Zhou Zhou neatly arranged the pile of snacks on the table. He then flipped through the textbook and asked Cheng Che, “Where should we start?”
“I’ve seen your test paper for this exam,” Cheng Che said. “Your fundamentals have problems. You haven’t grasped solubility rules, your use of ionic equations is poor, you haven’t memorised the most common chemical formulas, and there are issues with chemical bonds and molecular structures…”
He looked at Zhou Zhou’s gradually freezing smile and dimming eyes. He stopped at an appropriate time and then hesitated. He was not sure whether to ask bluntly or tactfully, “What have you been doing in your chemistry classes in your junior and senior years?”
Zhou Zhou, slightly nervous, rubbed his hands and said, “Doing what I like.”
“Like what?”
“Play Five in a Row.” Zhou Zhou glanced at Cheng Che carefully, “Flying chess, Go, military chess…”
“You don’t play anything else other than chess?” Cheng Che sighed and asked him.
“And occasionally, playing cards.” He chuckled shyly, “I’ve also tried portable mini Mahjong. Both the front and back tables say it’s handy…”
“…”
Cheng Che suddenly had some admiration for Zhou Zhou. With his chemistry foundation and grades, he somehow managed to rank in the top twenty of the grade for this monthly exam.
“You might as well give up chemistry,” Cheng Che suggested, “and then improve your scores in other subjects to increase your overall grade.”
“Give up?” Zhou Zhou widened his eyes. “I’ve given up on chemistry since high school.”
Never mind, pretend I didn’t say that.
Cheng Che picked up a chemistry textbook from the first year and began highlighting key points. Zhou Zhou watched him. He probably thought that Cheng Che’s brain was capable of multitasking, so he started talking, “I can’t improve my scores in other subjects. My maths is close to perfect. The other two subjects in science are the same. You know, with subjects like maths and science, if you can’t do it, you can’t do it. Then, I’m not good at Chinese compositions either. Whenever I encounter a writing style I’m not confident in, I tend to go off track. My English listening skills are weak too. As soon as the audio starts, I can’t help but daydream…”
“Hmm,” Cheng Che neatly marked the key points and handed the textbook to Zhou Zhou. He said, “Start by memorising what I’ve highlighted. You need to learn the basic knowledge before applying it to answer the questions.”
“Alright, alright,” Zhou Zhou took Cheng Che’s book and began reading.
“But don’t you have notes?” Zhou Zhou asked again. “You know… notes with important points, summaries, that kind of thing.”
“I don’t need those. I can remember,” Cheng Che said. “I find error sets more useful than notes. I’ll give them to you tomorrow.”
“Are you sure I’ll be able to understand your error sets?” Zhou Zhou asked without dignity.
“They’re from the first year,” Cheng Che opened the notebook and uncapped his pen. “Start memorising for now. I’ll give you some basic questions to answer later.”
“Alright, alright.”
Zhou Zhou lowered his head and looked at the textbook. He wasn’t incapable of learning chemistry. He just had absolutely no interest in it. Who knew why he felt nauseated every time he saw chemistry.
But things were different now. Cheng Che was tutoring him! Damn it, even if he felt like puking, he had to hold it in. Even if he had no interest, he had to study hard to improve every day. Maybe Cheng Che would feel happy and their relationship could progress further!
I’m truly a slave to love, Zhou Zhou thought to himself as he immersed himself in his self-appreciation. He recited the methods for the separation and purification of inorganic solutions.
The faint scent of minty sake on Cheng Che’s body made Zhou Zhou feel refreshed and comfortable. He quietly studied the book in the soft evening light and the clear scent around him. It was a rare moment of dedication.
Cheng Che occasionally glanced at Zhou Zhou while setting questions. Zhou Zhou wasn’t wearing his school jacket. Instead, he had on a loose white shirt. His fair and beautiful neck peeked out from the collar. His red lips moved as he recited the book. His eyelashes fluttered lightly. His hair was dark and soft-looking.
Actually, Zhou Zhou preferred wearing sweaters. But ever since he found out he was an Omega, he consciously started wearing shirts. He didn’t want to use a turtle neck collar to protect his gland, as it would be too obvious. The shirt collar could cover the gland just as well, giving him a sense of security.
He felt like he was a model for love walking on a tightrope.
Zhou Zhou finally finished reviewing the key points of this chapter with great difficulty. He wanted to turn to ask Cheng Che for paper but coincidentally met Cheng Che’s gaze.
Zhou Zhou doubted himself, thinking he must have seen it wrong. That gaze was too gentle, with a warm watery quality, like the evening sun outside the window. It was dazzling without blinding. But it made his heart beat like a drum.
Cheng Che lowered his head without much expression, continuing to write on the paper. He asked, ‘What’s the matter?'”
“Oh…” Zhou Zhou snapped out of it and attributed everything to his own hallucination of studying too hard. He said, “Could you lend me a piece of paper? I only brought the textbook and a pen. I want to write down what I just memorised.”
“Sure,” Cheng Che tore off a piece of white paper and handed it to him. “After you’re done writing it down, let me see. And then you can do the questions I prepared.”
Zhou Zhou looked at the pristine white paper and blinked his eyes. He could still recall that illusion-like gaze from earlier. Then, without thinking, he wrote a ‘Cheng’ on the paper.
Before he could continue with ‘Che’, he realised his mistake. He sneakily glanced at Cheng Che and guiltily blacked out the ‘Cheng’ with his pen. He then forced himself to focus on writing down what he had memorised.
