Yu Yang always feels that this summer is too long.

When early summer had not arrived, he caught a whiff of rose fragrance and anxiously held onto it for several months. Sure enough, when midsummer came, he lost it.

Before Jin Wuqi went abroad, he met with him. After spending time together, Yu Yang always felt something was off. The omega who always flirted with him seemed to have not said much during that meeting. Instead, he spent more time smiling at him, without a hint of frivolity, all of which was a kind of gentleness that Yu Yang could not understand.

Zhou Zhou brought him the red packet given by Jin Wuqi. After Zhou Zhou left, when Yu Yang pulled out the note from the red packet, he understood everything.

TO YU YANG: Hey, kid, I’m leaving. Grow up well and have a happy college life.

“Fuck.” He fiercely smashed the red packet against the wall and picked up his phone to call Jin Wuqi.

No answer. And no reply on WeChat either.

The omega who said he would wait for him to grow up had left so decisively.

“Liar.” Yu Yang, his eyes red, clutched his phone and looked at the bouquet of roses Jin Wuqi had bought when he came to his house not long ago. Through gritted teeth, he said, “You toyed with me for so long.”

The beautiful roses were stuffed into the trash can. The thing Yu Yang was most afraid of had happened.

From the beginning, Yu Yang was afraid that Jin Wuqi was just playing around for fun. But after all this time, even though Jin Wuqi still seemed frivolous and not serious, Yu Yang believed that there was some sincerity in him, especially since Jin Wuqi had promised to wait for him.

But what Yu Yang got in the end was being abandoned without explanation or farewell with only a red packet and a light-hearted note.

Is this a breakup fee? Or is this the salary for sleeping with me over these months?

It’s too ironic. Yu Yang stood in the room. A chill started to creep from his heart all the way down to his fingertips.

He wasn’t unaware of why Jin Wuqi left. He just wanted an attitude, one that treated him as an adult alpha, with equality, not as the first to be abandoned when something happened.

Why didn’t Jin Wuqi even give him a chance to say “I’ll wait for you”?

It turns out I really am insignificant. At the beginning, I could be easily hooked. And now, when it’s time to leave, I only deserve a bit of money and a note to dismiss me.

No wonder. No wonder I never caught Jin Wuqi in heat. He probably planned to escape early on. So he didn’t need me to ‘mark’ him during his heat.

Adults can be so ruthless. It’s really something to marvel at.

It’s really unfair. The omega involved in this relationship has always been so clear-headed and self-sufficient, while I walked into a trap that was destined to be a failure, foolishly like a fool that I am.

This summer is really too long. Basketball, college entrance exams, summer vacation, the rose that caught my eye at first sight, the tea-coloured eyes glistening under the moonlight, the colourful sapphire blue hair under the streetlamp, the lingering scent of roses in the warm evening breeze, the cicadas chirping in the lush trees, my first love that I embraced while I was in my school uniforms, the first love with heart full of tiny wounds.

One rose for each heartbeat. But also for an unavoidable bitter ending. Yu Yang thought he had stumbled into a sweet Eden. But in reality, he had stepped into a muddy ground and fallen into an abyss of no return.

Summer is truly an aesthetic intertwining of love and pain, encompassing all the romance, regrets, pleasures, loneliness, coolness, and heat that one can feel. It’s a profound memory of youth, with hidden, flowing shadows. The moist kiss on the waist, the love unspoken but deeply felt, the brief yet intense emotions, and the heavy and lengthy aftershocks.

Today, Zhou Zhou has a class in the evening, while Cheng Che is still in the laboratory. They agreed that after class, Zhou Zhou would wait for Cheng Che downstairs in the laboratory building.

During a long class, there is a short break of five minutes. Zhou Zhou had just thought of picking up his phone to harass Cheng Che with a WeChat message when he heard a commotion in the corridor. Then, a student sitting beside him looked at his phone and exclaimed, “Holy shit. The lab building exploded?”

Zhou Zhou’s mind went blank for a moment. Even though he couldn’t think, his body reacted instinctively and he ran outside.

He didn’t think about anything else, didn’t make any assumptions, but just the words ‘lab building’ and ‘explosion’ were enough to make his heart race. The noisy voices around him seemed muffled, as if separated by a layer of wall. The only clear sounds were his rapid breathing and heartbeat.

Zhou Zhou couldn’t see the way clearly. His eyes were blurred with tears, making it impossible to distinguish the ground beneath his feet. He numbly followed the crowd towards the lab building. His face showed little expression. But his insides were already in excruciating pain.

Cheng Che… Where is Cheng Che now…

He followed the crowd and ran out of the lab building. As he looked up, he saw thick smoke and flames. The fire brigade had not arrived yet and the scene was chaotic. Only security guards and teachers were running around with fire extinguishers. Other students were being kept outside the makeshift cordon.

Cheng Che is on the fourth floor.

Wiping away the tears from his face, Zhou Zhou looked up and saw that from the third floor upwards, everything was covered in thick smoke. He didn’t know which floor the incident had occurred on.

“Cheng Che…” Zhou Zhou could hardly stand. He grabbed a nearby student as he stuttered, “Which floor… Which floor is on fire…”

“I heard it was the fifth floor where an experiment exploded,” the student shouted into Zhou Zhou’s ear because of the noise around them. “But it seems to have triggered a chain reaction. So the floors above and below might be affected too.”

Cheng Che is on the fourth floor.

Zhou Zhou felt like all his strength had been drained from him. Even though he couldn’t stand steadily, he desperately tried to push through the crowd. He wanted to enter the lab building, to go to the fourth floor. He wanted to find Cheng Che, to make sure he was okay.

He pushed forward through the crowd, crying and wiping his tears. His heart felt like it was being squeezed in mid-air, devoid of any real sensation. The pain spread from his chest to his throat, leaving his brain blank and aching.

Suddenly, another explosion could be heard coming from the lab building, accompanied by the shattering of glasses. The crowd panicked and everyone stepped back. They were choking from smoke filling the air. However, Zhou Zhou, with no reaction, headed straight towards the dangerous building. Gritting his teeth, he pushed through the people in front of him, tears falling unconsciously.

“Zhou Zhou.”

Like a raindrop falling into a rolling wave, but in an instant, it silenced all the noise in Zhou Zhou’s mind, leaving only that call of his name. He looked up and saw Cheng Che pushing through the crowd, staring at him intently, step by step, walking towards him.

Cheng Che stood amidst the billowing smoke and the chaotic crowd. But at that moment, it seemed like everything was isolated from him, leaving Zhou Zhou a peaceful and tranquil corner.

His heart felt as if it had been firmly held in an instant. Zhou Zhou’s nose tingled, and he rushed forward, throwing himself into Cheng Che’s arms. He held him tightly, choked up for a while, and finally, his crying broke through his throat. It carried a sense of post-traumatic exhaustion and lingering panic. Cheng Che’s tense expression instantly softened.

Cheng Che hugged Zhou Zhou, lowered his head to wipe away his tears, and smiled, “Poor thing, why are you crying?”

“I was so scared…” Zhou Zhou choked up, lifting his tearful eyes. “I thought… you were inside…”

“As soon as we heard the explosion, the teacher immediately evacuated us. Everyone ran very fast,” Cheng Che said, stroking Zhou Zhou’s hair. “I was afraid you’d worry. So I sent you a WeChat message. Didn’t you see it?”

“No…” Zhou Zhou buried his face in Cheng Che’s chest. “I was just about to open my phone after class when I heard about the explosion in the lab building. I didn’t think about anything else. I just wanted to run over here…”

Cheng Che hugged him and walked him out. The fire truck had arrived. Its sirens blaring. Cheng Che gently covered Zhou Zhou’s ears until they were out of the crowd before letting go. He said, “What if you got hurt from rushing here in a hurry?”

“I don’t know… I just wanted to find you…” Zhou Zhou hugged Cheng Che, unwilling to let go, feeling wronged and scared. “I really couldn’t think of anything else at that moment…”

“Don’t be afraid. I’m fine.” Cheng Che hugged Zhou Zhou, blocking out all the noise and panic, patting Zhou Zhou’s back and saying softly, “Good boy, let’s go home.”

“Yeah. Let’s go home.”
