On Monday, Chen Qian took Liu Fan to work.
While sitting in the car, Liu Fan suddenly remembered, “Oh! By the way, who exactly is that Tuan Tuan? Is it that pretty receptionist?”
Chen Qian stiffened slightly, almost imperceptibly. “It’s not her.”
“Then who is it?” Liu Fan couldn’t help but smile. He didn’t have much interaction with Tuan Tuan. But she had specifically called Chen Qian for him. Liu Fan had a good impression of this unexpectedly kind-hearted girl.
Chen Qian replied warily, “She has already resigned.”
“What?” Liu Fan asked in astonishment. “Why?”
Chen Qian’s tone was very cold. “She saw the company’s situation wasn’t good and left.”
“That can’t be…” Liu Fan didn’t think Tuan Tuan was that kind of person. “Oh, I was hoping to be colleagues with her.”
“What the-!” Chen Qian suddenly raised his voice, sounding a bit embarrassed and angry. “Why do you keep asking about a woman you haven’t even met!”
Liu Fan was startled. Why did he explode so suddenly? Did he need to have an outburst every day to feel energised? “Alright, alright. I won’t ask anymore.”
Chen Qian grumbled for a bit, then said, “Previously, the company had changes in the product pages of those brochures. Now we’re focusing on new community media. It’s very comprehensive, covering all the larger communities in City C. We don’t have the materials ourselves; they were created by the previous contractor. I’ll find someone to send them to you when we get to the office.”
“Alright.” Liu Fan and Chen Qian had discussed the compensation issue last night. Liu Fan would join the operations department, still doing copywriting. He didn’t really care about this. But Chen Qian was very particular about it. He believed that Liu Fan’s personal salary should be separate from the money he gave Liu Fan. At the very least, the benefits should be the same as what Liu Fan had at his previous company.
Liu Fan: “…”
You can keep the salary card yourself. We don’t practise this kind of thing in our family.
Since the materials needed to be revised, many parts of the VI set would also need to be changed. The materials Liu Fan’s previous company had given to Fanyu were finalised versions, and it would be troublesome to modify them. Liu Fan left a message for Liu Mengjiao, asking her to send him a set of source files.
Liu Mengjiao: All of them? Good thing I haven’t deleted them yet.
Liu Fan: Yeah.
Liu Mengjiao: Can you manage on your own? If not, you can write the text, and I’ll make the changes for you.
Liu Fan: I can handle the Photoshop part myself, but for CorelDRAW, I’ll need your help. It’s already converted to curves, right?
Liu Mengjiao: Ah, it has been converted to curves. But you don’t need to change everything, right? I can redo the parts that need changes. I still have all the materials anyway.
Liu Fan: Thanks. I’ll ask Chen Qian to treat you to a meal.
Liu Mengjiao: You’re really not shy about giving orders to General Manager Chen.
What’s there to be shy about? Liu Fan saw Tuan Tuan in the list and couldn’t help but send a message: I heard you resigned?
While playing on his phone, they arrived at the office building. Chen Qian walked ahead, carrying Liu Fan’s belongings. They went up to the 17th floor, and as soon as they entered the company, Zhou Yang came up to them. Having already heard from Chen Qian, he quickly took the items. “Shall I take Liu Ge to complete the onboarding?”
“I’ll take him myself.” Chen Qian only handed the items to Zhou Yang, instructing him to find a spot in the operations area for Liu Fan’s things.
“Why are you here?”
The three of them turned around to see a surprised Li Yu, holding a stack of papers, likely on his way to the copier. Seeing Liu Fan, he was evidently shocked so his voice sounded uncontrollably anxious.
Liu Fan greeted him, “Oh, we’ll be colleagues from now on.”
Li Yu looked as if he had seen a ghost.
Chen Qian said, “Liu Fan will be handling the company’s copywriting in the operations department. He’ll be working closely with your sales department. Give him a copy of the materials provided by the previous contractor.”
After this, Chen Qian led Liu Fan away. Neither of them harboured any ill feelings towards Li Yu. They simply didn’t take him seriously. On the other hand, Li Yu stood there, his face alternating between pale and red. Facing Chen Qian or Liu Fan alone, he could pretend to be indifferent. But encountering both of them together left him feeling awkward.
From the reception desk, Du Yuchan excitedly asked, “Hey, is that the guy from last time? Is he General Manager Chen’s boyfriend?”
Jiang Wenying, who was at the reception to pick up something, chimed in, “Of course! Didn’t you see the ring on his hand? It’s the same style as General Manager Chen’s!”
Du Yuchan whispered and giggled, “You noticed so well. I’m going to post on Weibo, hehe.”
Their conversation reached Li Yu’s ears. He took a few deep breaths, sighed, and turned to find his copier.
Seeing him walk away, Du Yuchan whispered to Jiang Wenying, “I thought there was something going on between General Manager Chen and Assistant Li. I used to post about them on Weibo. But now I’m getting slapped in the face so hard, it hurts.”
“I thought so too. The two of them seemed so close, and Assistant Li was always so attentive to General Manager Chen,” Jiang Wenying sighed. “But when that gentleman came last time, I realised the truth. Just one look from General Manager Chen, and I knew—that’s love. And the boyfriend is so good-looking, standing together they are adorable.”
The two girls chattered at the reception desk. Liu Fan walked with operations manager Gu Yiquan, listening to him introduce his duties. “When do you need this?”
“Take your time, no need to hide it from you. These placements can’t go live yet,” Gu Yiquan said, obviously troubled. Liu Fan responded, “General Manager Chen said the procedures with the bank are underway. It should be ready by next month.”
Gu Yiquan looked at him and nodded, “If that’s the case, we’ll align with the funding schedule. Honestly, these things were all outsourced before, and we didn’t have anyone internally to oversee them. General Manager Chen said this is your area of expertise, so we won’t have much input. Ask if you need anything.”
Liu Fan heard a girl’s soft laughter nearby and glanced over. The two girls, seeing him look their way, laughed even harder and gave him friendly nods.
At least the company atmosphere was good.
Liu Fan was shown to his desk, where a computer was already set up. As soon as he logged in, he saw an email notification. Li Yu had already sent him the materials.
The bundled files were well-organised with clear image and document sections. Despite the content being quite lacklustre, Liu Fan spent the whole morning gathering additional materials. Chen Qian stopped by briefly, informing him that he had an appointment and would be back in the afternoon, reminding Liu Fan to eat lunch. Liu Fan agreed. But when lunchtime came, he was so absorbed in his work that he lost track of time.
“Liu Fan?”
A female voice jolted him out of his concentration. Looking up, he saw the girl who had greeted him at the front desk earlier.
“It’s 12 o’clock, time to eat,” she said, handing him a plastic bag with a friendly smile. “Lunch break is from 12 to 2.”
“Oh… okay. Thank you,” Liu Fan replied, surprised as he took the takeout bag. “How much is this?”
“No need,” the girl shook her head with an odd smile. “General Manager Chen ordered this, so it’s on him. He even picked the dishes himself.”
She introduced herself, “I’m Jiang Wenying, and I handle administration along with Du Yuchan at the front desk. Let us know if you need anything.”
“I will. Thank you,” Liu Fan thought the admin staff here were lively and enthusiastic. He opened the plastic bag to find two dishes and a soup—not a lavish meal, but it looked quite appetising.
“Should be,” Jiang Wenying asked hesitantly, “Do you like the food?”
Liu Fan found it slightly strange. But since Chen Qian had ordered it, it was naturally to his taste. “Yes, thank you. I like these dishes.”
“Great,” Jiang Wenying smiled and happily hopped away.
After her kind gesture, Liu Fan suddenly remembered Tuan Tuan. The girls at this company seemed quite charming. He checked his friend list to see if Tuan Tuan was online but couldn’t find the name anywhere.
Liu Fan: “…”
Had he been unfriended?
He was baffled and puzzled over it for a while, unable to figure out what had happened. With no solution in sight, he let it go and focused on his lunch, which was more important at the moment.
