Very general MOBA terms
HP: health points
MP: mana points.
Buff: short for Buffing. A beneficial effect that enhances a unit’s abilities.
Debuff: short for Debuffing. A detrimental effect that weakens a unit’s abilities.
CC: crowd control. A type of debuff to limit one’s movement. Can be slowing them or stunning them or anything really.
CD: cooldown. The time it takes to recharge an ability after use.
Tower: sometimes called Turret. A stationary defensive structure usually placed along the lanes on the map. It provides defense by killing the enemy’s creeps and players, provides vision on the map, so it’s one of the objectives to destroy in the lane. A lane is considered collapsed when all the towers are destroyed i.e, there’s nothing to help you to kill the enemy creeps from destroying your crystal.
Top-lane: sometimes called side-lane. The shortest one on the map, so it’s usually guarded by one player from each team.
Mid-lane: the middle one, sandwiched between the upper jungle and the lower jungle area. Because of its proximity to both lanes and jungle, many mid-laners usually help other lanes after they’re done farming (killing creeps)
Jungler: the player who roams the jungle area. In that area, there’s a blue buff (usually grants MP restoration bonus), red buff (usually grants HP bonus), and many mobs (“river crabs” in LOL). Jungler usually is the one who “ganks” other players (ambush for kill).
Bottom-lane/bot-lane: the longest lane, usually guarded by two players:
- Support: can provide heals (in CN, it’s called giving milk lol)/buff/debuff/CC/other things other than pure damage. Also the one who usually provides vision via a Ward.
- ADC: Attack Damage Carry. Sometimes called AD or shooter (esp in CN). Usually the highest damage dealer/output, but it still depends on the team composition.
Glass cannon: High output but low defense (sometimes low agility/displacement capability). Assassin-type heroes and ADC heroes are often in this category.
Tank: High defense and/or HP but low movement capabilities.
Taunt: to make the opponent can only target and damage you.
Linkage: when two players keep sticking together. The most common ones are bot linkage (support+ADC) and mid-jungler linkage.
gold/economy: the currency you get from killing enemies, and you can use it to buy items.
Dragon: sometimes referred to as “Drake”. A powerful neutral monster that players can defeat to gain significant benefits for their team.
