Zhou Zhou was woken up this morning by a call from Yu Yang.
“What the heck! You haven’t even gotten up yet?! Have you forgotten we’re supposed to sweep the school gate for a week? Get up quickly!” Yu Yang exclaimed.
“Isn’t it still early…” Zhou Zhou, half-asleep, replied, “Let me sleep a bit longer… I was studying chemistry last night…”
“No! If we don’t finish on time, we’ll both get into trouble. Get up now!” Yu Yang urged.
“Alright, alright…”
Zhou Zhou swore he wouldn’t make sarcastic comments anymore. If it wasn’t for him insisting on mentioning a 1.9-meter-long sausage yesterday while Yu Yang was eating a bun, Yu Yang wouldn’t have ended up vomiting all over the place…
When Zhou Zhou arrived at the school gate, Yu Yang was already sweeping the ground. Seeing him approaching, Yu Yang grabbed a broom leaning against a flowerbed and threw it at him, saying, “You idiot! Hurry up and sweep!”
Zhou Zhou, with his backpack on, reluctantly began sweeping the ground. As he swept, the school gate started to get lively as students began to enter the campus.
“Hey hey hey. Would I run into Cheng Che later?!” Zhou Zhou suddenly got excited, poking Yu Yang’s shoes with his broom. “If I’m too focused on sweeping and don’t notice, remind me, okay?”
“You wish!” Yu Yang rolled his eyes at Zhou Zhou. “Does ‘being serious’ ever clicked with you?” Yu Yang looked at his feet and jumped up immediately, “I have new shoes! If you poke me again, I will start a fight with you!”
“You were the one who vomited yesterday?!” Zhou Zhou scolded him, “You got up so early being so angry this morning… what the hell are you thinking!”
“You still have the nerve to ask?” Yu Yang turned his head and glared at him, “If it weren’t for you blabbering yesterday morning, we wouldn’t be here sweeping early in the morning!”
“We should feel the hardship of being a duty student…” Zhou Zhou replied sheepishly. It was true that he had caused this situation by not controlling his mouth. He leaned closer with a grin. “Don’t be mad anymore. I’ll buy you something from the store later, alright?”
Yu Yang reluctantly maintained a stern face and replied, “Fine. I’ll forgive you this once.”
“Great.” Zhou Zhou nodded. “I’ll buy you a grilled sausage.”
Then the two of them started playing around with their brooms at the school gate.
Zhou Zhou playfully blocked Yu Yang with his broom, retreating backward. However, he forgot that he was standing on the sidewalk. He had only taken a few steps back when he stepped on the edge of the curb and fell backward.
“Fuck…!” Zhou Zhou had one thought in his mind. Thankfully, he still had his backpack on. When he hits the ground, it should cushion the fall a bit.
He didn’t hit the ground. Someone caught him.
Zhou Zhou crashed into a pair of arms through his backpack. It was at this moment that the morning sun peeked through the corner of the teaching building. Gentle sunlight bathed the tender leaves on the tree branches, swaying as the wind blew, like little mirrors.
The scent of clear minty sake wafted from behind his neck. Zhou Zhou’s heart raced. He felt like his glands were heating up.
He really hated his backpack right now. It was getting in the way!
He lifted his head and looked behind. He saw a well-defined jaw, slightly pursed lips, a straight nose, and those dark eyes hidden beneath long eyelashes.
The morning breeze gently ruffled Cheng Che’s bangs. He held Zhou Zhou’s arms with both hands, looking down at him and saying, “You’re too playful.”
“I’m not!” Zhou Zhou straightened up. He turned around and stood in front of Cheng Che with his head lowered, pointing backward. “He wanted to hit me. I was just avoiding him.”
Yu Yang had grown accustomed to being the scapegoat for Zhou Zhou’s mischief. He admitted with a shrug, “Yeah, it’s all my fault. I reflect and repent.”
Cheng Che adjusted his school uniform jacket and checked his watch. “Morning self-study is about to start. Hurry up, you two.”
“Did you hear that, Yu Yang?” Zhou Zhou turned to Yu Yang and shouted, “Hurry up! Don’t just play around!”
Yu Yang responded with a middle finger.
When Zhou Zhou turned back, Cheng Che had already walked into the school gate. His silhouette bathed in the morning light, looking exceptionally graceful.
Zhou Zhou gazed at that silhouette for a while and then turned to look at Yu Yang, who was busy sweeping the ground. He asked, “Honestly, what do you think of Cheng Che?”
“I don’t know,” Yu Yang replied without lifting his head. “But you’re definitely not worthy of him.”
Unexpectedly, Zhou Zhou didn’t lash out at him.
Yu Yang raised his head slightly. He was a bit worried that his words might have hurt Zhou Zhou’s feelings. After all, people in the midst of a secret crush could be quite fragile and prone to insecurity.
But he had worried needlessly. When he looked up, all he saw was empty space. A broom lay peacefully on the ground, while Zhou Zhou had already entered the school gate.
“Take your time sweeping! I need to go study chemistry!” Zhou Zhou shouted cheerfully back at him, bouncing around.
“Zhou Zhou, you jerk!” Yu Yang stood outside the school gate, lamenting.
