In the evening, Zhou Moning and Jian Yan brought porridge to Zhou Zhou. Zhou Moning was on the phone dealing with company matters in the corridor, while Jian Yan helped Zhou Zhou blow on the porridge and handed the bowl to him.
“Where’s my sister?” Zhou Zhou asked.
“She’ll be here in a moment. She slept all day to make up for yesterday. She was so scared and cried like crazy,” Jian Yan pinched Zhou Zhou’s cheek and answered gently.
Thinking of his usually efficient and impatient sister crying so badly for him, Zhou Zhou didn’t find it funny at all. He felt sour in his heart and his nose felt sour too.
Family is truly precious. They shed tears for you, they feel pain for you, and they are the presence that will never abandon you.
As soon as Zhou Zhou blinked, tears fell into the porridge. Jian Yan was peeling an apple for him. Hearing him sniffle, he looked up and saw Zhou Zhou crying with his head down and his nose red.
“It’s alright. Cry if you want to,” Jian Yan put aside the porridge in Zhou Zhou’s hand and reached out to hug him. He gently comforted him while stroking his hair, “It’s okay. Dads are both here. We know you’re upset. Don’t hold it in.”
Zhou Zhou had wanted to hold back his tears. He shouldn’t care about crying now. Shed a few and it’ll pass. But when he was held by Jian Yan and told he could cry, he couldn’t resist anymore. He rested his chin on Jian Yan’s shoulder and cried sadly.
It’s really heartbreaking. It’s sad when Cheng Che isn’t by his side during his heat. And it’s sad to discover he’s been hurt so badly. It’s also sad to be separated from Cheng Che.
Zhou Qiao had just arrived at the hospital and was chatting with Zhou Moning in the corridor when they heard crying from the ward. Zhou Moning thought something was wrong and quickly opened the door to the ward, only to see Zhou Zhou holding Jian Yan, tears streaming down his face.
Zhou Moning and Zhou Qiao entered the ward and closed the door. Zhou Moning quietly looked at Zhou Zhou, while Zhou Qiao, thinking of the scene from last night and hearing Zhou Zhou’s crying, felt the pain in her heart that had just eased up begin to ache again. She turned her head, her eyes red, and wiped her own eyes with her hand.
Running her fingers through her hair in a messy manner, Zhou Qiao turned her tear-filled eyes and saw Zhou Moning looking at her gently, smiling softly and saying, “The last time you two cried together was seven years ago at the airport.”
At that time, Zhou Qiao hadn’t graduated from college yet while Zhou Zhou was still in elementary school. Due to family disputes, Zhou Moning had to take Jian Yan back to resolve the issues. Fearing it would affect Zhou Qiao and Zhou Zhou, he had to leave them in City A. When they parted at the airport, Zhou Qiao, with red eyes, stubbornly refused to say goodbye. Zhou Zhou, being young and unaware, just cried and held Jian Yan’s hand, pleading with his dads not to leave. He said he would be good and begged them not to leave him behind because he couldn’t bear to be without them.
Zhou Zhou’s crying was so heartbreaking that Zhou Qiao couldn’t help but cry in the end, resting her head on Zhou Moning’s shoulder. She choked out a few words that she would take care of her little brother.
In this world, there are many moments of helplessness and many dilemmas that are hard to measure. Separation is a plot that is destined to be replayed. But if there is a chance to reunite, then it is still worth it.

On the third day of Zhou Zhou’s hospitalisation, Wen Ran came. He had just finished school, wearing his school uniform and carrying his red backpack.
After Jian Yan helped them pour water, he left with Zhou Moning. Wen Ran stood by the bed, still looking pale. Since he was injected with estrus inducers and then strong suppressants before, he seemed to have lost colour and looked visibly weakened.
Zhou Zhou was somewhat surprised that Wen Ran had come. When he saw Wen Ran’s complexion, he frowned, “Are you sure you’re not sick?”
Wen Ran shook his head and looked at Zhou Zhou, saying, “I have something to tell you.”
Zhou Zhou had never asked Zhou Moning and the others about Cheng Che. He could guess some things on his own but was unwilling to think deeply. Right now, he just wanted to rest and recover.
But he was willing to listen to what Wen Ran had to say.
Wen Ran told Zhou Zhou everything; from the pheromones, to Cheng Che’s injury, and about what happened to Su Han at the police station. He also told him about the night he tried to call Zhou Zhou to tell him everything. But no one answered the phone.
Zhou Zhou remembered that after he woke up, he checked his phone and saw several missed calls from unknown numbers, which were received while he was unconscious.
Zhou Zhou’s mouth twitched slightly. He remembered Cheng Che’s heavily bandaged hands and how Cheng Che had told him it was just a minor scratch.
How much force and endurance would it take to bite one’s own hand until it reached the bone?
“It must have been very painful…” Zhou Zhou murmured to himself. He then looked up at Wen Ran and asked, “What about you? Did it hurt when they extracted your pheromones?”
Wen Ran remained silent about his own experience of being drugged and then given strong suppressants. He dug his fingertips into his palm, feeling the pain as he whispered, “I am to blame.”
“Why did you give Su Han your pheromones?” Zhou Zhou seemed to no longer care about anything else. He just wanted to know the reason behind Wen Ran’s actions. “Are you and him good friends?”
“No,” Wen Ran couldn’t face Zhou Zhou’s gaze. He looked at the lush green leaves outside the window and said, “He gave me some money for it.”
“Do you need money?” Zhou Zhou asked him.
“I came here alone,” Wen Ran said, as if telling a story that had nothing to do with him. But there was a deep-seated weariness in his tone. “You know, the tuition fees at the Omega Center are not cheap. Before, I used to work after school every day. But the college entrance exam is coming soon. And I can’t be distracted. Su Han found me and offered me money to buy my pheromones.”
Recalling the unbearable past, the dark and cramped room, the ruthless and rough debt collectors, the malicious gazes and touches in the bar, Wen Ran closed his eyes, unwilling to remember these things. His breathing was trembling. “Zhou Zhou, you can treat me like a rat in the gutter. I didn’t know it would turn out like this. I didn’t know Su Han would go to Cheng Che. I didn’t know you would go into heat on the same day. After I transferred the money back to Su Han and wanted to warn you about him, I found out that it was too late. In the early morning, Cheng Che contacted me. He said he was at the police station. That’s when I knew what had happened. So I went and gave a statement.”
“I don’t remember how much I wanted to become a normal person. Just the most ordinary person would do. But I couldn’t…” Wen Ran choked, “I can’t get up anymore. I’ve fallen into the mud. I admit defeat. But I really didn’t mean to drag you into this. Su Han told me he would use my extracted pheromones for his own surgery. I really didn’t know he would use it directly on Cheng Che.”
“I’m sorry, Zhou Zhou.”
The leaves outside the window swayed in the evening breeze. It seemed that even through the closed window, one could hear the faint rustling.
“Did you eat all the peanut candy I gave you last time?” Zhou Zhou listened quietly and then suddenly asked.
Wen Ran slowly shifted his gaze to Zhou Zhou and nodded.
“Do you still want it? I have a lot of them,” Zhou Zhou smiled. “After I’m discharged, do you want me to bring some to your class?”
Wen Ran looked at Zhou Zhou for a while before shaking his head. “No. It’s not good.”
“It’s not good to get too close to someone like me.”
After Wen Ran finished speaking, he wiped his eyes and took out a notebook from his backpack, placing it on the table next to the bed.
“I’ve organised all the sample questions from the unified exams this semester in this notebook. And I’ve also written down the knowledge points you might need. I don’t know if it’s suitable for you. But you can take a look. If you don’t need it, you can throw it away.” He lowered his head, packed up his backpack, and said, “Rest well. I’m leaving.”
Zhou Zhou didn’t have time to say anything before Wen Ran hurriedly left the ward with his head down.
Zhou Zhou reached out and took the notebook. It had a sweet, unknown pheromone scent on it. As he opened it, he saw neat and clear handwriting, with solution steps and reasoning easily understood. There were also concise and refined knowledge points on it. All the sample questions from every subject were in there. It was obviously prepared hastily, and Zhou Zhou realised that Wen Ran must have stayed up all night to finish it.
Thinking back to Wen Ran’s expression just now, Zhou Zhou felt his near-losing composure and vulnerability. Stripped of all pretence, the beautiful omega had called himself a rat in the gutter, someone who had fallen into the mud and couldn’t climb out. It was as if he was on the verge of revealing all his unspeakable secrets.
How many untold stories and dark corners are there in this world, Zhou Zhou wondered.
There are countless untold stories, endless tales. No one is better than anyone else—malice remains malice, and kindness does not mean never making mistakes. It’s about wanting a chance to repent even when deeply mired in the mud.
Zhou Zhou closed the thick notebook and looked out the window.

@ZZZZZhou: I hope you’ll get better more than I do. You’re not in the gutter. You’re fine.
