Cai would take Chen Xiao Mai to collect firewood, they would also look for wild vegetables and feed the chickens, Chen Xiao Cai would ask Chen Xiao Mai to stay at home if it was a long walk.

Seeing the Chen siblings working hard all day, Lu Lin who was lying on the door plank felt guilty.

Even the two little kids contributed, he, on the other hand, did nothing but sleep.

Lu Lin looked around, he was determined to make himself useful as well. They needed more blankets, otherwise they would freeze to death on cold winter nights.

Chen Xiao Cai kept sniffing around as soon as he set foot in the house after he returned from the mountain with a basket of firewood.

‘What is this smell? Delicious!’ Chen Xiao Cai thought.

Lu Lin took a glance at Chen Xiao Cai and said: “Hey, you’re back, I made a poached egg.”

“Poached eggs? Where did you get the eggs? Our chickens are still too young to lay eggs.”  Chen Xiao Cai asked curiously.

“I saw some pheasants today and I found some eggs.”

Chen Xiao Cai was surprised to hear how lucky Lu Lin was, he did not pester Lu Lin for more details, the child was just happy to have eggs.

“Here, eat it.”

Chen Xiao Cai looked at the eggs on the plate with sparkling eyes, he hesitated for a moment and raised his head: “You eat too.”

Lu Lin did not expect this child to be this considerate and generous.

People in Lu Lin’s hometown no longer raised their own chickens for eggs, so the demand for eggs was very high. So, Lu Lin had kept two baskets of eggs in the store with about four hundred eggs in each basket. And now it came in handy.

The eggs in the convenience store might not be as nutritious as the current free-range cultured eggs, but hey, it was better than no eggs.

Lu Lin had served himself two eggs and rice before Chen Xiao Cai returned, it felt good to have a full stomach.

Lu Lin took a bite of the egg that Chen Xiao Cai gave him, and then Chen Xiao Cai immediately took the egg back. Only then did Lu Lin realize that Chen Xiao Cai had just offered him the egg because he wanted to make sure Lu Lin didn’t poison the egg.

Lu Lin shook his head resignedly: ‘You must be very strategic for your age.’

Chen Xiao Cai took a bite and asked Lu Lin: “Did you put oil in the pot?”

Lu Lin nodded: “Yes, I did.”

“You’re a spendthrift.” Chen Xiao Cai gritted his teeth.

Lu Lin couldn’t believe this kid just called him a spendthrift. He took a few deep breaths and realized people in modern times were trying hard to stay away from oil, but oil was precious in ancient times, oil could only be extracted from animals, and many people didn’t even have access to oil. The lard that he had just used was probably melted by Chen Xiao Mi.

Lu Lin thought about the situation and remembered he had kept about a dozen bottles of oil in the store, people in modern times were addicted to oil, so he usually kept a sufficient amount of oil in the store.

‘The oil in the store can meet the family’s needs for a long time.’ Lu Lin thought.

Thinking of his shop, Lu Lin had never felt so rich in his entire life, but it was a pity that he could not show off all the goods to his heart’s content.

Chen Xiao Cai took his time to finish his egg, it felt like he was trying to savor the flavor of the egg in its entirety, then he gave it to Chen Xiao Mai. The two of them stared at the two remaining eggs, but neither of them touched the eggs.

Chen Xiao Cai placed the plate on the table gently, he was saving the eggs for his elder brother Chen Xiao Mi.

‘The Chen siblings are the laughing stock of the village, Chen Xiao Mi is a bad star, Chen Xiao Cai is as vicious as his elder brother, Chen Xiao Mai is special. But in fact, I have never met siblings who care for each other more than they do. This is what families should do for each other!’

“Big brother, that man made poached eggs, but he used a little oil, what a stupid man!” Chen Xiao Cai complained to Chen Xiao Mi as soon as Chen Xiao Mi entered the room.

Chen Xiao Mi finished the two eggs with relish, Chen Xiao Mi was not a picky eater, he never complained about the rough rice, but of course he would enjoy a good meal.

“It’s okay, I can always hunt and melt more pigs.” Chen Xiao Mi comforted Chen Xiao Cai.

Chen Xiao Cai looked at the empty bag on Chen Xiao Mi’s back: “It’s a tough day today, big brother?”

Chen Xiao Mi’s eyes dimmed: “Yes, it looks like winter will come early this year.”

“That guy is better now, let’s have him do some work.” Chen Xiao Cai blinked.

Chen Xiao Mi thought for a moment and nodded.

‘After all, he is a man, he can always go to the mountains to look for vegetables if he does not dare to go hunting with me.’ Chen Xiao Mi thought.
