Zhou Zhou couldn’t see the way clearly. His eyes were blurred with tears, making it impossible to distinguish the ground beneath his feet. He numbly followed the crowd towards the lab building. His face showed little expression. But his insides were already in excruciating pain.

Cheng Che… Where is Cheng Che now…

He followed the crowd and ran out of the lab building. As he looked up, he saw thick smoke and flames. The fire brigade had not arrived yet and the scene was chaotic. Only security guards and teachers were running around with fire extinguishers. Other students were being kept outside the makeshift cordon.

Cheng Che is on the fourth floor.

Wiping away the tears from his face, Zhou Zhou looked up and saw that from the third floor upwards, everything was covered in thick smoke. He didn’t know which floor the incident had occurred on.

“Cheng Che…” Zhou Zhou could hardly stand. He grabbed a nearby student as he stuttered, “Which floor… Which floor is on fire…”

“I heard it was the fifth floor where an experiment exploded,” the student shouted into Zhou Zhou’s ear because of the noise around them. “But it seems to have triggered a chain reaction. So the floors above and below might be affected too.”

Cheng Che is on the fourth floor.

Zhou Zhou felt like all his strength had been drained from him. Even though he couldn’t stand steadily, he desperately tried to push through the crowd. He wanted to enter the lab building, to go to the fourth floor. He wanted to find Cheng Che, to make sure he was okay.

He pushed forward through the crowd, crying and wiping his tears. His heart felt like it was being squeezed in mid-air, devoid of any real sensation. The pain spread from his chest to his throat, leaving his brain blank and aching.

Suddenly, another explosion could be heard coming from the lab building, accompanied by the shattering of glasses. The crowd panicked and everyone stepped back. They were choking from smoke filling the air. However, Zhou Zhou, with no reaction, headed straight towards the dangerous building. Gritting his teeth, he pushed through the people in front of him, tears falling unconsciously.

“Zhou Zhou.”

Like a raindrop falling into a rolling wave, but in an instant, it silenced all the noise in Zhou Zhou’s mind, leaving only that call of his name. He looked up and saw Cheng Che pushing through the crowd, staring at him intently, step by step, walking towards him.

Cheng Che stood amidst the billowing smoke and the chaotic crowd. But at that moment, it seemed like everything was isolated from him, leaving Zhou Zhou a peaceful and tranquil corner.

His heart felt as if it had been firmly held in an instant. Zhou Zhou’s nose tingled, and he rushed forward, throwing himself into Cheng Che’s arms. He held him tightly, choked up for a while, and finally, his crying broke through his throat. It carried a sense of post-traumatic exhaustion and lingering panic. Cheng Che’s tense expression instantly softened.

Cheng Che hugged Zhou Zhou, lowered his head to wipe away his tears, and smiled, “Poor thing, why are you crying?”

“I was so scared…” Zhou Zhou choked up, lifting his tearful eyes. “I thought… you were inside…”

“As soon as we heard the explosion, the teacher immediately evacuated us. Everyone ran very fast,” Cheng Che said, stroking Zhou Zhou’s hair. “I was afraid you’d worry. So I sent you a WeChat message. Didn’t you see it?”
