The evening meeting wasn’t too long. Zhou Qiao hadn’t taken her phone to the meeting room. After everything was over and she was ready to leave work, she went back to the office to pick up her phone. She saw two missed calls from Zhou Zhou.
As she called Zhou Zhou back, she left the office, where Cheng Yan was already waiting for her downstairs.
Once they were in the car, Zhou Qiao frowned. She had already called Zhou Zhou back three times, but there was no answer.
“What’s wrong?” Cheng Yan asked her.
“Zhou Zhou called me twice during the meeting. But now there’s no answer when I call back,” Zhou Qiao said to Cheng Yan as she listened to the phone. “Call your nephew and see if they’re together.”
Cheng Yan immediately took out his phone and dialled Cheng Che’s number. He said, “They should be together. Cheng Che left before me.”
However, Cheng Che didn’t answer his phone either.
“Let’s go home,” Zhou Qiao said. Her expression was tense as she pointed to the steering wheel. “Drive, and I’ll keep calling Zhou Zhou.”

As Zhou Qiao opened the door, she was taken aback.
The air was filled with the scent of strawberry milkshake pheromones. But she could clearly sense that the pheromones were completely cold, like a condensed smell, not at all like the usual heat of estrus.
Zhou Qiao almost stumbled to Zhou Zhou’s room. As soon as she glanced inside, she froze in place, breathing uncontrollably with wide eyes.
Cheng Yan had already put on his isolation bracelet when he detected the unusual omega pheromones. Seeing Zhou Qiao’s expression, he knew something was wrong. However, when he stepped into the room, he was still struck by the sight before him.
Zhou Zhou was curled up at the desk, his back to the door, with dried blood on the glands of his neck and blood dripping on the floor. His pyjamas were soaked, cold against his body. One hand rested on the bottom drawer of the desk, which had been pulled open, with his fingers stained with blood.
Cheng Yan reacted quickly. He stepped forward, grabbed some tissue from the desk, and pressed it against the back of Zhou Zhou’s neck to staunch the bleeding. He checked Zhou Zhou’s pulse and then turned to Zhou Qiao, shouting, “Bring a coat. We need to take Zhou Zhou to the hospital. Quickly!”
Zhou Qiao finally felt like she could breathe. She took a deep breath and then turned and hurried to the closet, pulling out a long coat. She stumbled to Zhou Zhou’s side, kneeling down and trying to figure out how to cover her brother properly with the coat. She was usually rational. But seeing her lively and clever brother in this state made her lose her composure. All she felt was panic and confusion, tears streaming down her face.
Especially when she saw the two empty syringes of potent suppressants scattered beside Zhou Zhou’s head, with traces of blood still lingered on the needles. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed, almost unable to beat.
Cheng Yan took the coat from Zhou Qiao and wrapped Zhou Zhou in it. Then, he picked him up and hurried out of the room without stopping. “Qiao Qiao, stop crying for now. Get in the car. You can hold Zhou Zhou in the back seat later. It’s still raining outside. Remember to bring an umbrella to shield Zhou Zhou from the rain.”
Zhou Qiao wiped her tears, picked up an umbrella, and followed Cheng Yan.
Outside the building, Zhou Qiao held the umbrella for Cheng Yan. The rain was relentless. Cheng Yan asked Zhou Qiao to get into the back seat first. Then, he carefully placed Zhou Zhou inside, resting his head on Zhou Qiao’s lap. Afterward, he closed the car door and sat in the driver’s seat, completely soaked. Cheng Yan ran his hand through his wet hair, started the car, and glanced at Zhou Qiao through the rearview mirror. He comforted her, “It will be okay. We’ll be at the hospital soon. Don’t worry.”
Zhou Qiao trembled as she reached out to touch Zhou Zhou’s pale, cold face. When her fingertips touched Zhou Zhou’s lips, which he had bitten himself, she couldn’t help but cry. Her tears fell on Zhou Zhou’s face. Zhou Qiao had never felt so devastated.
“Zhou Zhou… Zhou Zhou…” Zhou Qiao choked on her brother’s name. “It’s all my fault. Please open your eyes and look at me…”
The rain pounded on the car window, creating chaos. Zhou Zhou’s eyes remained tightly shut, his long lashes resting against his cheeks, looking lifeless.
Cheng Yan tightly pursed his lips and drove in silence.

Upon arriving at the hospital, Zhou Zhou was immediately taken to the emergency room. Cheng Yan held Zhou Qiao, who was in distress, in the hallway, listening to her suppressed cries emanating from his arms.
“It was a mistake to give him the potent suppressants in the first place…” Zhou Qiao cried, gripping Cheng Yan’s clothes. She felt it was her carelessness that had allowed Zhou Zhou to end up like this. “It’s all my fault. If I had taken my phone to the meeting room today, I wouldn’t have missed Zhou Zhou’s calls…”
“No, no,” Cheng Yan reassured her, patting her back gently. “It’s not your fault, Qiao Qiao. The most important thing now is Zhou Zhou’s condition. Don’t blame yourself.”
After waiting outside the emergency room for half an hour, a nurse came out with a medical report and asked, “Who is the patient’s family? Please sign this consent form for the gland removal surgery.”
Zhou Qiao, tears streaming down her face, couldn’t believe it. “Gland removal surgery?”
“The patient is in shock due to severe pheromone imbalance. During estrus, he didn’t receive the soothing of alpha pheromones, leading to confusion and self-injury to his glands. He also used two doses of potent suppressants consecutively. Currently, the situation is very serious. There may be a risk of not being able to save the glands. If the situation worsens, we may have to remove the glands to block the interaction between pheromones and suppressants,” the nurse explained as she handed over the consent form. “Please sign here. We will do our best to save the glands. But we must consider the worst-case scenario.”
Zhou Qiao was trembling as she signed the form. She didn’t understand how things had suddenly come to this.
“Tell your nephew…” Zhou Qiao’s face was covered in tears as she turned to Cheng Yan. “I never want to see him again. And he shouldn’t expect to see Zhou Zhou ever again.”
Cheng Yan opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, the elevator dinged, and the doors opened. Cheng Che, soaked from head to toe, stepped out, gasping for breath. His face was pale, rainwater dripped down from his hair, and he looked completely dishevelled. There was a wound on the back of his left hand, the edges were white from being soaked. Blood and rainwater mixed, dripping from his fingertips.
“What’s Zhou Zhou’s condition?” Cheng Che asked, somewhat dazed. He seemed to have just crawled out of the water. He had been in the corridor for only two seconds but the floor beneath his feet was already wet.
Zhou Qiao, with red eyes and an expressionless face, walked up to Cheng Che. She smelled the unmistakable scent of a strange omega pheromone on him, even after being washed by the rain. She raised her hand and slapped his face.
Cheng Che’s head turned from the force of the blow. He paused for a moment, wiped the rain off his face, and then turned to look at Zhou Qiao again. “How’s Zhou Zhou?” he asked once more.
Zhou Qiao turned away coldly, without saying a word. She walked to the door of the emergency room to call Zhou Moning. Cheng Yan approached. Half an hour ago, he had sent Zhou Zhou to the emergency room and then messaged Cheng Che to ask where he was, informing him that Zhou Zhou was in trouble and was now in the emergency room.
“Where did you go?” Cheng Yan questioned Cheng Che in a deep voice. “You left before me. Why weren’t you there when Zhou Zhou went into heat? What’s with the wound on your hand?”
“Don’t ask,” Cheng Che replied. His voice was soft and weak. His dark eyes were fixed on the door of the emergency room. “Just tell me, how’s Zhou Zhou?”
“He couldn’t wait for you. He damaged his glands and took two doses of potent suppressants. His pheromone imbalance caused shock. The doctors say his glands may need to be removed,” Cheng Yan explained with his brow furrowed. “Cheng Che, if you can’t give me an explanation, don’t just say Zhou Qiao will hate you, I won’t be able to forgive you either.”
Cheng Che closed his eyes wearily. Zhou Zhou’s current condition was like a knife plunged into his heart, causing every part of his body to ache.
“When Zhou Zhou wakes up, I’ll explain to him. If he’s no longer an omega because of this, I won’t continue being an alpha,” Cheng Che said softly. He cleared his throat and then slowly moved to the side. He was not sitting on one of the chairs. He instead leaned against the wall and sat on the floor.
Water droplets dripped from his hair, falling down slowly. He sat there, leaning against the wall in the corridor with his head lowered as he silently watched the ground. He raised his hand, which was still bleeding, and wiped his eyes, leaving a few bloodstains on his face. The rainwater washed them away from the tips of his bangs, diluting them, and they streamed down his chin.

*Translator’s Note: Double update since I missed last week. I know it’s heartbreaking but the wife-chasing-crematorium will begin soon so I’m up for it. And Cheng Che is not to blame, I know. But still… oh well, let’s see what happens from here onwards. -K
