It was Friday. Cheng Che still hadn’t come to school. Nor had he responded to Zhou Zhou’s messages.

Zhou Zhou suddenly felt very anxious. He was afraid that Cheng Che might abandon everything here and move to another place to live.

He didn’t know why he had such thoughts. Typically, this was how it happened in TV dramas. The male lead would disappear for a few days and then return to pack up his things and say a cold, “I’m leaving”. Or sometimes, they wouldn’t even say goodbye and would simply disappear completely.

After the second class on Friday morning, Yu Yang was assigned by the homeroom teacher to pick up some documents from the mailbox at the school gate. He walked to the mailbox with his hands in his pockets and his head down. He retrieved the documents as instructed and was about to head back into the school when, out of the corner of his eye, he suddenly saw a car parked outside the school gate.

It was a snow-white sports car that was too conspicuous. It should belong to Jin Wuqi.

In an instant, Yu Yang’s heart rate shot up. He stood in place, maintaining his half-turned posture, unsure of whether he should just go back to his classroom without looking back or approach the car.

Before he could react, the car door opened. Two people got out. One with blue hair – Jin Wuqi. And the other, if Yu Yang wasn’t mistaken, was Cheng Che, who hadn’t been to school for several days.

Yu Yang felt his head spin and his chest tightened. He saw Jin Wuqi hug Cheng Che and even pat his head. Their actions seemed intimate.

He probably understood now. Jin Wuqi liked high school students. Cheng Che might be his new target.

He couldn’t understand why Cheng Che would want to be with Jin Wuqi. Although they usually wore school uniforms, Cheng Che’s demeanor was anything but ordinary. Yu Yang remembered that Cheng Che had a valuable watch, and he wondered if Jin Wuqi had bought that for him.

Then again, why should Cheng Che necessarily reject Jin Wuqi? Jin Wuqi’s appearance, physique, and family background were top-notch. Why would Cheng Che refuse him? They actually seemed quite compatible.

Yu Yang felt heavy in his heart. He had been wondering why Jin Wuqi hadn’t replied to his WeChat for several days. But now he realised it was because Jin Wuqi had lost interest in him.

“Self-delusion,” he muttered under his breath then walked away without turning back towards the classroom building. The documents in his hand crumpled from the grip.

After delivering the materials to the teacher, Yu Yang went to the entrance of Class Two and called Zhou Zhou out.

He looked at Zhou Zhou, uncertain about how to tell him that Cheng Che was now with a stunningly attractive omega with blue hair and might be financially supported.

“Uh, you should not like Cheng Che anymore,” Yu Yang said.

Zhou Zhou had been absent-minded so he hadn’t heard what Yu Yang was saying clearly. He only caught the two words, ‘Cheng Che’. He quickly raised his head, asking, “Cheng Che? What’s the matter with Cheng Che?”

Yu Yang turned his head away, suppressing the bitterness and frustration inside him. He replied, “I saw him with someone else.”

Zhou Zhou was taken aback by this statement. He couldn’t believe it. He grabbed Yu Yang’s arm, furrowing his eyebrows. “When did you see this? Who is he with?”

“Stop asking. I saw it. He hasn’t been in touch with you for a reason,” Yu Yang said, trying to convey the truth. “I know you like him. And it might be hard to accept. But I don’t see any reason to lie to you. He is with another omega. I wouldn’t lie about this.”

“How is that possible!” Zhou Zhou stubbornly denied it. But his eyes were slowly welling up. “Where did you see him? When did this happen? He hasn’t been at school these days…”

“We’re all alphas at our school. So of course, he wouldn’t date someone from here,” Yu Yang muttered irritably. “That omega isn’t a student. All you need to know is that Cheng Che is with someone else.”

Yu Yang was consumed by anger and frustration. He couldn’t stand the thought of Zhou Zhou being deceived. He had come to share this information with his friend. But there was also a selfish motive underlying his intentions. That was along the lines of: ‘If I’m not happy, my buddy shouldn’t be happy either’.

The school bell rang. Yu Yang pushed the silent and dejected Zhou Zhou. “Let’s go back to class. Don’t dwell on it.”

Zhou Zhou returned to his classroom in silence. During class, he kept his head down, staring at his textbooks. He wasn’t prone to crying and he hadn’t cried. But his heart was indeed heavy with sorrow.

He didn’t doubt Yu Yang’s words and knew that there was no reason for Yu Yang to deceive him. He felt like he had been overly presumptuous, always thinking that Cheng Che might be somewhat different in his attitude with him. He believed he could gradually get closer to Cheng Che. And indeed, Cheng Che’s actions were perplexing: he was patient and even kissed Zhou Zhou.

However, the fact remained that in these few days when Cheng Che was absent. Zhou Zhou’s heart was growing colder.

Yu Yang’s words acted as the final straw that crushed Zhou Zhou’s hope. He didn’t even have the courage to confront Cheng Che. He was afraid of getting an answer that would make him sad. He would rather not know anything and at least maintain some anticipation.

But now, he felt like he had lost even the right to anticipate anything.

It was uncertain as to how many minutes into the class it was when someone knocked on the classroom door. The teacher was in the middle of the lecture. Still, Zhou Zhou remained buried in his books until he heard the visitor say, “Excuse me, teacher. Can I trouble you for a moment? I need to find Zhou Zhou.”

It felt like he had been stumbling around in a thick fog when suddenly, someone reached out to pull him back to reality. He couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw a tall figure standing at the classroom door, backlit by the bright light outside. He couldn’t make out the face or expression. But the voice was unmistakably Cheng Che’s.

“Cheng Che, you’re looking for Zhou Zhou, right? Alright, Zhou Zhou, please step out with Cheng Che for a moment,” the teacher said.

Zhou Zhou remained in his seat, still blinking in disbelief. He tried to get a better look at Cheng Che’s face. But the bright light outside made it impossible. It was Cheng Che, with the light casting his features in shadow. Zhou Zhou still couldn’t see clearly. However, his desk mate noticed his hesitation and gave him a nudge, saying, “Zhou Zhou, Cheng Che is calling for you. Snap out of it.”

Zhou Zhou responded in a daze and stood up, making his way out of the classroom through the back door. He finally got a clear look at Cheng Che’s face, which hadn’t changed much despite there was a hint of weariness on it. Even though only a few days had passed, it felt like Zhou Zhou hadn’t seen Cheng Che for a long time.

“Why are you looking for me?” Zhou Zhou asked quietly. He couldn’t face Cheng Che after hearing what Yu Yang had said.

Cheng Che looked at Zhou Zhou with those slightly vulnerable and bewildered eyes. There was a touch of redness at the corners of his eyes, making him look innocent and flustered.

“Let’s go to the self-study room,” Cheng Che said, “I need to talk to you.”
