Some random character tidbits not mentioned in the main story.
[Alvin]
Blond hair, blue eyes, short hair.
Fire attribute, swordsman, favors using a greatsword.
Gift: Willpower (Defense bonus, resistance to forced movement by sheer willpower).
When trying to hide his emotions or making tough decisions, he’ll take a deep breath to calm himself down. He doesn’t lie; if he’s asked about something he doesn’t want to answer, he just stays silent.
1. As the Knight Commander, he’s left-handed with his sword but can also handle a spear.
2. His parents were part of the Church of Light but died in battle when he was still a baby. He grew up in an orphanage run by the church.
3. Alvin started learning swordsmanship at around five years old and immediately showed remarkable talent. But due to his young age and mischievous personality, Selina was initially hesitant. She actually preferred another child, who was eight at the time…but in the end, Alvin’s cuteness as a child won her over.
4. When young Alvin first met young Hilier, he threw a ball at him and made him cry (although Hilier didn’t cry because he got hit on the head).
5. The Divine Gift Buff granted by the God of Light gives the Knight Commander a faint glowing effect when he uses divine power. The glow is faint, and since Light-attribute magic is naturally bright, it’s barely noticeable, so even Alvin isn’t aware of this effect. However, for three months following Divine Descent, this effect is amplified by lingering divine power. While it’s fine during the day, at night, anytime Alvin activates his powers, his entire body will emit a subtle glow. He’s been mistaken for a ghost more than once on night patrol, turning him into another church legend.
As a side note, the brightest part of him is his hair tuft, where divine energy concentrates the most.
6. Alvin has only two sets of casual clothes; if they’re damaged, he’ll buy another set. Even his pajamas are standard issue from the Church of Light—he basically has no personal life at all.
7. His appetite is slightly bigger than average, but to prevent himself from slacking off, he usually only eats to 70% fullness.
8. Alvin is actually wealthy. The first time he checked his finances was about a month after taking Cooper in. He was stunned for a few seconds when he saw the number, then sighed in relief—he wouldn’t be eaten out of house and home.
9. Alvin’s definition of “I’m fine” is “I can still fight.” So every time he says that, he genuinely believes he’s not lying.
10. He doesn’t like rainy days, especially rainy nights.
[Hilier]
Long, flaxen hair, lake-green eyes, with a braid that falls over his right shoulder.
Water attribute, priest-turned-mage, dual-trained in healing and magic.
Gift: Faith (HP/MP boost, spirit boost, increased recovery rate).
Hilier has a naturally compassionate expression; he appears gentle and delicate, but he’s actually quite assertive. When pressure builds up to a breaking point, he can have sudden emotional breakdowns, expressing it in scary outbursts, violent tantrums, or just bawling his eyes out—usually with Alvin as his first and only “victim.”
1. Hilier’s staff is primarily wooden but contains a significant amount of mithril, making it weigh about twelve pounds.
2. His Divine Grace Day ceremonial crown, robes, and accessories weigh almost thirty pounds—heavier than Alvin’s ceremonial outfit for the same day.
3. Hilier’s parents died in an attack when he was seven.
4. When Hilier decided to take in Daniel, who was only three at the time, he specifically learned how to cook soft foods like rice porridge, fish paste, and fruit jams. But he soon discovered that a three-year-old could eat the same food he did and enjoyed it even more.
5. Hilier has a small collection room filled with strange “junk,” like a wooden carving covered in bite marks, an old ball, a broken sword, etc. His collection items come from Urea, Selina, Alvin, Cooper, Daniel, and others.
6. Despite looking quite polished, Hilier’s appearance is largely thanks to his attendants. He can’t even tell which outfit suits which occasion. Left to his own devices, he’d pair a purple ribbon with a green shirt.
7. Hilier doesn’t actually like to cry, except when he’s with Alvin, so young Alvin grew up mistakenly thinking Hilier was particularly weepy.
8. Hilier admired the Church of Light’s founder, Abel, so he didn’t eat fish. Later, after hearing Abel’s story firsthand from Luke, he went through a “de-fan” phase and ate fish and caviar nonstop for days as “revenge.”
[Alvin & Hilier]
Hilier, orphaned at seven, was not sent to the church’s orphanage but was taken in directly as a disciple by the old Pope, Urea.
Urea was busy, so young Hilier took care of himself during those first few months, maintaining a strict routine of reading at the library, eating meals at the dining hall, and returning to his room to sleep. He rarely interacted with anyone. Then came young Alvin—who, on his first day, accidentally hit Hilier on the head with a ball as he was coming out of the library.
Alvin rushed over to apologize and asked if it hurt. Hilier was stunned for a moment, then squatted down and burst into tears, scaring Alvin half to death.
For a while, Alvin tried to avoid the inexplicably crying boy, but Hilier, with a book in hand, would follow him around every day, thinking he was being sneaky. When Alvin practiced swordsmanship, Hilier would hide behind a tree to watch. When Alvin ate, Hilier sat in a corner and watched. When Alvin returned to his room, Hilier hid in the hallway corner, watching until Alvin entered his room before heading back to his own.
Eventually, Alvin gave in, took his lunch tray to Hilier’s corner one afternoon, sat next to him, broke his bread in half, and offered it to the crying boy. “Wanna play with me?” he asked.
From that day on, the two have walked side by side.
[Cooper]
Gray hair, heterochromatic blue-green eyes, with a thin scorpion-tail braid.
Fire attribute, berserker, adept with long spears and mounted lances.
Gift: Conviction (Attack bonus, increased piercing probability).
Half-crazed, his mind constantly battles between two contradictory emotions. He’s mostly stable, but if provoked, he can lose control, acting as if he has a split personality (though he doesn’t; both impulses are his own). Bloodthirsty, enjoys killing, and can hold his liquor.
1. Cooper doesn’t know who his father is, and his mother was a lowly woman who would sell anything for money—strength, body, or soul. He thinks she wouldn’t have hesitated to sell him, but she died before she had the chance.
2. Cooper knows a lot of shady tricks, like lock-picking, theft, smoke-blowing, lying, and so on.
3. He has pierced ears but doesn’t wear earrings.
4. The first time he met Daniel, he found him annoying and tricked him onto a rooftop he couldn’t get down from. Alvin found the tear-streaked Daniel that night and brought him down, while Cooper received the seventeenth scolding since becoming a disciple.
5. Though Cooper has minimal orcish blood, he did inherit the orcish appetite, eating as much as three Alvins.
6. He had a bad habit of biting when he was young, his sharp fangs making his bite almost like a weapon. Even after growing up, he still uses his teeth when he loses his temper.
7. Cooper dislikes vegetables because they’re not filling enough. He prefers meat and high-calorie foods like sweets.
[Cooper & Alvin]
One time, Alvin was tracking a high-level magical beast and took down a band of thieves along the way. When he returned to the city, he handed his bloodstained armor and uniform to the inn for cleaning, only for them to be stolen. The informed paladins chased down the culprits and took out a local gang in the process, led by none other than Cooper.
It was Cooper’s first time seeing paladins. To him, they were like walking light sources, and compared to them, he felt like a rat in the gutter. Even he didn’t know why he stepped forward to lead them, with no thought for the consequences. Later, in an uncharacteristic display of bravery, he asked Alvin if he would take him in.
Since the paladins couldn’t decide, they brought the young Cooper back to ask their commander. Alvin, seeing Cooper’s conflicted yet strong desire to walk in the light, remove evil, and become a protector, agreed to take him back to Kailya City for training.
