With just over a month left before the college entrance examination, Saturday night was Cheng Che’s Grandfather’s birthday banquet. He discussed it with Zhou Zhou. But Zhou Zhou felt like it would be better for him not to attend for now. On the one hand, Zhou Zhou had only met Cheng Yan from Cheng Che’s family so his sudden appearance might seem unnatural. On the other hand, Zhou Zhou felt like his heat was about to come. He has been having a vague premonition these days. So, he didn’t dare to go to crowded places. However, he didn’t tell Cheng Che about this. He just asked him to accompany his Grandpa after dinner and not to think about coming back immediately.

Cheng Che didn’t listen to Zhou Zhou’s instructions at all. When Zhou Zhou pinched his face and asked if he had heard anything, Cheng Che replied indifferently, “Grandpa knows I’m here to accompany his future daughter-in-law. He’d be happy to let me go first.”

Zhou Zhou: “Is your mouth broken if you don’t talk nonsense for a day?”

Cheng Che’s hand moved down to touch Zhou Zhou’s thigh, replying, “My mouth isn’t broken. I don’t know whether yours would be.”

Zhou Zhou: “I suspect you’re up to something naughty. The evidence is compelling.”

On Saturday, Cheng Che was not at home all day because it was Grandpa’s birthday. Many relatives and friends who were not usually seen would come over during the day. Cheng Che, as the eldest grandson in the family, had to be there to greet them.

Cheng Yan, being the youngest son, was not as attentive as Cheng Che, the grandson. He had a class on Saturday morning. So, he simply said he would be busy all day and would come to the hotel for dinner later.

After telling Cheng Che this, he immediately sent a WeChat message to Zhou Qiao, saying; Baby, I’ll pick you up after work today.

Zhou Qiao was working overtime and replied; Get lost.

Cheng Che was surrounded by a group of relatives and friends in Grandpa’s house, unwilling to let him go. Besides being busy and dizzy, he still found time to go to the balcony and send a WeChat message to Zhou Zhou, asking if he had been studying well.

Zhou Zhou: Even if I want to study hard, I can’t when you send me a WeChat message every few minutes.

Cheng Che smiled: Be good, I’ll come back early tonight and bring you something to eat.

Zhou Zhou: You focus on your own things. I’ll order takeout myself. Don’t disturb me. Bye.

Cheng Che smiled and put his phone back in his pocket. He then went back inside to continue entertaining the guests.

In the evening, Cheng Yan set off for the hotel. Zhou Qiao was still working overtime, with a meeting scheduled for the night. She told Cheng Yan to hurry to the hotel and not think about seeing her since she was busy today.

Cheng Yan shamelessly harassed Zhou Qiao on WeChat for a while. They arranged to meet at the company after dinner.

He walked out of the lab, looked up at the sky, and saw that the sun was obscured by thick, grey clouds, only faintly shining through, making the air heavy and stifling. It made him feel uncomfortable inside and out. After a few more seconds of looking at the sky, he felt like he couldn’t breathe.

“It’s going to rain heavily,” Cheng Yan muttered to himself. He then opened the car door and got in.

Zhou Zhou felt something was wrong when he stepped out of the shower. He had felt hot all over before taking a shower. Thinking it was because of the weather, he showered early. It wasn’t until he was drying his hair and walking out that he realised he seemed to be in heat.

In fact, he really was in heat.

In a matter of seconds, he couldn’t stand steadily. He had to lean against the wall to move. The blood in his body seemed to be boiling rapidly and he felt as if he was being drenched with scalding water from head to toe, finding it difficult to breathe.

This heat was more intense and sudden than the previous heat, catching Zhou Zhou off guard. The side effects of the potent suppressant were now fully revealed. Zhou Zhou couldn’t even make it to his own room and collapsed to the ground.

His body, being just out of the shower, was quickly soaked in sweat. The lingering scent of minty sake pheromones in the room felt like a sudden onslaught of intense fire, pushing Zhou Zhou’s already sensitive body to the limit. He struggled to breathe, like a fish exposed to the scorching sun, stranded on the beach, his consciousness barely holding on.

He had thrown his phone on the bed before showering. Zhou Zhou gritted his teeth, propped himself up, and crawled laboriously toward the edge of the bed.

He was trembling all over, his vision blurry, and his mind buzzing. He lay on the edge of the bed, gasping for air, reaching out aimlessly on the bed. His pants were already soaked, and the sense of emptiness in his body was so strong it was terrifying. It wasn’t until he accidentally knocked Cheng Che’s pyjamas off the bed, and they fell on his neck, that the clear alpha pheromones on the pyjamas became the final spark. After that, Zhou Zhou finally looked at the blurry ceiling light and sobbed. He bit the pyjamas in his mouth. His consciousness was on the verge of collapse. He finally reached his phone in the last moment of his breakdown.

Zhou Zhou wiped away a tear and dialled the emergency contact number.

He had never felt these few seconds of waiting so long. Zhou Zhou clenched the phone, afraid that his blurred consciousness would prevent him from hearing Cheng Che’s voice.

The call was answered.

“Cheng Che… Cheng Che…” Zhou Zhou’s trembling lips released the pyjamas that were already wet from his biting. He urgently spoke, incoherently, “I’m in heat… You need to hurry…”

“You’re in heat?”

Zhou Zhou was stunned, feeling like he had been hit hard on the head with a stick. He couldn’t speak as he gasped for air.

He recognized this voice; it was the beta who had thrown food at him in the cafeteria. Zhou Zhou never knew his name. But he remembered his voice and knew it was him who had sent someone to deal with him back then.

It’s unclear why he would answer Cheng Che’s call…

“You’re in heat, huh?” Su Han’s voice carried a hint of amusement. “But Cheng Che is busy right now and can’t attend to you.”

Zhou Zhou’s head was buzzing, mixed with his terrifyingly fast heartbeat. He heard some rustling on the other end of the phone. He then heard Cheng Che’s breathing, as if he was biting his lip, accompanied by a few soft hums from his nose.

Zhou Zhou was all too familiar with that breathing. He knew exactly what it meant.

“No… no…” Tears streamed down Zhou Zhou’s face as if he was watching his most trusted person standing coldly on the edge of a cliff, watching him fall. His chaotic mind couldn’t think anymore. The phone slipped from his hand and Zhou Zhou curled up in despair. His body had reached the brink of panic. His consciousness blanketed by the heat of estrus and the harsh reality from the phone. His heart was pounding painfully, feeling like he was being pressed into boiling water, submerged in layers of searing liquid, with no end in sight.

This was Zhou Zhou’s first true heat since his differentiation. Cheng Che had promised that he would be by his side, that he would always be there for him. Yet, his call was answered by another man.

“Such a pity… Being in heat must be really uncomfortable, right?” Su Han’s voice came through the phone intermittently, like the hiss of a snake. “You’ll have to endure it yourself. If it’s too much, take some suppressants.”

Then the call was hung up, returning to the lock screen, which displayed a photo of Zhou Zhou and Cheng Che. It was taken one evening when Zhou Zhou was happily hugging Cheng Che, who was smiling. They were wearing pyjamas and their faces were close together.

Zhou Zhou’s lips were bleeding from his own biting. His teeth trembled as he choked out, “Cheng Che… you bastard…”

The promises of ‘I will always be by your side’ and ‘I will always accompany you’ now lingered in Zhou Zhou’s confused mind like a curse, filled with familiar voices and faces.

Cheng Che, Cheng Che, it was all Cheng Che.

But Cheng Che, why aren’t you here?

Where are you? You promised to be with me, you promised to always be with me. They are all your own promises.

You liar.

The sky, shrouded in darkness, suddenly lit up with a dazzling lightning bolt. Two seconds later, the heavy thunder sounded from a distance, as if tens of thousands of tons of clouds had finally sprung a leak, and a torrential rain poured down. It beat relentlessly against the windows, drowning out Zhou Zhou’s painful and unbearable cries in the room.

*Translator’s Note: Meh. The typical drama. I really wanna slap Su Han. But don’t worry. Cheng Che didn’t do anything sexual with Su Han other than beating Su Han to the brink of death perhaps. Hahahaha. I’m sorry I missed last week’s update. I’ll try to catch up. Pray for me that I’ll get another job that won’t squeeze the life out of me. Ugh. -K

Next update: -undecided-
